Ganguly nominated to BCCI's technical committee

Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain, has been nominated to the BCCI’s technical committee, a release from N Srinivasan, the Indian board secretary, said.Ganguly recently bowed out of international cricket: he had announced his retirement before the start of the recent home series against Australia. The BCCI has not indicated the nature of Ganguly’s role, but he will be part of the committee along with former captains Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth.Ganguly said Srinivasan had called him regarding the appointment and he agreed to it after ensuring the only travelling involved was to attend meetings. “Of course, I’m looking forward to working with Sunny [Gavaskar],” Ganguly told the Kolkata-based . “At this moment, though, I’m not absolutely clear about what I’m expected to do. That should be known during the first meeting.”Gavaskar is the chairman of the committee, which generally makes recommendations to the BCCI on the playing conditions and the structure of the domestic game. At a recent meeting in August, the committee had allowed state associations to pick four “guest players” [ those from areas outside their jurisdiction] in their squad, including one from overseas, from the 2008-09 season onwards. Earlier only three such players were allowed.Ganguly is likely to continue playing for his IPL franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, with whom he has a three-year contract. He is also slated to play Bengal’s final league game in the Ranji Trophy Plate League, against Vidarbha in Nagpur – the same city where he played his final Test against Australia. The BCCI had appointed a nine-member committee at the recent annual general meeting. Following are the other members of the panel:
Sunil Gavaskar (chairman), Chetan Chauhan, MV Sridhar, Biman Bhattacharjee, Milind Rege, Gyanendra Pandey, K Srikkanth, VK Ramaswamy, N Srinivasan (convenor).

Man United set to sell James to Leeds

An update has emerged on Manchester United winger Dan James, regarding Leeds’ interest in signing him before the deadline.

What’s the talk?

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Whites are in advanced talks over the signing of the United winger on a permanent deal.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are now discussing personal terms with the forward ahead of officially completing the move before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Delight

United fans will surely be delighted with this news as it means that the club are set to receive a transfer fee for James that could go a long way to paying for Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to the club. The Red Devils have agreed a €23m (£19.7m) deal to sign the Portuguese international.

Dan James joined United for a reported fee of £15m from Swansea and is currently rated at £16.2m by Transfermarkt. Romano does not mention how much Leeds are set to pay for the forward, but if it is within the region of £15-16m then that could pay for the bulk of Ronaldo’s transfer fee – which could delight United fans as it is exceptional business on paper.

You only have to look at their respective league stats to see the difference in quality between the pair. James managed three goals and one assist in 15 Premier League matches, averaging a WhoScored rating of 6.61 for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, scored 29 goals and provided three assists in 33 Serie A appearances for Juventus, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.61. Despite being 36, the ex-Real Madrid attacker still enjoyed a sensational season with the Italian side, scoring goals at a superb rate, whereas James struggled to find consistency for United.

The club are now on the verge of potentially selling James for almost as much, or more depending on the final figures that are yet to be reported, as they have agreed to pay for Ronaldo. Of course, this does not take wages into account, but it is still great reading for United fans all the same and represents a shrewd piece of business by the club on and off the pitch.

In a year where their owners have been protested against in such stern fashion, they should be pleased that they’re finally beginning to get things right.

Now, they can now look forward to Ronaldo potentially making his second debut for the club knowing that James’ prospective sale may well help pay for the signing.

Pundit says Japhet Tanganga is Tottenham’s best right-back

Graham Roberts believes that Japhet Tanganga is currently the best right-back at Tottenham.

The 22-year-old has spent most of his career playing in many different positions across the back-four but appears to have established himself as the club’s first-choice right-back this season.

Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier are still in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad, but Tanganga has moved ahead of the pair in the pecking order – and was given the nod for the season-opener against Manchester City on Sunday.

And Tanganga repaid the faith Santo showed in him by containing both Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling impressive, which saw him named as man of the match against the Premier League champions.

Tanganga, who was strongly linked with a shock loan move to Galatasaray, has struggled with injuries since breaking into the first-team 18 months ago, but having enjoyed a productive pre-season and an excellent performance against City, looks to have put his problems behind him.

And Roberts exclusively told Football FanCast that the Academy graduate is better than both Doherty and Aurier:

“He’s the best right-back we’ve got at the moment, so you’ve got to stick with him.”

du Preez ton in vain as Yorkshire win thriller

A round-up of the Pro 40 action on July 20, 2008

Cricinfo staff03-Aug-2008The game of the day was at Headingley where Yorkshire held their nerve for a thrilling one-run win over Leicestershire. A century for Jacques Rudolph boosted the home side to an impressive 303 for 4, only for Dillon du Preez to respond with a ton of his own, this one unbeaten, but in an ultimately losing cause as they ended up on 302 for 7. du Preez needed to hit a six off the final ball, but could only manage a four. Rudolph’s 120 came from 97 balls, while du Preez’s 107 came from a mere 65 as he set about lifting his side from true danger at 198 for 6. He nearly pulled off the heist thanks to a seventh-wicket stand of 94 with Claude Henderson, who made 30, but Darren Gough bowled Henderson and then the visitors couldn’t quite scrape home.Mark Ramprakash capped a good weekend with a fifty as Surrey beat Derbyshireby 13 runs at Chesterfield. Scott Newman also made a half-century before he fell to former Surrey team-mate Nayan Doshi. Another ex-Surrey man, Rikki Clarke, posed a few problems for his old club, putting on 95 with Chris Rogers, but they both fell in quick succession and Derbyshire were from then on playing catch-up. Jade Dernbach ended with 5 for 31 and Usman Afzaal also played his part with 4 for 49.Azhar Mahmood proved Kent’s star turn in their 59-run Duckworth-Lewis win against Glamorgan at Canterbury. He top-scored with 68 to lift them to 202 for 9 and then he took 3 for 14 from six overs to prevent Glamorgan getting a hold in their innings. Chasing 191 from 30.2 overs, they pulled up well short on 131 for 9, Ben Wright the sole batting light with a fifty.Essex easily sank Northamptonshire at Garon Park after bowling them out for 61 and then cantering to their 61-run target from 37 overs, requiring only 14.5 overs to do so. The pitch had aided bowlers in the Championship match last week and continued to do so with the white ball. There were three wickets each for Graham Napier, David Masters and Chris Wright, while the opener Jason Gallian remained unbeaten on 20 as a simple chase was completed with ease.

Nottinghamshire’s 208 for 8 proved enough to pull off a nine-run win by the D-L method when Gloucestershire responded with 92 for 4 from a revised 19 overs at Cheltenham. The visitors’ innings was built around Samit Patel’s 65, while Chris Read gave them a late boost with 33 after they had slipped to 166 for 6. Mark Ealham’s 3 for 10 from four overs then put the skids on Gloucestershire and earned the win, keeping Nottinghamshire top of the table.Lancashire reached 210 for 8 from a rain-affected 39 overs and Hampshire had reached 14 without loss from five overs when the match was washed out at Southampton. Francois du Plessis and Steven Croft both brought up their fifties, sharing a rescuing stand of 118 for the fifth wicket, while Billy Taylor took four wickets. There was no result either between Sussex and Worcestershire at Horsham. Worcestershire reached 244 for 9 from their full complement of overs and Sussex had replied with 52 for 2 from 9.3 overs when the rains came. The in-form Vikram Solanki’s half-century, then, came to nought, as did Daryl Mitchell’s while Luke Wright claimed four wickets the day before England’s one-day squad is named.

Liverpool join Leeds in Danjuma race

An update has emerged on Leeds target Arnaut Danjuma, regarding Leeds’ interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Marca, via the Daily Star, Liverpool have joined Leeds in the race to sign Bournemouth forward Arnaut Danjuma this summer.

Leeds and West Ham were both touted with interest in the Dutchman earlier this window and could now be competing against the Reds for his signature.

Raphinha 2.0

Victor Orta must react to this news by swooping in to secure a deal for Danjuma as quickly as possible. With more clubs joining the race for his services, it could make it more difficult for Leeds to snap him up.

If the Whites can bring him in then it could be a terrific signing for the club. Marcelo Bielsa would love to coach him next season as he has shown incredible promise with his form in the Championship for Bournemouth. He provided 17 goals and seven assists in 31 starts for the Cherries, averaging an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.21 in the second tier.

Bielsa would be delighted to add another talented attacker to his squad as it would give him more options in the final third.

Last year, Clinton Morrison hailed him as an exceptional talent whilst speaking about him on Quest, via Football League World:

“Danjuma is an excellent player. Whatever happens, he will be playing Premier League football next year, whether it’s with Bournemouth or without them. He’s an exceptional talent.”

Bielsa already has Raphinha on the right-hand side of his attack, but he could have ‘Raphinha 2.0’ on the left by bringing Danjuma in. Whilst the Brazilian is a left-footed attacker who plays out on the right and likes to cut in, Danjuma is a right-footed player who starts on the left and can drift inside or go down to the byline.

Raphinha averaged 1.9 dribbles, 2.1 key passes and 2.2 shots per game last term, compared to the Bournemouth man’s 1.8 dribbles, 1.5 key passes and 2.1 shots per game. This, along with their positional awareness, suggests that they both have a similar style of play and, therefore, Danjuma could be Leeds’ next wing wizard if they are able to secure a deal for him ahead of the likes of Liverpool.

Bielsa would love having two dribble kings on the wings as it could strike fear into opposition defenders. Both Raphinha and Danjuma are capable of taking players on and either creating a chance for a teammate or a shooting opportunity for themselves, which could also excite the fans watching on from the stands.

Leeds need to push ahead and get a deal done.

AND in other news, Orta must complete Leeds United deal for “magical” £30m wizard, Bielsa would adore him…

Pundit says Spurs target Cristian Romero is among world’s best

Tottenham Hotspur target Cristian Romero has been labelled as “one of the most exciting centre-backs in the world” by Forza Italian Football editor Conor Clancy.

Spurs head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who was appointed last month, is looking to bolster his defensive options after seeing the club finish seventh in the Premier League last season.

Centre-half Toby Alderweireld has ended his six-year stay in north London by joining Qatar’s Al-Duhail earlier this week.

Romero, who is currently with Italian side Atalanta, has been touted as a potential replacement for the Belgium international.

Having won the Copa America with Argentina earlier this month, Romero has been sprung into the limelight and, according to Sportitalia, Spurs are now facing competition. The report suggests Spanish giants Barcelona are also keeping tabs on the central defender’s availability.

The 23-year-old made 42 appearances last season and, despite being at the heart of Atalanta’s defence, registered three goals and five assists.

Serie A expert Clancy believes Spurs would have secured one of the world’s leading defenders if they manage to get a deal over the line.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “Romero was brilliant last season. If Spurs can get him and have the patience to let him make a couple of mistakes early on, they’ve got one of the most exciting centre-backs in the world.

“I don’t think I could rate him any more highly than I do, to be honest. He is brilliant.”

QPR interested in Kai Garande

Queens Park Rangers are interested in a deal to bring Kai Garande to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that Mark Warburton’s team are lining up a deal for the Charlton Athletic left-back, with the Rs believed to be keen on strengthening their U23 side ahead of next season.

The report continues by stating that the 18-year-old is set to train with the Rs this week, with developments regarding the youngster’s contract at The Valley meaning that he would be available on a free transfer this summer.

Finally, it is claimed that QPR are not the only side interested in a move for the defender, with competition for the highly-rated player’s signing expected.

Warburton surely buzzing

While Garande is yet to make a professional appearance for Charlton, considering the significant amount of noise regarding the player’s potential, the fact that QPR appear to be leading the race for his signature this summer is sure to have left Warburton buzzing.

Indeed, Charlton’s U18s head coach Anthony Hayes appears to believe that the 18-year-old has a fantastic future in the game, as can be seen from his comments when discussing Garande in an interview with Benjy Nurick last year:

“Kai signed at U14, left-back, very good left foot, loves to get forward, and definitely is a threat when he joins in with the attacking side of things.

“He’s got a good left foot so he’s very capable of delivering, not only from dead balls but crosses, beating players 1v1. He’s got a trick to go past people and a good left foot and he does enjoy the attacking side of the game as many modern full-backs tend to do.

“He’s an intelligent boy, Kai. He’s a thinker. He does grasp that defensive side of it. The pride he’s now showing in his 1v1 defensive situations as well as improving his footwork is something he wants to ensure is a real strength of his.

“He’s a good kid. He’s a bit of a quiet assassin! You never really hear him, but he’s always involved in some light-hearted fun. He’s got a lovely personality, he’s very easy to speak to, and he’s a thoughtful kid. He thinks about the game.”

As such, it would indeed appear that, if QPR do indeed go on to win the race for the left-back this summer, Warburton could well have something of a star in the making on his hands.

And, although it may take a little while for fans of the club to see Garande in action for the first team, the fact that the Rs are not only searching for immediate improvements to their starting XI this summer, but also considering the long-term future of the side, is certainly something that should delight the QPR faithful.

Hampshire lose last FCC match but hold their heads high

Hampshire lost their final Frizzell County Championship match of the season, but not before giving the County Champions a ;ong wait in the field

Vic Isaacs14-Sep-2002Hampshire lost their final Frizzell County Championship match of the season, but not before giving the County Champions a long wait in the field. Surrey decided to declare overnight, after enough of the side had turned up before the start to field.Setting the home side the unlikely task of scoring 514 to win, they soon had Laney, Adams and Crawley back in the pavilion all to the seam of Martin Bicknell for 27, Crawley finishing his first-class season with a first-ball nought. When skipper Will Kendall fell to Bicknell’s 4th dismissal an early finish looked on the cards, but John Francis joined Neil Johnson in a stubborn partnership that took them to lunch without further mis-shap.John Francis fell soon after the interval to give Bicknell’s his fifth wicket and when Johnson was adjudged lbw to Salisbury for 86 (his highest first-class innings siunce the opening match of the season) it looked all up.Bicknell who had earlier left the field after one bowling spell in the morning, left again after his second, but this time was not to return for the remainder of the day.Nic Pothas who had suffered a moderate season with the bat, was joined by Dimitri Mascarenhas and the pair struck up an entertaining 98 run partnership, with Mascarenhas being particularly cruel on Ian Salisbury and Saqlain Mushtaq.Mascarenhas was finally out for 67, smiting 9 fours and three sixes, two of which were planter in Nursery Ground next door.Shaun Udal, probably Hampshire most consistent player in 2002 continued in this vain before playing on to Salisbury, and then Pothas passing his highest score for Hampshire was cruelly given out caught at slip for 99, when to all intents and purpose the ball came off the top of his arm. When the last wicket fell, Hampshire had lost, but they held their heads high as they posted their 6th highest fourth innings score in their 138 year history, and the match of 1,557 runs the second highest ever involving Hampshire, this on a wicket that a few weeks ago had been docked eight points by the ECB. Nigel Gray the head groundsman has to be congratulated on this superb turnaround.
