Anderson declines ICC vice-president request

Sir John Anderson does not want to be the next ICC vice-president in a decision that further complicates the search for a suitable candidate

Peter English24-Jul-2010Sir John Anderson does not want to be the next ICC vice-president in a decision that further complicates the search for a suitable candidate after John Howard was rejected last month. Anderson, a former chairman of New Zealand Cricket, was seen as the smoothest second choice following the ICC board’s order that Australia and New Zealand find another option.Howard, 70, remains the candidate but Alan Isaac, the current New Zealand Cricket chairman, and his Australian counterpart Jack Clarke will continue discussions before a decision is expected after Cricket Australia’s board meeting on August 13. Clarke, an Adelaide solicitor, remains the man most likely to step into the ICC job, but there is the possibility of trying again with Howard, the former Australia prime minister.Anderson was New Zealand’s original choice for the role before an independent panel decided Howard was the best candidate as the countries’ joint nomination. The ICC board did not even vote in Singapore on Howard’s appointment, which would have included a two-year term as president from 2012, after members from six countries signaled their opposition.New Zealand Cricket’s board learned of Anderson’s decision on Friday. “Unfortunately Sir John advised me that he is not available to be considered as a possible nominee,” Isaac said.”The NZC board respects Sir John’s position and acknowledges the outstanding contribution he has made to the game of cricket. We have recommenced discussions with Cricket Australia around a proposed way forward.” Anderson took on more company director positions after being overlooked originally and is the chairman of an agriculture business.A decision does not have to be made until the end of August and neither side is chasing an urgent resolution to the drawn-out affair. The Australian board remains angry about the treatment of Howard, who was vetoed due to a mixture of his political links and lack of experience in cricket administration. The board members were briefed by Clarke at a special meeting on July 9, but decided to wait until next month to discuss potential candidates. James Sutherland, Cricket Australia’s chief executive, said the Howard decision was still “terribly disappointing”.”The process [of re-nominating a candidate] is something that needs to be done jointly between Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket,” he said. “In time we will have a chance to get together and talk about the next step. At the moment John Howard remains our nomination.”

QPR face dilemma with potential Taarabt arrival

According to The Sun, QPR are lining up a shock move for former player Adel Taarabt, who is currently at Portuguese outfit Benfica.

The 29-year-old spent six seasons at Loftus Road, some of which were extremely successful for The Hoops, before securing a permanent move to the Portuguese capital in 2015. However, he is severely out of favour there, and has been forced to train with the reserves recently.

He has been allowed to leave his club in January, and QPR manager Steve McClaren has shown an interest in the Morocco international. However, under the Financial Fair Play Regulations embargo that The Hoops are currently under, they cannot sign any player this month unless they are free, and on a one-in one-out basis. Additionally, they cannot add to their wage bill.

Now the club would clearly be able to get Taarabt on a free transfer, as he is deemed surplus to requirements at Benfica, however, they will need to unload of another squad member in order to force through this move. That is where the problem lies; identifying who the club can lose in order to facilitate a move for Taarabt.

There is no denying that the former Tottenham player would be able to help QPR’s promotion bid this season, as he has done it before. Granted, he may have some fitness issues, but he has already proven what a success he can be in the Championship. The problem that QPR face is working out who should be sold in order to force this move through.

Other than De Bruyne, Aguero will win Man City more games than anyone else – agreed?

Since he returned to England, Kevin De Bruyne has been Man City’s main man. The Citizens can cope without him, as they’ve proven this season, but in order for them to truly compete at the highest level, de Bruyne is a big part of Pep Guardiola’s plans.

The way he’s able to create magic with the ball at his feet, namely through his passing and dribbling, makes him one of Europe’s brightest talents, and Man City are undoubtedly lucky to have him.

However, his range of passing is irrelevant, to a point, if Man City didn’t have someone to put the ball in the back of the net thereafter. Fortunately, they most certainly do in Sergio Aguero, and the Argentine will undoubtedly be their most important player beyond his Belgian partner.

Aguero has regularly been a 20 goals-plus per season man since he moved to Manchester, yet he, somehow, goes under the radar when discussing the Premier League’s best players.

Certainly, though, he should be in that discussion, because he’s proven time and time again that he’s one of Man City’s best players. Naturally, his goalscoring is his most useful trait and the one that wins Man City the most points, but beyond that, it’s his energy and hard work that has given him such a connection with the Etihad faithful.

He’s the perfect fit under Pep Guardiola, who though hesitant at the beginning of his regime, has allowed Aguero to flourish under his managership.

He’s already scored 5 goals in the league so far this season, and you’d expect many more to come his way over the next few weeks. He’ll continue to earn Man City points, and when De Bruyne is on the field, he’ll get even better.

Revealed: 75% of Newcastle fans want to sign Lamela

Newcastle fans have been discussing dumping their Andros Townsend pursuit to sign Tottenham’s Erik Lamela, and the vast majority of fans would prefer the Argentine.

Newcastle signed Kenedy this week, but the Magpies are still desperately short of attacking firepower.

Rafael Benitez has done fantastically well on a very limited budget since moving up north, but this summer Mike Ashley simply has to spend to keep his manager happy.

Crystal Palace’s Townsend has been heavily linked with a return to St. James’ as a replacement for Matt Ritchie, who could join Stoke as a replacement for the Liverpool-bound Xherdan Shaqiri.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255847″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Newcastle’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

According to Kicker (via Calcio Mercato) though, Spurs have made a huge bid for Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic. Mauricio Pochettino is chasing another wide player this summer, which could be the end of Lamela in North London.

The 26 year-old is a fan favourite due to his tireless work ethic and dazzling skills, but he has slid down the pecking order in the last 18 months.

Three quarters of Newcastle fans said they should sign the Spurs star, who is light years ahead of Townsend in terms of natural ability.

In Focus: Playing time key as Chelsea and Man City battle for Oxlade-Chamberlain

According to reports in the Sunday Express, Chelsea could face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool as they look to step up their attempts to sign Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Sunday Express says that the 23-year-old has told Gunners manager Arsene Wenger that he won’t be extending his current deal which is due to run out next summer, and the north London outfit must now decide whether then cash in on him now or risk losing him for nothing next year.

The Sunday Express says that the England international has been offered a new £100,000-a-week contract but he won’t sign it unless he is given guarantees that he will be first team regular in the upcoming season and beyond.

The report adds that Liverpool have been keeping close tabs on the situation but it now looks as though it will be a straight fight between the Premier League holders Chelsea and Manchester City for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s signature, with the former expected to launch a concrete offer in the next 48 hours.

How did Oxlade-Chamberlain do last season?

One of the midfielder’s frustrations since his move to the Emirates from Southampton in 2011 is the lack of progress he has made and the fact that he is still yet to find a preferred and regular spot in the Arsenal side.

The 23-year-old scored six goals and provided a further 11 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners last term but those outings came from a number of different positions, including on both wings, full-back, central midfield and on both wing-back roles.

It was in the latter that Oxlade-Chamberlain really impressed towards the end of last season as Wenger switched to a 3-4-2-1 formation, and the Three Lions star quickly made the spot his own.

Would he choose Chelsea over City?

It’s difficult to say but it could come down to guarantees over first team football and what position he would be or would prefer to be played in.

If Oxlade-Chamberlain is seen as a wing-back now then he would have every chance of overcoming Victor Moses in the Chelsea side, while he would have to beat off competition from Kyle Walker and Danilo at City, unless he was played in a more central role.

Who will win the battle between Coutinho and Moses?

Victor Moses has been a key cog in the Chelsea defence that has stifled opponents on the way to Chelsea winning 17 of their last 18 matches.

For Liverpool to have success against Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 formation, Philippe Coutinho will need to find his pre-injury form and spark a stagnating Liverpool attack in to life.

Liverpool have scored more goals than anyone else in the Premier League this season, but they’ve only managed to find the net six times in their last eight outings.

Moses who had been primarily known for his attacking prowess prior to this season and has shown that he possesses the physical and mental tools to have an impact on both sides of the pitch.

Coutinho just signed a new bumper contract, making him the highest paid player at the club, but has yet to score since returning from injury and Liverpool need the Brazilian to find his scoring touch against a formidable Chelsea backline.

In a match where every possession will be crucial, will Coutinho or Moses give their club enough of a boost to get the victory? Have your say via the poll below…

Three in, three out at Leicester City this January

Just a year after being bottom of the Premier League under Nigel Pearson, Leicester sit second in the top tier equal on points with table toppers Manchester City and have somehow landed a manger even more eccentric. Just less scary.

Claudio Ranieri has outfoxed the likes of Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal to take the club to a new level. Jamie Vardy will of course receive most of the plaudits thanks to his border line Hollywood movie inspiring form in recent times, but Riyad Mahrez and Danny Drinkwater are also performing exceptionally well.

Naturally, some of their best players have been linked with big money moves away after their meteoric rise in recent months. It seems unlikely the bigger names will leave barring an earth shattering bid, although some activity may be conducted in the winter market.

It’s hard to tell just where the fantastic Foxes will finish this season. With some astute signings, they are in a great position to land European football next season. Which level of continental competition remains to be seen, though as Vardy will tell you, anything is possible.

So here are three potential welcomes this January, as well as three potential goodbyes…

IN: TENDAYI DARIKWA

The versatile Clarets starlet has been hugely impressive since joining the club from Chesterfield earlier this summer as Sean Dyche’s side bid for an automatic return to the Premier League.

The 23-year old has performed exceptionally as either a right-back or further up the park in midfield during his short stint at Turf Moor so far, and is reportedly being lined up by a number of Premier League clubs.

Leicester are thought to been on the Nottingham born utility man as they look for a Dele Alli esque up and coming player from further down the league structure to make an immediate impact on the Premier League.

Could provide competition and cover for Danny Simpson in equal measure, and his pace is likely to fit right into the Foxes’ gut-busting tendency to counter attack.

IN: MATT MIAZGA

USA Under-23 international Matt Miazga has been mooted as a potential target for Ranieri this January. The towering defender has drawn comparisons to former Dutch great Jaap Stam during the early stages of his career, previously being linked with the likes of Chelsea and Stoke.

However, it could be Leicester who make the first move to bring the 6ft 4 bruiser over from the MLS. Though Wes Morgan and Robert Huth have proved stoic so far, bringing in a young defender as cover could be a wise option as the club look to mount a serious challenge on the top four, five, six.

‘The Tinker man’ isn’t blessed with an awful lot of cover in central defence, and the young American has established himself as somewhat formidable in heart of the Red Bulls’ defence in recent times.

IN: ANDROS TOWNSEND

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend is having a pretty tough time of it over at White Hart Lane this season, out of the squad and his Euro 2016 hopes fading. The Foxes, amongst others, have been linked with the 24-year old this winter.

Townsend would be an excellent addition to this Leicester side. The urgency he brings marauding up and down the flanks would certainly suit the style of play imposed by Ranieri at the King Power Stadium. The England international is a step up from the likes of Nathan Dyer and Marc Albrighton, who have performed wonderfully in this setup.

Perhaps a move away from North London can take the pressure off and help the former QPR loan star improve on his end product, making him a truly lethal winger.

OUT: GOKHAN INLER

Touted as a replacement for the sensational Esteban Cambiasso, the Foxes are playing so well, the Swiss star can’t even get a look in. Seemed a natural fit when he arrived from Napoli this summer, but the form of Danny Drinkwater and N’Golo Kante have prevented him from regularly claiming a starting berth.

Now, AC Milan have been linked with making a loan swoop for him. Yes, AC Milan are apparently now looking into borrowing players from Leicester, that’s the world we live in.

Though it would of course be tempting to keep a player of Inler’s talents as cover for your first choice pairing, having him just sit on the bench isn’t doing anyone much good.

OUT: ANDREJ KRAMARIC

The club record signing only arrived a year ago for £9m, but hasn’t been able to dislodge Jamie Vardy from the starting eleven whatsoever. With Leonardo Ulloa and summer signing Shinji Okazaki battling for a place to partner the England man, Kramaric appears to be the odd one out.

He’s another Leicester star to be linked with a loan switch to Serie A, with giants Juventus thought to be keen on making a New Year swoop. Valencia has also been touted as a possible destination for the Croatian international, who has only started three Capital One Cup games this season.

Another sign of the times that two traditionally big, and in Juve’s case last year’s Champions League finalists, European clubs are looking to loan a player from the King Power Stadium.

OUT: JAMIE VARDY

It’s almost hard to write this as nobody wants the fairy tale to end. A lot less likely to leave than the two previously mentioned, but reports suggest both Manchester United and Chelsea are lining up huge money bids for the 28-year old.

The Vardy story has been thrilling and inspiring, but should the club receive a firm offer £20m+ offer for a player approaching 30 and they only signed for £1m, it would be fascinating to see what happens. Whereas Riyad Mahrez is a longer term option, cashing in on Vardy while his stock is astronomical could prove too tempting for those behind the scenes at the club.

That is not to say they would delight in letting the former Fleetwood Town man leave, of course not, but from a business point of view, perhaps a deal can be done.

Again, it’s not really a nice thought, but stranger things have happened.

'It would overwhelm me' – Arsenal and Lionesses star Leah Williamson admits she becomes 'glazy' to deal with fan attention

Arsenal and England defender Leah Williamson has opened up on how she has to distance herself from fan attention to avoid feeling "overwhelmed".

Williamson spent lengthy spell out injuredMade return last month amid much fanfareDistances herself from acclaimWHAT HAPPENED?

The Gunners defender had been sidelined since April 2023 with a devastating ACL injury, missing the Lionesses' memorable World Cup run as a result. Williamson made her return to the action last month with a substitute appearance for Arsenal against Reading. Fans were naturally thrilled at the sight of their star player returning to the fray, but Williamson admits that that attention can get too much sometimes.

Speaking to before the Gunners' clash against Manchester United on Saturday, the defender explained: "I want people to know how much I appreciate the support, the appreciation of me as a footballer. But I find it… I have to be a bit glazy about it in terms of staying back from getting too involved in the noise, because otherwise it would overwhelm me. I never want people to take that as me not appreciating it [the support]."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Less than two weeks after her first substitute appearance for the Gunners, she made her first Arsenal start in 10 months in a clash against West Ham. Williamson was then recalled to Sarina Weigman's England squad earlier this week for the Lionesses' upcoming fixtures against Austria and Italy.

While her ACL recovery is practically complete, Williamson suffered a last-minute injury setback ahead of Saturday's clash against United, this time to her hamstring. The Gunners will therefore be without their captain as they chase all three points in order to keep their WSL title hopes alive.

Look away, Chelsea! Christian Pulisic dazzles in AC Milan debut as USMNT star scores stunning goal in dream start

Christian Pulisic is off to a dream start to life at Milan, making it clear that he's ready and able to put his Chelsea frustrations behind him.

Pulisic scores stunning goalHelps set up former Chelsea teammate GiroudSpectacular start to life in Milan

The young American scored a stunning goal in the Milan victory, which saw the Serie A giants take down Bologna 2-0 in Pulisic's debut.

Pulisic started on the right wing, joining Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao in attack, and contributed to two goals within the first 21 minutes. He helped set up one, which ended in a Giroud finish, before scoring one of his own in the 21st minute to ensure his first match with the club would be a memorable one.

The 24-year-old U.S. men's national team star joined Milan from Chelsea this summer after several frustrating seasons in London.

GettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Pulisic helped set up the opening goal, which came via Olivier Giroud in the 11th minute. The American winger played the ball to Tijjani Reijnders, who warned the assist for teeing up the Frenchman.

The American wasn't content with just the hockey assist, though, as Pulisic then scored a stunner of his own 10 minutes later. The goal came via a quick one-two with Giroud, who laid the ball off for Pulisic to strike from outside the box. Pulisic, in turn, produced a spectacular finish, finding the back of the net to mark his debut with a fantastic finish.

Pulisic lasted 73 minutes before replaced by fellow new signing Samuel Chukwueze with the game comfortably in hand.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic started on the right-hand side of the Milan attack, offering a look into Stefano Pioli's plans for him this season.

With Leao entrenched on the left, it was expected that Pulisic would start on the right or perhaps even centrally, replacing Brahim Diaz. If Pulisic were to start centrally, it would open up a spot for Chukwueze, who instead was left on the bench in this one.

Pulisic's performance in this one, though, will certainly convince Pioli that there's no need for change as he was dominant on the right-hand side. He routinely terrorized Bologna's defense, particularly in the first half, as he could have had an assist or two on the day given the chances he created.

(C)Getty imagesUSMNT IMPACT

All of those in U. S. Soccer's Chicago office will have watched on with a huge smile on their face. The USMNT hasn't seen this Pulisic on the club level for some time.

For the past several years, Pulisic has used his time to rebuild his confidence and, generally, he's done exactly that. No matter what was going on at Chelsea, the American routinely shined when called upon for international duty as he was always able to separate his club form from his international commitments.

However, the USMNT can now begin to wonder how much Pulisic could be when and if he arrives to camp in good form. That was the aim of this move to Milan, to build confidence. The best way to do so? Scoring goals, and Pulisic already has one in his back pocket.

GettyGOAL'S GRADE

Christian Pulisic (8/10):

About as good of a debut as you can get. Scored a fantastic goal and was key to how Milan played. Pulisic seemingly fits right in, which is great news after he spent so long on the outside looking in at Chelsea.

Yunus Musah (N/A):

Debut was delayed as he served a suspension dating back to his time at Valencia. That could be a blessing in disguise, though, as it gives him a bit more time to adjust to his new club after arriving late in the summer.
