PCB forms task team to study domestic structure

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formed a task force to advise the board on how to improve domestic cricket in Pakistan. The team will study and review the existing structure of domestic cricket, consider its weaknesses and strengths and will make recommendations within two months. The recommendations of the team, though, will not be binding on the PCB.The team is made up of familiar names in Pakistan administration: former Pakistan captains Javed Miandad, Intikhab Alam, Zaheer Abbas and Moin Khan, and former players Sarfraz Nawaz, Iqbal Qasim, Imtiaz Ahmed and Zakir Khan, who is director of domestic cricket in Pakistan. Alam, who has been both a coach and manager of the national side and is now both the director of international cricket for the PCB and director of academies, will be chairman of the task team. Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan captain, was also approached to be a part of the team but declined because of other commitments. Some of the members of the team have questioned why it has only been given a recommendatory role.Nawaz said the team members would use their experience to determine why Pakistan’s domestic cricket was not producing more world-class cricketers. “The board want our input and we are ready to use the best of our experience to give them that. It is their responsibility to either implement it or not,” Nawaz told ESPNcricinfo.”There is definitely some problem with our existing domestic structure that is hampering the quality of our players. We have to sit down and discuss it right from the start. All the members of the team have rich experience of playing the game. Most of the members have played ample first-class cricket in different eras and understand the structure. I think the quality is missing and that is why we are not producing world-class cricketers. So we have to sit and pen down the differences in the structure of domestic cricket over the years and look for flaws that need to be fixed to get back the quality we had on our circuit.”The structure of domestic cricket in Pakistan has seen several changes over the last six decades. The period from 2001 to now has been the most inconsistent, with changes made every two years. The present structure starts with the inter-district Under-19 tournament, then has the inter-district senior championship followed by the National Under-19 event. After that there is the Patron’s Trophy grade II and then the country’s premier first-class event the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. The format of QEA has remained intact from last season, with 22 first-class teams – both regional and departmental outfits – competing in a two-league structure. The one-day tournament is the next event, followed by the Pentangular Cup: a first-class tournament among provincial teams and sometimes featuring a combination of provincial teams and top teams from QEA – again an inconsistent format. The season ends with the Twenty20 Cup played among all the 13 regional teams.Nawaz said the returns the board were getting from domestic cricket were not equivalent to their spendings. “The PCB has invested a huge amount in domestic cricket but the output isn’t a quality one,” he said. “Most of our current players aren’t in the same class as Wasim [Akram], Javed [Miandad] or Waqar [Younis]; they end up playing a maximum of two years of international cricket. We want to produce players who can play international cricket for at least five to ten years on their own abilities.”We will be studying the structures of most of the successful playing nations and will come up with feasible and the best recommendations for domestic cricket. After that it is the PCB’s responsibility to take up our suggestions and implement them.”Iqbal Qasim, who is now head of sports for the National Bank of Pakistan, also said there were faults in Pakistan’s domestic cricket. “It’s a good sign that the board have at least realised there are flaws and the system requires evaluation,” Qasim told ESPNcricinfo. “Every member in the body has huge experience of domestic cricket and I hope the team can come up with the best recommendations that are helpful for Pakistan.”

'An absolute black day for the sport'

Warren Deutrom, the Cricket Ireland chief executive, has slammed the ICC’s decision to trim the next World Cup to just the 10 Full Members nations as “nothing short of outrageous”.

Andrew McGlashan04-Apr-2011Warren Deutrom, the Cricket Ireland chief executive, has slammed the ICC’s decision to trim the next World Cup to just the ten Full Members nations, describing it as “nothing short of outrageous”.The 2015 event in Australia and New Zealand will only include the ten Test-playing nations after the ICC decided against a qualification system for the tournament, which means no chance for the likes of Ireland or Netherlands to earn a place. For 2019 there is the prospect of Associates and Affiliates finding a way back in through qualification, but today’s decision has effectively frozen them out of the game’s showpiece event for eight years. The decision, while tough on all the Associate nations, is particularly hard on Ireland, who proved themselves to have been a cut above the rest of the second-tier teams during the 2011 event, with a memorable victory over England in Bangalore to add to their scalping of Pakistan on their World Cup debut in 2007. Though they still finished sixth in Group B, they were more consistently competitive than either Bangladesh or Zimbabwe, the two main beneficiaries of today’s ICC’s decision.”The conclusion can only be reached that the decisions made today were based purely on the protection of the existing membership entitlements for Full Members and the commercial imperative that a ten-team event delivers nine guaranteed matches for India and England,” Deutrom told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s nothing short of outrageous. All of the principles by which a decision should have been made in the first instance – which is what’s best for the sport and what’s acting in the best interests of all 105 members – have clearly been abandoned today.Irish reactions on twitter

Gary Wilson: What is going on? Excuse the French but that is a sh*t decision! Not a world cup now, just a trophy with 10 teams. Heads up their own a***s

Paul Stirling: @gwilson14 Didn’t think u cud get a worse decision than ure lbw gainst the windies… I stand corrected ha!

Trent Johnston: The ICC have certainly made my decision to retire after the 2012 T/20 World Cup very easy, thanks for the memories… #cricket #icc.

Boyd Rankin: Thanks ICC!! What does Irish cricket got to do?? Shambles!!

William Porterfield: Trying to compensate it with 16 teams in the T20, is that cuz they make more dollars by having a few more teams in this format by any chance!!#icc

Niall O’Brien: mate just got of the field and I’m gutted with this news! This could halt the progress of irish cricket beyond repair. So sad now

Barry Chambers (media manager): ICC – no morals – no sense of fair play or natural justice. They are a disgrace and unfit to govern

“And after such a terrific event, and the wonderful occasion of the final, where the sport was incredible and regarded in such glowing terms around the world, I’m afraid this is an absolute black day for the sport. It’s a genuinely awful decision that has been reached.”Scarcely three weeks have elapsed since Ireland were the toast of world cricket, with their successful run-chase against England, led by Kevin O’Brien’s record-breaking hundred, destined to remain as one of the abiding memories in World Cup history. Boyd Rankin, one of the players who featured in that game, posted his thoughts on Twitter. “Thanks ICC!! What does Irish cricket got to do?? Shambles!!”Ireland also fought hard against West Indies and Bangladesh, and Deutrom believed his team had done enough at least to force the ICC into some sort of dialogue. “It’s a betrayal of the principles of sport and the principles of meritocracy and a level playing field,” he said.”Surely the principle of sport is that if you are good enough you should have the chance to be involved. You have an Associate member who has been out-ranking a Full Member [Zimbabwe] for most of the last four years, who has got through to the Super Eights of the 2007 World Cup, and who has been genuinely been recognised as having performed even better at this one, yet on the back of those performances it has been seen fit to reduced the number of participants at the World Cup.”Although ICC have offered an expanded World Twenty20 in place of 2015 World Cup places, Deutrom has serious concerns about the impact on the sport below Test level. Part of Ireland’s success comes from the generous support of sponsors and sports funding, but without the major prize of a World Cup to aim for, the product could be less valuable.”It’s difficult to expect sponsors to remain on board and the government to continue to offer support when the question they could quite legitimately ask is ‘why should we support you when your own sport won’t?,” he said. “High Performance countries would regard themselves as proper cricket countries who play three forms of the game. The decision here, effectively, is saying the other 95 members out of 105 should go away and concentrate on 20-over cricket.”

England on the brink of series glory

ScorecardEngland were three wickets away from an emphatic 3-1 series victory after more superlative all-round cricket left Australia in tatters on 7 for 213, still 151 runs short of making the visitors bat again. James Anderson produced an outstanding display of reverse swing, and Chris Tremlett battered the batsmen with hostile pace, to follow up Matt Prior’s first Ashes hundred which led England to their highest total down under.England claimed the extra half an hour to try and complete victory after Tremlett removed Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson in consecutive balls amid a heady atmosphere as the travelling fans, who outnumbered the locals, savoured every moment. However, Steve Smith and Peter Siddle managed to see out the eight further overs to keep England waiting overnight to celebrate.Prior added 102 for the eighth wicket with Tim Bresnan (35) to extend the advantage to mammoth proportions before the innings finally ended for 644 shortly after lunch. Any hope of Australia levelling the Ashes had long since disappeared underneath the deluge of runs and it was down to the batsmen to see how deep they could dig. Shane Watson started brightly before a horrendous run out, then England’s skills with the old ball – Swann’s probing spin and Anderson’s masterful control of swing – meant the pressure was never released.Anderson dispatched Usman Khawaja and Michael Clarke in a high-class six-over spell, while Bresnan was also a significant threat with the older ball. Australia’s remote chance of salvaging pride disappeared when Mike Hussey carved Bresnan to point six overs before the close. Tremlett’s double blast momentarily brought the prospect of a swift finish when he bounced out Haddin and clattered Johnson’s off stump.Watson played his shots at the start of innings, collecting seven boundaries with a combination of thumping pulls and drives, but for the third time in the series he was involved in a horrid mix-up and this time he was the one to depart. Phil Hughes turned the ball into midwicket where two runs were there for the taking, but he ambled the first so when Watson turned and sprinted back for the second Hughes hadn’t moved. Watson soon ended up at the same end while Kevin Pietersen’s throw reached Prior.Hughes, rattled by the incident, didn’t last much longer when he edged a good ball from Bresnan that seamed away a touch. Bresnan was again superb in tying down the batsmen and alongside Swann dried up the scoring after the early flurry of boundaries.Khawaja produced another composed display until, the ball after pulling Anderson for four, he followed one that reversed away from him and edged to the wicketkeeper. By then Anderson was making the ball do exactly what he wanted and gave Clarke a thorough examination to match that of Simon Jones at Old Trafford during the 2005 Ashes. It took all of Clarke’s skill to survive as long as he did but eventually he pushed at one that moved away and even before Prior took the catch he was cursing himself. For a moment Anderson thought he had a third when Hussey drove at a full delivery, however the noise was bat clipping ground and Andrew Strauss correctly opted not to review.

Smart Stats

  • Matt Prior’s century is his fourth in Tests and his first against Australia. This is also the sixth century scored by an England wicket-keeper against Australia.

  • England made their fourth total over 500 in this series, which is only the fourth time a team has done so in a series.

  • In England’s first innings, three batsmen scored centuries. This was only the seventh occasion overall and the second time this series that three or more batsmen have scored hundreds in an innings for England against Australia.

  • England batsmen have scored nine centuries in the series so far, the most by a visiting team in Australia.

  • If Australia lose by an innings, it will be their third innings defeat in the series and their fourth since 2009. In contrast, they lost only three times by an innings between October 1988 and November 2010.

Swann also played his part in maintaining the pressure and was denied a wicket he deserved when Ian Bell dropped a low chance at short cover offered by Haddin. It’s a sign of how well England have operated as a unit that Swann, who was expected to be a major wicket-taker here, has just one to his name yet the team are so dominant. As has been the case for the majority of the series, England’s day couldn’t have gone much more to plan. Prior resumed on 54 and reached his hundred, the fourth of his career, with an expansive cover drive off Michael Beer and coming off 109 balls it was England’s fastest Ashes ton since Ian Botham at Headingley in 1981.He has always been one of the finest off-side drivers in the England team and despite defensive fields had few problems picking the gaps. He also showed a deftness of touch to milk the spinners, then when the third new ball was taken made the most of the extra pace. As the runs piled up, England passed 500 for the fourth time in series, another new record against Australia.Bresnan played the ideal support role and having taken 61 balls to reach double figures began to unleash some powerful strokes of his own. This situation was far from the most challenging he’ll face but he showed a good range of strokes and a solid defence before edging Johnson to second slip. Swann played with the freedom the situation afforded him and Prior eventually fell as he slashed at Ben Hilfenhaus, although the TV umpire checked for a no-ball and it was only fractionally in the bowler’s favour.Swann proceeded to take 17 off five balls against Johnson and his last four-over spell cost 48 runs. It’s a long time since Australia have been dominated so extensively in a five-match series on home soil and on Friday the final nails will be hammered in.

Newcastle looking to snap up three players

A big update has emerged on Newcastle United and their plans to bring three players to St. James’ Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

90min reporter Graeme Bailey has revealed the three deals that PIF are plotting to complete heading into the upcoming transfer window as they look to bolster their squad for 2022/23.

Bailey Tweeted: “Newcastle United are ready to press ahead with the transfer plans they set in motion in January, and will look to finalise deals for Hugo Ekitike, Matt Targett and Jesse Lingard.”

Eddie Howe will be on cloud nine

The Magpies head coach will be left on cloud nine by this update as all three players would be excellent signings for the club.

Firstly, Targett would be a sensible, excellent, permanent signing for the Toon. He is a reliable, proven, Premier League performer who has been solid for Newcastle since joining on loan in January.

In the top-flight this season, he has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.92 across 29 starts, which shows that he can deliver on a regular basis from left-back in the division.

Secondly, Lingard has the potential to be an exciting addition to the team. He has found game time hard to come by at Manchester United this season but caught the eye on loan at West Ham last term as he scored nine goals and provided four assists in 16 league outings.

This shows that he has the quality to be a difference-maker at the top end of the pitch. The only question mark would be over whether he can sustain that over the course of an entire campaign as he caught fire in a six-month spell at the London Stadium.

Finally, Ekitike would be a phenomenal signing for now and for the future. He has produced nine goals and two assists in 14 Ligue 1 starts for Stade Reims and this suggests that he would be able to have an immediate impact on the team if he can adjust to English football.

However, he also has the scope to develop and improve over time at the age of 19. He has the majority of his career left ahead of him and that means he is a player the club can nurture over the course of a number of years, making him a good signing and investment at the same time.

Therefore, Howe will be on cloud nine if PIF can get all three of these deals over the line as they would all be fantastic additions in their own right.

West Ham: Moyes halts Soucek talks

Tomas Soucek’s long-term future at West Ham is in doubt following contract talks being put on halt by David Moyes.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who claim that Soucek’s contract talks have been stalled by Moyes in what could potentially be a bold move with regards to the player’s long-term future at the Hammers.

New contract discussions had begun to motor ahead during the January transfer window, with Moyes and West Ham looking at rewarding the player for his excellent form during his spell so far at the club.

The report by 90min also states that there are two Premier League sides interested in the midfielder, although the clubs are not named.

West Ham would rue not extending Soucek’s contract

The Czech international has scored six times this season, a steady return for a defensive midfielder.

His performances alongside Declan Rice have transformed the Hammers’ fortunes over the previous 18 months and they would be hard-pressed to find another player with his quality for a respectable fee.

The midfielder has played 45 matches for the Premier League side this season as they have exceeded all expectations, closing in on a top-six place and also being through to the Europa League semi-finals.

Moyes may be aiming to persuade players of higher stature to the side following their European success, but this may be detrimental to their finances.

With the 27-year-old being valued at £40.5m and being in the peak years of his career, West Ham could make an exceptional profit on the measly £14.58m fee they paid Slavia Prague for his services two years ago.

However, considering just how important Soucek has proven to be for West Ham since his arrival at the club back in 2020, the argument that losing the services of the midfielder this summer would be a disaster for Moyes and his side is an easy one to make – leading us to believe that West Ham must do everything they can to tie the £47k-per-week man down to a new deal.

Indeed, waving goodbye to the player who Kevin Phillips dubbed a “great asset” at the end of the current campaign is sure to be an outcome that would leave the London Stadium faithful fuming.

– Sinto apoio.

Hoje, houve a primeira baixa.

Campanha ruim

Fiquei satisfeito. Esse é o Cueva que todos queremos. O erro faz parte, e a responsabilidade é do treinador.

Spurs facing Harry Kane injury doubt

Tottenham Hotspur could be rocked with a fresh injury blow as a worrying observation has emerged…

What’s the latest?

After putting in one of his best-ever displays in a Spurs shirt, Saturday’s match-winner Harry Kane was seen walking away from the match with some sort of niggling problem, as revealed by Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

“Harry Kane was walking gingerly to the coach after the Manchester City game I’m hearing,” he told GIVEMESPORT this week.

The Lilywhites return to action on Wednesday evening when they head to Turf Moor to face Burnley for a rearranged Premier League clash.

Big blow ahead of Burnley?

This would be something of a devastating blow to Tottenham and manager Antonio Conte, especially just a few days after the attacking masterclass at the Etihad Stadium

The Times described his performance as ‘one of the all-time great performances in Premier League history’, whilst former title-winning striker Alan Shearer claimed it was “A masterclass in how to play centre-forward. Two goals against the champions, 10/10.”

After a slow start to the season, the England international has looked revitalised under the Italian head coach as his two goals against the defending champions took his tally to 17 across all competitions this season, in which ten of those have been scored since Conte’s arrival, as per Transfermarkt.

Without him, there isn’t another senior centre-forward in Spurs’ ranks.

Heung-min Son could deputise but that would drag him out of his natural and best position, and then there is young starlet Dane Scarlett. Deadline day signing Dejan Kulusevski would be another name in the hat to lead the lineup in Lancashire, as is Steven Bergwijn.

Spurs fans will now have to wait in fear to hear more from Conte in his pre-game press conference today.

If Kane is genuinely carrying a problem, as Bridge insinuates, then everyone concerned will be hugely worried, if not gutted ahead of Wednesday night.

AND in other news, Conte could find his new Lukaku in “cracking” 20 y/o gem who can save Spurs millions…
