NUFC transfer update baffles McAvennie

Frank McAvennie refuses to believe that Newcastle don’t have the money to sign a ‘quality’ defender in the remaining week of the transfer window.

Instead, the former Celtic striker told Football Insider that owner Mike Ashley ‘just won’t hand [the funds] out’.

The lowdown

Newcastle have made just one signing so far this summer, bringing in Joe Willock – the player Steve Bruce described as his “number one target” off the back of a successful loan spell – for a fee in excess of £20m (via BBC Sport).

However, Transfermarkt figures show that they’ve yet to generate a penny through sales, with the likes of Yoshinori Muto and Christian Atsu departing on a free transfers.

On Monday, The Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards reported that further incomings seem ‘unlikely’ at St James’ Park, in part because ‘they have basically spent [their] budget on Willock’.

The latest

However, McAvennie is adamant that another £20m addition simply “has to be possible” for a club of Newcastle’s stature, and he likened the management of the club at present to a “circus”.

He told Football Insider: “You can’t tell me Newcastle don’t have the money to make a top signing. Look at Varane at Man United, he cost nothing for a player of his quality.

“Obviously Newcastle can’t get him but the money has to be there, Ashley just won’t hand it out. £20million or so for a quality defender, that has to be possible for Newcastle, it’s a huge club.

“It’s being run like a circus. They are talking about loans or free transfers, this is a Premier League club. I just don’t get it.”

The verdict

A large part of the reason Ashley might be shying away from further investment is that he wants to sell the club. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire put it best when he said: “If you were selling your house, would you do up the kitchen first?” (via The Athletic)

Clearly, the key is to keep that ‘house’ in the Premier League so that it retains its value for prospective buyers. Ultimately Newcastle should have enough to survive in the top flight, but you can understand why supporters might be yearning for more ambition after finishing either 12th or 13th in the last three seasons.

In other news, if Newcastle are to make another signing, could this be it?

Tomiyasu talks ongoing with Spurs agreement reached

According to Calciomercato.it, Lilywhites target Takehiro Tomiyasu ‘wants’ to join Tottenham and an agreement has already been reached with Bologna for a ‘maximum of €20 million (£16.9m)’ – but there’s one last hurdle.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Tomiyasu talks…

Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici has had his eye on Tomiyasu for quite some time now with talks dating back to the beginning of last month.

Tottenham originally had a £12.9m (€15m) bid, plus an extra £2.6m (€3m) in add-ons, rejected by Bologna according to Sky Sports, but The Athletic then brought an update stating that a move was being finalised.

Updates went quiet on Tomiyasu just before and during the Olympic games, with reliable reporter Alasdair Gold revealing that sources on the player’s side were ‘confident’ a deal would still be done after he returned.

The Latest: Tomiyasu back on the cards?

Calciomercato.it have provided a fresh update on the saga from Italy, and they believe a Spurs agreement is already in place with Bologna to the tune of £16.9m.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They add that Tomiyasu ‘wants Tottenham’ and intermediaries are currently working to overcome the ‘latest obstacle’ preventing his arrival at N17.

This last hurdle in the deal, with talks having been ‘non-stop’ as they put it, concerns the ‘terms of payment’ – but intermediaries are apparently at work behind the scenes to resolve this issue.

The Verdict: Get it done…

For what should be one of their more fairly straightforward transfers of the window, Tottenham have certainly taken their sweet time in securing a deal for the Japan international.

As such, we believe he should still be brought to north London as a versatile ace who can solve two problems at once for new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

The 22-year-old can be slotted in at both right-back and centre-back and finished the 2020/2021 Serie A campaign as one of Bologna’s most consistent defenders.

According to WhoScored, he averaged the joint-most clearances per 90 (3.3) out of the entire squad and joint-second most tackles in that time (1.5).

Still young and with plenty of years ahead of him, a £16.9m fee is totally worth it for a versatile and promising talent.

Expert urges West Ham to win race for in-demand Sven Botman

West Ham United should go all out to win the race to sign Lille defender Sven Botman, according to Get French Football News’ Adam White.

Botman was thrown into the limelight after playing a key role as Lille beat Paris Saint-Germain to last season’s Ligue One title.

The central defender made 47 appearances last term and is on the wishlist of numerous clubs thanks to his impressive form.

West Ham – along with Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and Norwich City – are keen to sign Botman before the transfer window slams shut. Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Italian side Atalanta are also showing an interest.

Hammers boss David Moyes is eager to add strength in depth after guiding the east Londoners into the Europa League thanks to registering a club-record Premier League points tally last season.

West Ham have been turned down by Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma and French football expert White feels the Hammers should turn their attentions towards sealing Botman’s arrival at the London Stadium.

He told The Transfer Tavern: “Botman has so much potential and he is very much suited to the Premier League.

“Given the price tags that a lot of Ligue One players fetch, he could become a real bargain. If he settles in well and progresses as he should, he could be worth double or triple what they sign him for in a year or two.”

Spurs have a concrete interest in Vlahovic

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in a move to bring Dusan Vlahovic to north London this summer is “concrete.”

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Carlo Laudisa, who revealed in a recent interview with Radio Bruno (via Viola News) that Tottenham’s interest in the Fiorentina centre-forward is very much genuine.

The journalist went on to claim that making an offer matching the €60m (£51m) asking price of the 21-year-old would not be a problem for Spurs should they go on to sanction the €120m (£103m) sale of Harry Kane this summer amid interest from Manchester City.

Finally, Laudisa claimed that the Serbia international has no intention of signing a new deal at the Artemio Franchi Stadium, with the striker still having two years left to run on his current contract with La Viola.

He said: “It’s understandable that Tottenham, with Kane in the sights of Manchester City, look around: Fiorentina have said no for now, but the €60m value can be dangerous.

“I don’t like to venture into predictions, I limit myself to facts, and the facts say that Tottenham’s interest is concrete.

“If the English club were to collect more than €120m for Kane, they would have no problem offering €60m for Vlahovic. His contract? For months, I have received a very specific signal that cannot be ignored: for now, there is no intention of renewing.”

Vlahovic could be Kane’s heir

Considering the remarkable goalscoring form Vlahovic found for Fiorentina last season, it is an easy argument to make that the 21-year-old could well be Harry Kane’s heir apparent if the England captain takes leave of the club.

Indeed, over his 37 Serie A appearances for Vincenzo Italiano’s side last season, the £36m-rated man scored a whopping 21 goals, registered three assists and created three big chances for his teammates, along with taking 2.3 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game.

These returns saw the man who Forza Italian Football editor-in-chief Conor Clancy dubbed a “complete number nine” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.01, ranking him as Fiorentina’s joint second-best performer in Serie A.

While it is true these returns do not quite match up to Kane’s 23 goals and 14 assists in the Premier League last season, the fact that the Vlahovic is six years Kane’s junior would seem to indicate that the youngster still has plenty of scope for further improvement.

Despite his tender age – with Clancy going on to claim that the 21-year-old is “strong, can link play up [and] can hold the ball up,” as well as stating that he expects the Serbian to “score every time he plays” – these would all appear to be traits shared with the Tottenham talisman.

As such, should Kane indeed move onto pastures new this summer, it would seem as if Spurs could do a lot worse than signing Vlahovic as the 27-year-old’s replacement.

Phillips backs Sam Vokes for Sunderland

Kevin Phillips has offered his verdict on Sunderland’s reported pursuit of Sam Vokes…

What’s the talk?

The former Black Cats striker has backed the club to pursue a deal to sign the 31-year-old on loan from Stoke this summer. According to The Sunday Mirror’s Darren Witcoop, via Chronicle Live, Sunderland are interested in a potential temporary swoop for the Welsh forward ahead of next season.

Phillips has compared Vokes to Charlie Wyke as he believes the pair have a similar style of play. The one-time Sunderland centre-forward has said that the Potters attacker could be a great addition to Lee Johnson’s side.

He told Football Insider: “He came in not long after I left. Vokes is that type of player, you know what you’re going to get.

“He is in that Charlie Wyke ilk. He’s big and powerful in the box and gets on the end of crosses.

“That’s not a bad one to be fair. You would like to think he can perform in League One.

“He could suit Sunderland’s style of play, that could turn out to be a decent signing.”

Forget Wyke

Wyke’s contract at Sunderland expired earlier this week and there has been no update on whether or not he will be signing an extension at the Stadium of Light. Football Insider claimed last month that he was keen on a transfer to Scottish giants Celtic, with the Glasgow side chasing a swoop for the striker. This means that there may not be much hope for another season on Wearside for Wyke, which is why Sunderland must now forget him and move on.

Kristjaan Speakman must instead focus his attention on a move for Vokes. As Phillips explained, he could be the ideal replacement for Wyke and ease any fears that there will be a gigantic hole to fill in the number nine role next season.

The 31-year-old is vastly experienced at Premier League and Championship level, which suggests that he could thrive if he drops down to League One. Upon his arrival at Stoke in 2019, then-Potters manager Nathan Jones hailed him as a marquee level signing for the Championship, pointing out Vokes’ experience in the Premier League.

He told Stoke’s official website: “Sam is a player of real pedigree, he has been promoted from this level and he’s an experienced international and Premier League player.

“To get it done is something totally different to anything we have and we think he’s a marquee player for this level.”

Vokes has played 113 games in the top flight during his career, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists. He has also been involved in 75 goals in 276 appearances in the Championship for the likes of Burnley, Stoke, Wolves and Norwich. This suggests that he has the pedigree to arrive at the Stadium of Light and be a key player in League One, as he has proven his quality in the two divisions above.

The £33,000-per-week beast also boasts a career average of 5.5 aerial battles won per game, which is slightly higher than Wyke’s 4.8 from last season. This suggests that he could be the aerial threat Johnson needs at the top end of the pitch following the departure of last season’s top scorer for Sunderland, which is another reason why Speakman must land Vokes this summer.

Sky journalist shares Kounde news for Spurs

Writing on Twitter, Sky Sports journalist Matteo Moretto has relayed the latest involving Sevilla defender Jules Kounde after Tottenham Hotspur reached a ‘total agreement’.

The Lowdown: Big Kounde claim emerges…

Reliable reporter Gianluca Di Marzio first broke news that Tottenham had reached an agreement for Kounde, with Sevilla apparently accepting a £25.5 million offer plus Davinson Sanchez in part exchange.

This big news attracted praise from pundits in the media, with Paul Robinson describing it as a potential ‘stroke of genius’ by new managing director Fabio Paratici, all while praising Kounde as the ‘world class’ centre-half who Spurs could so desperately need (Football Insider).

However, it’s not all good news, with some claims also emerging that the player has rejected a move to north London.

The Latest: Moretto relays update…

Writing on Twitter, Moretto has now relayed some news for Tottenham whilst sharing a claim on the player’s stance.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-2/” title=”Tottenham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Backing more negative news, the Sky journalist’s update details Kounde has in fact said ‘no’ to Spurs.

“Tottenham and Sevilla reached a TOTAL agreement for Jules Koundé,” he relayed on social media.

“But the player said no, pending other offers.”

The Verdict: Big blow?

Missing out on Kounde this summer, as this report suggests, comes as a blow for Spurs – especially considering a possible Paratici masterstroke was in the works.

Offloading a fringe player in Sanchez and bringing in a really exciting defender, all the while paying just £25.5m, would have been a contender for one of the best transfer deals of the summer window.

Alas, it appears Tottenham look unlikely to complete this sensational swoop as it stands, with Paratici possibly having to turn to other targets like Milan Skriniar and Jannik Vestergaard.

Klopp ‘cancelled’ Kabak’s move to Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp himself ‘cancelled’ Ozan Kabak’s proposed permanent move to Liverpool this summer, according to a report which emerged on Tuesday.

The Lowdown: Kabak impresses for Liverpool

The Reds suffered horrendous back luck at centre-back last season, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all missing the majority of the campaign through injury.

It meant Kabak had to be signed on loan in February, with the Turkey international arriving from Schalke, tasked with alleviating Liverpool’s issues.

There was an option for the Reds to sign the 21-year-old permanently for £18million, but the decision was made not to continue his stay at Anfield.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The Latest: Klopp called off permanent move

According to Bild [via Sport Witness], Klopp was fully behind the decision not to retain Kabak’s services, despite Pep Lijnders hailing him as a ‘big talent’, with the report claiming simply: “Klopp cancelled it.”

With Ibrahima Konate arriving from RB Leipzig, it appears as though the Liverpool manager simply saw no room for the Turkey international.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/the-latest-liverpool-transfer-news-copy-2/” title=”The latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Tough call, but a correct one

While Kabak can feel hard done by, considering he played his part in the Reds eventually finishing third in the Premier League after a difficult campaign, Klopp’s decision makes sense.

Liverpool now have Van Dijk, Gomez, Matip and Konate to call upon, as well as possibly Nat Phillips, so Kabak signing as well as could have led to too many players fighting for two places.

Granted, both Gomez and Matip have their injury problems, but the hope is that there should be comfortably enough depth without Kabak moving forward. With six options, it would have been almost impossible to keep everyone happy, fitness permitting.

In other news, some Liverpool fans are positive about the Reds potentially signing one player this summer. Find out who it is here.
