Rangers eyeing 4-2-3-1 boss who's an "unbelievable" Ancelotti alternative

Glasgow Rangers’ wait for a win at Ibrox is finally over. On Sunday, after a goalless first half, the Gers ultimately demolished their battered opponents 4-0, thanks to goals from Václav Černý, Cyriel Dessers, Hamza Igamane and then, rather fortuitously, Jefté; Černý’s shot deflecting in via his back-side.

This was Rangers’ first home win since 2 February, ending a streak of seven matches, and a first victory at Ibrox for Barry Ferguson in interim charge.

The Light Blues, guaranteed to finish second in the Scottish Premiership, host Dundee United on Wednesday night, before concluding a very disappointing campaign with a trip to Easter Road on Saturday lunchtime.

With the on-field results mattering very little at this stage, the main question Rangers supporters are pondering is who will be their next manager?

Well, could that mystery be about to be solved?

The latest on Ancelotti to Rangers

According to a report by Madrid-based outlet AS, Rangers are interested in appointing Davide Ancelotti as their new manager.

It was confirmed on Monday that Carlo Ancelotti will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season to take over as the new Brazil manager, thereby becoming the Seleção’s first permanent foreign head coach since Ramón Platero exactly a century ago.

So, as noted by the aforementioned AS report, Carlo’s son Davide is now looking to pursue his own managerial career, having received ‘several offers’, including from Saudi Pro League clubs, but the ‘project’ that appeals to him most is Rangers, given the incoming 49ers takeover and the potential of Champions League football.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Davide, who is 35-years-old, has been his father’s assistant at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and now Real Madrid, and is known for being a master tactician and an excellent communicator, as outlined by Mina Rzouki of BBC Sport.

Also, as documented by Ben Banks of Glasgow World, during Ancelotti’s time at Goodison, he worked alongside fellow assistant-coach Duncan Ferguson, who is an ex-Rangers player of course, intimating the duo could link-up once again.

So, would a rookie coach be the best way to go, or should the 49ers appoint a more-experienced manager?

Who Rangers should appoint instead of Ancelotti

According to a report from TEAMtalk earlier this month, Rangers were said to be ‘hoping to appoint’ Danny Röhl as their new manager, with Southampton also interested.

Sheffield Wednesday manager DannyRohl

As documented by Football Insider, Röhl – who favours a 4-2-3-1 system – is likely to ‘walk away from Sheffield Wednesday’, having been required to juggle several off-field issues since arriving at Hillsborough in October 2023, leading to a’strained relationship with Dejphon Chansiri, who is the owner and chairman.

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Deutschland has previously claimed that Röhl is one of the candidates to become the new RB Leipzig manager, stating in an interview with Kicker that he’d “like to work at the highest possible level… in the near future”, so could this see him take over at Ibrox?

Let’s assess Röhl’s managerial credentials from his time in Yorkshire.

Sheffield Wednesday’s EFL Championship survival in the 2023/24 is known as a great escape, given that they looked dead and buried when Röhl was appointed, only to win eight of their last 14 fixtures, concluding the campaign unbeaten in six, thereby surviving on the final day.

The Owls then finished 12th this time round, a more than commendable achievement given all their off-field issues and low budget.

Röhl has therefore earned widespread praise, described as “unbelievable” by Owls forward Josh Windass, while Toby Gavelle of Breaking the Lines praised the ‘outstanding job’ he’s done at Hillsborough, adding there will be no shortage of suitors.

So, rather than going for the headline-grabbing gamble that appointing Ancelotti would be, the 49ers should be a lot more sensible and secure a manager who has already proved he is capable of getting a team to punch above their weight.

Pep must drop Foden to unleash Man City's "electric" star vs Crystal Palace

Can Manchester City move three points closer to securing Champions League qualification?

Last Sunday’s goalless Manchester derby, described by Richard Jolly of the Independent as ‘one of the worst games in Premier League history’, leaves the Sky Blues sixth in the table, a point below both Chelsea and Newcastle, the current occupants of the final two Champions League spots.

Pep Guardiola’s team have a pretty kind fixture list between now and the end of the season, but one of their toughest remaining games is Saturday’s early kick-off, with in-form Crystal Palace the visitors to the Etihad.

If Man City are to collect three precious points, Guardiola must leave out one of his favourite players and unleash the Citizens’ ‘electric’ attacker.

Why Phil Foden should be dropped

Phil Foden was substituted after just 57 minutes at Old Trafford last Sunday, having registered only 27 touches, completed a mere 61% of his 18 passes, missing one big chance and creating zero for others; all statistics courtesy of SofaScore.

This, though, is no outlier, as outlined in the table below.

As the table above demonstrates, Foden’s form has massively dipped, compared to last season, especially, when he was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year.

James Westwood of Goal believes the England international has ‘regressed’ this season, going from talismanic ‘dazzling performances’ to now where his performances range from ‘mediocre to downright poor’.

Speaking on the Guardian Football Weekly podcast, Nooruddean Choudry believes Guardiola has been ‘too loyal’ to out-of-form players who have served him well in the past, so should he bench Foden against Crystal Palace and unleash a fresher face?

Who should Man City start instead of Foden?

Jérémy Doku is certainly an enigmatic player, with Thom Harris of the Athletic describing him as ‘unique’ and a ‘star dribbler’, while adding that his ‘final pass can sometimes be poor’.

The statistics in the table below crystallize why.

The table certainly backs up the claim that Doku is an excellent dribbler, ranked first for progressive carries and carries into the opposition area, while only Mohammed Kudus of West Ham has attempted more take-ons.

However, the fact Doku ranks in the 26th percentile when it comes to take-on success percentage suggests he could still improve.

Meantime, the Belgian has scored just six goals across all competitions this season, two of which came against fourth-tier Salford, ranked significantly lower for goals, assists, expected assists, shooting, and chance creation.

Nevertheless, Guardiola himself named Doku, as well as Savinho, as key figures in the “new look” Manchester City, making it even more curious that both began the derby on the bench.

So, against a Crystal Palace team who will be without the suspended captain Marc Guéhi, as well as, potentially, fellow centre-backs Maxence Lacroix and Chadi Riad too due to injury, Doku’s ‘electric’ pace, as described by David O’Brien, should be unleashed as Man City seek victory on Saturday.

Greatest Tests: India's record home chase or South Africa's Adelaide blockathon?

A sprint to victory or a draw for the win. Pick between two opposite games as we begin to identify The Greatest Test of the 21st century

ESPNcricinfo staff04-May-2025Update: This poll has ended. The IND-ENG 2008 Chennai Test moves to the round of 16.India’s triumph of belief vs England – Chennai, 2008It was not a match India were supposed to win. For three days and two sessions at the Chepauk, England were on top. India were staring at a target close to 400, when nothing above 300 had ever been chased before in the country (and the highest target chased at the venue was 155).But then the English bowlers were met with a belligerent Virender Sehwag, who laid down the platform for India to push for the win on the fifth day. Gautam Gambhir put in the grind at the top. And then Yuvraj Singh, with his Test credentials under the scanner, joined Sachin Tendulkar at the crease to take India over the line on a pitch with awkward bounce.Tendulkar applied the icing on the cake, hitting the winning runs – which also brought up a fine fourth-innings century. Only six higher totals have been chased in Test history than the 387 by India in Chennai, only two of which have come in Asia, and none in India. It was a win, as ESPNcricinfo’s Editor-in-Chief Sambit Bal noted at the time, forged by unwavering belief to go for the jugular and not just settle for a draw.
South Africa’s blockathon vs Australia – Adelaide, 2012If this Test was part of a video game, you’d autoplay the final innings once South Africa were 45 for 4. There were 110 overs to go, Nathan Lyon – who had been the curator at the Adelaide Oval, had a two-for. Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle almost hypnotically kept hitting a good length.Faf du Plessis, on Test debut, joined AB de Villiers with a South Africa win out of the window. So, they abandoned the search for runs and committed to the blockathon for 408 balls despite nervy moments.Du Plessis was given out lbw twice but overturned the decision using DRS; he also survived a sharp caught-behind chance with Matthew Wade standing up to the stumps. De Villiers faced 220 balls but when he was bowled by a nip-backer from Siddle, 60 overs still remained in the day.The partnership between Jacques Kallis and du Plessis – 99 runs in 235 balls – wasn’t as stoic but took up nearly 40 overs. Lyon got turn and bounce to dismiss Kallis and Siddle got a couple of tailenders. High resilience and hyper-aggressive fields led to 71 maidens in 149 overs, but couldn’t stop du Plessis from getting a maiden ton and staying unbeaten as Morne Morkel played out Siddle. For nearly four days, only one result seemed possible. Australia had done everything right. They made 550 at a run rate of 5.12 in their first innings on the back of Michael Clarke’s 257-ball 230 and Michael Hussey’s 137-ball 103. They had taken a 162-run lead and set a 430-run target which should have ensured a win. There were no caveats or rain, just a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of defensive batting that denied Australia a series lead. South Africa went on to win the next game and became the first team in the 21st century to win back-to-back Test series in Australia.

The 'Dhoni emotion' sweeps Chennai ahead of Super Kings' homecoming

CSK will be playing a full season at home for the first time in four years, and the Chepauk faithful know their chances to soak in that feeling are running down

Alagappan Muthu and Deivarayan Muthu02-Apr-2023He is everywhere right now. He always is, especially in April and May. On billboards which seem to fit nicely with his larger-than-life persona. On the backs of the autos that zip through our streets. Well, on streets (see below) as well. At a plush hotel, near the Marina Beach, where the 12th anniversary of his iconic World Cup-winning six was being celebrated. On murals and stands at Chepauk, which he calls home. An entire city has become a tribute to MS Dhoni. It feels like Chennai knows something that we don’t. Or maybe we do and just don’t want to say it out loud.Chennai Super Kings’ intra-squad practice match that was thrown open to the public just an hour before the start last week provided a peek into the revelry that Chennai could finally experience this season. Only the C,D and E stands were originally available for the fans, but they got filled up quickly on a weekday and the new stand was also soon taken over by fans.

Dhoni’s first public appearance on the field since arriving in the city in early March brought the Super Kings fans to their feet. The locality around Chepauk is the home to Chennai’s most popular movie theatres, but on March 27, this was the show that Chennai wanted to see. First day, first show: blockbuster. There will be seven more shows at Chepauk, and the seventh on May 14, against Kolkata Knight Riders, could well be the last one in the city. So, Chennai wants to soak in every bit of its (leader). This will be the first full home season in Chennai in four years and only the second in eight years. You can take Chennai out of Super Kings, but you just can’t take the fans out of Super Kings. They’ve never let their team feel alone and at various neutral venues, even outside of India, the yellow army has outnumbered the other fans. When Super Kings were forced to move out of Chennai to Pune after playing one home game in the city in 2018, the yellow army and the team management arranged a chartered train called “” from Chennai to Pune for about 1000 local fans. All the expenses of the fans, including food, accommodation, local transportation, train and match tickets, were apparently borne by the Super Kings management.Related

It’s an emotion that sometimes can’t be explained. It’s an emotion!”I’ve personally travelled to Dubai and literally every city to watch a CSK game – just for Dhoni. In 2018, when there was no matches in Chennai, I was on the CSK train to Pune and travelled quite a bit. And we quickly started calling him and it’s a big thing. For him to get the title, it’s just that he’s our leader. Personally, to be honest, none of the clubs across sports give me as much joy as watching a CSK game.”And Dhoni has always reciprocated emotion and love towards Chennai and Super Kings fans. He has publicly expressed his desire to say goodbye here and not in Ranchi where he was born or Mumbai, where he became a world champion.CSK fans prepare to get on board the •TNCA/CSK”I never knew that I’ll be picked by CSK,” Dhoni had said at an event in Chennai in 2021. “I was in the auction and I got picked and it gave me an opportunity to understand the culture, which was very different from where I actually came from. I’m more like a wanderer. My parents came from UP; it was initially UP and then it became Uttarakhand. I was born in Ranchi, which was Bihar, and later on became Jharkhand. I got my job at the age of 18 with the Railways in Kharagpur, West Bengal, and then I came to Chennai. I believe Chennai taught me a lot – when it came to how to conduct myself and how to appreciate the game. Each and every time we came to Chepauk, the fans came and they supported good cricket.”The buzz around Chepauk ahead of CSK’s homecoming is unmistakable. ” (Brother, if you have a ticket, give me. I am sure the noise was equal though there were only 1000 people and there were 100,000 there [Ahmedabad]. The noise was equal. Just imagining the full house tomorrow, everyone is excited.”Even the usually poker-faced Michael Hussey is thrilled to be back at Chepauk, where he hit 63 off 45 balls to help set up CSK’s title win as a player in 2011.

“It’s great to be back here,” Hussey said at an event before Super Kings’ training session. “I love coming back to India and obviously Chennai. It’s been so long since we’ve been able to play a game at the Chepauk stadium. I know the players and the coaching staff are really excited about the match coming up. I’m sure the fans are going to be more excited. Really looking forward to a packed house making lots of noise and it will lift them up and hopefully we can put on a great show.”Even B Rocky, a TNPL mystery spinner who is currently with CSK as a net bowler, is just delighted to have spent his birthday recently with Dhoni in Chennai. He kept wheeling away against Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali at the nets on Sunday with a smile on his face. This isn’t just fandom. It’s brotherhood. Because it goes both ways. Somewhere around 2010, when he won us the IPL for the first time, and 2011 when he won us the World Cup for the second time, we conferred upon a man the status of a symbol. (PS – it wasn’t about the trophies, it was about the ). And he lived up to it. He cared about it. And every good thing he did on the field reinforced it. The power in his shots. The stamina he has at 41. The skill with which he controls a game. The euphoria he brings when he changes one. He might not have done it a lot lately, but that’s not the point.Because when Chennai falls in love with someone, it happens in an instant and lasts a lifetime. #ThalaForever

N Jagadeesan steps up at the top for Tamil Nadu

He has rattled off four successive fifties and is only four runs short of being the top scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy

Deivarayan Muthu28-Jan-2021Before the start of this Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, N Jagadeesan had opened only in five out of 22 T20 innings, and largely floated in the middle order. In the absence of a number of senior Tamil Nadu players, Jagadeesan has enjoyed an extended run at a top, rattling off four successive half-centuries. Only four runs separate Jagadeesan (322) from this season’s top-scorer Punjab’s Prabhsimran Singh (326).Jagadeesan’s reunion at the top with his childhood friend C Hari Nishanth – they had played junior cricket together in Coimbatore and have also opened together for Dindigul Dragons in the TNPL – has been central to Tamil Nadu’s unbeaten run in the tournament. The pair has struck up three fifty-plus opening partnerships, including an unbroken 128 against Assam.”Me and Hari have batted a lot together, right from Under-13 cricket,” Jagadeesan told ESPNcricinfo ahead of Tamil Nadu’s semi-final against Rajasthan on Friday. “The understanding between me and Hari is slightly higher than any other player because we’ve been playing together since childhood. It’s been a great run, we’re very hopeful and we wish to continue the same.”In the match against Bengal at the Eden Gardens, Jagadeesan had gotten off to a sketchy start, with Ishan Porel threatening both his edges under lights, but he managed to ride that spell out. He then pressed on to hasten Tamil Nadu’s victory by hitting Porel himself over the top in the company of his captain Dinesh Karthik.”He’s [Porel’s] a bowler with experience and also other bowlers were also pretty quick,” Jagadeesan recalled. “So, I think when they were bowling good lengths, it was important for us to give them some respect and we also knew there was something on the wicket – it was seaming a bit and swinging. So, as an opener, I just thought of going through that phase somehow without losing my wicket. Obviously, when the ball is not going to do much and once you get to know about the bowler more, it’s going to get much more easier for you towards the end, especially when you’re settled.”Jagadeesan isn’t quite a power-hitter, but he has thrived by lofting and chipping the ball over the infield against the pacers in the powerplay. He reckoned that the time he had spent with Chennai Super Kings batting coach Mike Hussey in the IPL has helped him grow as a batsman.”We’re not someone who’re totally dependent on power; we’re players who look more for timing and the gaps you get in the field,” Jagadeesan said, “Personally, it has been a great experience to have good conversations with Hussey and he’s helped me a lot. Moreover, you don’t get a lot of time to work on your technique during the [IPL] season. It’s more about the mental ability to handle the bowlers; the kind of ideas and clear thoughts you can get while playing. These are simple mental thoughts that he gives me and coming from a player from his stature, it has been good for me.”‘It has been a great experience to have good conversations with Hussey and he’s helped me a lot’ – N Jagadeesan•BCCIAfter warming the bench in IPL 2018 and then 2019, Jagadeesan was handed his IPL debut in the UAE last season. He was an uncertain starter, though.”I was looking forward to my debut because I’ve been warming the bench for a few years before that,” he said. “Just two weeks before we were going to Dubai, I was playing basketball and the post fell on my head and so I had to do a surgery on my forehead. I wasn’t completely fit [to start] to be honest, but thanks to the quality of physios, the recovery was much better. I was totally fit once the matches started and I was eager to make my debut.”He eventually made his IPL debut against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Dubai, with captain MS Dhoni handing him his maiden IPL cap and easing him into the CSK XI.”He [Dhoni] did tell me since it’s an IPL match, ‘I don’t think you should be nervous right now and I think you should recall your first-ever game – how you enjoyed and you just wanted to play and express yourself’. Yes, it did help a great deal for me.”Obviously, very special feeling because everybody idolises him [Dhoni], but not everybody gets to share the dressing room with him. So, extremely privileged and whenever I go and ask for any doubts, he’s always there to help and the door is always open. It’s not just about wicketkeeping, I also talk to him about batting as well. The way he’s off the field – jovial – it makes your life much easier.”In a chase of 170, Jagadeesan made 33 off 28 balls, with his reverse-swept four off Yuzvendra Chahal being the highlight of his IPL debut. Jagadeesan has unveiled a variety of sweeps to unsettle the spinners in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament as well.”Before your debut, you ask questions to yourself : ‘do you belong here or can I score runs here?’ After the first innings, my confidence grew and it’s about carrying through. Sweep is also something I’ve been playing for a long time. Even in TNPL and first-class cricket, I’ve score a lot of runs with the sweep. So, it is something which comes naturally to me, I guess, so I don’t give a lot of thought about it. I just pick the right ball to be swept.”

Jagadeesan also hailed Tamil Nadu’s camaraderie and Karthik’s leadership as they look to win the domestic T20 title, having narrowly fallen short at the final hurdle in 2019-20.”We’re missing out on a lot of names, but the same time we have a good bunch of [young] players, and the team atmosphere has been really, really great,” Jagadeesan said. “Everyone is very hungry and wants to do well. We’re all aspiring to become Indian cricketers one day and that’s something that drives us. And Dinesh Karthik is someone with tonnes of experience and he has managed the team really well.”

Ke'Bryan Hayes Wore a Couple Relics From His Pirates Days in His Reds Debut

Trades happen fast in professional sports.

Especially ahead of the MLB trade deadline. If looking for an example of this fact, look no further than the case of Cincinnati Reds third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes, who was dealt from the Pittsburgh Pirates to Cincinnati on Wednesday.

The deal—from acquisition to getting up to speed with the Reds—happened so quickly that Hayes didn't have time to get certain uniform items in Reds colors. So on Thursday, the day of his debut with the Reds, he simply wore Pirates-themed colors for his belt and cleats.

It was a pretty amusing sight, as well as a reminder of the business side of baseball.

Hayes thus far is hitless and made an error in his debut with Cincinnati.

Freddie Freeman Makes Huge Charitable Donation to Hospital That Treated His Son

The year 2024 was a difficult one for Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman and his family.

In the summer of the Dodgers' World Series-winning campaign, Freeman briefly stepped away from the team as his youngest son, Maximus, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. The rare autoimmune condition landed Maximus in the hospital, and Los Angeles rallied around Freddie as his son recovered.

Now, a year later, Freddie is giving back. The 2020 National League MVP is donating $1 million to the Children's Hospital of Orange County in California, he told ESPN's Jeff Passan Monday afternoon.

"Getting to know the doctors, nurses and care teams and seeing how they show up each day to bring healing and hope to kids and their families was inspiring," Freeman said. "CHOC saved Maximus's life."

Freeman, 35, is in his fourth year with the Dodgers. He currently leads the NL in batting average (.357) and OPS (1.063).

Afghanistan eye another ODI series win over Bangladesh

They were victors in 2023 and 2024 and things are looking good this year as well

Mohammad Isam10-Oct-2025

Afghanistan have had the wood over Bangladesh in recent ODIs•ACB

Big picture: Series win beckons AfghanistanAfghanistan are on the cusp of a third consecutive ODI series win against Bangladesh. They won the last two series in 2023 and 2024, as these two sides have become frequent bilateral opponents. Afghanistan’s five-wicket win on Wednesday was also a breath of fresh air after they lost their last five international matches.Azmatullah Omarzai was the all-round star in the game, taking three wickets and scoring an important 40 in the chase. His ODI stocks have been on the rise for the last few years. Rashid Khan also had a strong outing, picking up 3 for 38 and going past 200 ODI wickets.Afghanistan’s win this week also highlighted their other strengths. Rahmanullah Gurbaz played a mature knock under pressure, curbing his natural flair for the sake of the team’s stability. Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi continued as the background guys, keeping the batting line-up in shape in tricky chases. Left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote was another unsung hero, conceding just 31 runs in his full quota, taking Saif Hassan’s wicket. It is these percentage performers that keep the Afghanistan team going in ODIs.That isn’t the case for Bangladesh, who are having a hard time finding any consistent performers in this format. They are now lurching from one defeat to another in ODIs, having won just two games in the last 12 months. It was evident on Wednesday why they are no longer an ODI force. Bangladesh threw away a good start with soft dismissals and despite a recovery through a 101-run fourth-wicket stand, the rest of the batters succumbed to Rashid’s accuracy. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Jaker Ali and Nurul Hasan were all lbw to Rashid, which might have kept the head coach Phil Simmons busy in the lead-up to Saturday’s match.Bangladesh also need to figure out the Abu Dhabi conditions better. Afghanistan picking four spinners may have a lot to do with their confidence in the likes of Kharote and AM Ghazanfar, but Bangladesh missed out on playing Rishad Hossain. Bangladesh won the T20I leg of the tour 3-0. They’ll need some of that form seeping into the one-day leg if they are to keep the series alive.Form guideAfghanistan: WWLWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh: LLWLLNajmul Hossain Shanto needs to turn his form around•AFP/Getty Images

In the spotlight: Rahmat Shah and Najmul Hossain ShantoRahmat Shah goes undetected in the Afghanistan line-up of star allrounders and mystery spinners. But he leads the engine room – the middle-order – from where he has scripted many match-winning efforts. The latest was against Bangladesh, when he scored an invaluable half-century, in a 78-run third wicket stand with Gurbaz. It provided the foundation for Omarzai to thrive later on. Rahmat is the accumulator, and without him in the background, the Rashids, the Nabis and the Omarzais wouldn’t be able to grab the limelight. It has been a quiet few months for Najmul Hossain Shanto. Captain of Bangladesh in all three formats even last year, Shanto has taken a step back to work on his batting. Except that too hasn’t worked out well, after making just 37 runs in Bangladesh’s last ODI series against Sri Lanka. He came into this Afghanistan series with a single fifty in four matches for Rajshahi in the domestic T20 tournament. The format is different but Bangladesh need more from their No. 3 batter.Team news: Bangladesh need extra spinnerAfghanistan are likely to be unchanged for the second ODI.Afghanistan (probable): 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 2 Ibrahim Zadran, 3 Sediqullah Atal, 4 Rahmat Shah, 5 Hashmatullah Shahidi (capt), 6 Azmatullah Omarzai, 7 Mohammad Nabi, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 AM Ghazanfar, 10 Nangeyalia Kharote, 11 Bashir AhmadBangladesh could bring in Rishad to bolster their spin attack.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tanzid Hasan, 2 Saif Hassan, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Towhid Hridoy, 5 Mehidy Hasan Miraz (capt), 6 Jaker Ali, 7 Nurul Hasan (wk), 8 Tanzim Hasan Sakib, 9 Rishad Hossain, 10 Tanvir Islam, 11 Mustafizur RahmanPitch and conditions: Another slow pitch awaitsAbu Dhabi will continue to dish out slow pitches, so it is up to the batters to find ways to increase their scoring rates. Carlo Ancelotti explains why he ordered Estevao Willian to hand second Brazil penalty to Lucas Paqueta in Tunisia draw as West Ham star's miss proves costly

Carlo Ancelotti has explained why he ordered Estevao Willian to hand Brazil's second penalty to Lucas Paqueta in the draw against Tunisia, with the West Ham star's subsequent miss proving costly for the Selecao. The five-time world champions squandered a host of chances throughout the 90 minutes as they limped to a 1-1 draw against the African nation in their final international match of 2025.

Wasteful Brazil end 2025 with a draw

Brazil ended 2025 on a disappointing note as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a spirited Tunisia side, as Ancelotti oversaw his second draw as Selecao boss on Tuesday. The five-time world champions missed several chances throughout the game, including Rodrygo's early attempt, which was cleared off the line. Tunisia then took a shock lead in the 23rd minute as Hazem Mastouri broke the deadlock.

Casemiro and Vincius Junior then both came close to equalising before Estevao restored parity from a spot-kick in the 44th minute. Brazil were handed a second penalty in the 78th minute after Ferjani Sassi fouled Vitor Roque. Estevao, who had earlier converted a penalty, was instructed not to hand the kick over to West Ham star Lucas Paqueta, who then blazed over the crossbar.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Ancelotti explained why he ordered Estevao to stand down despite scoring the first-half penalty, telling reporters: "Paqueta was the penalty taker. For the second penalty, I changed because I wanted to take some of the pressure off Estevao, so I put Paquetá in, who usually takes them very well."

Analysing Brazil's overall performance, Ancelotti added: "Certainly, many, many (players). A few are missing, the list is quite complete. There are two friendlies left, but there are six months left, where anything can happen, the schedule is very demanding, the risk of injury is very high. The team, the atmosphere, are on the right track to reach the maximum level at the World Cup.

"I have a lot of confidence in this team, in these players, and especially in this environment, which is a good environment. The players are serious, professional, and patriotic. They have a lot of affection for the shirt, and these are very important aspects."

How are Brazil shaping up for 2026 World Cup?

Brazil will have two more friendlies in the March international break before they head to North America for the 2026 World Cup.

Ancelotti went on to reveal his message to the squad ahead of a lengthy international hiatus, saying: "I spoke with them (the players), wished them the best for the games they are going to play, we are observing them, staying in contact with them, talking, keeping the communication open until March and the World Cup. That's the idea we have, there's an observation process that will be very important."

GettyEstevao backed for Ballon d'Or

Estevao, who has enjoyed a fine start to his career at Chelsea, scored in both the friendly matches that the Selecao played in November and is likely to be a key member of Ancelotti's World Cup squad next summer.

Tunisia boss Samsi Trabelsi hailed the youngster as a 'football genius' before Tuesday's game and backed the 18-year-old to become one of the best players of his generation. "I think he's a new football genius emerging, very young," he said. "I think he's doing very well and he's a player who can be expected to be among the greats, among the best in the world, certainly, in the coming years. If he manages to have good performances or win titles, whether with his club or national team, he will be among the players who, in the coming years, could even compete for the Ballon d'Or. He brings many solutions, a lot of technique, a lot of genius. There aren't many players of that level, of that category of genius, on the world stage."

– Ainda faltam quatro jogos.
