Liverpool must ditch Fabinho for Bajcetic

Liverpool have been dreadful this season and now face an uphill battle to salvage any shred of positivity from their faltering campaign.

While Jurgen Klopp’s Reds did complete the initial £35m signing of World Cup star Cody Gakpo right at the start of the January transfer window, they failed to make any further signings or attempt to strengthen their midfield, which has notably been at the core of the struggles this term.

With the Merseyside giants now tenth in the Premier League having played half of their matches, ten points off fourth placed Manchester United albeit with a game in hand, Klopp will be desperate to pump some of his wayward team’s former potency back into the system.

The standards of many of Liverpool’s star players have discernibly plummeted in recent months, but perhaps none have had so drastic a drop-off as holding midfielder Fabinho, who has been an integral cog in the once formidable and fluid Anfield machine.

Signing from AS Monaco for £43.7m in 2018, the 29-year-old has made 199 appearances for the Reds, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists. He has so often been the sturdy anchor and the foundation from which his forward-thinking team-mates can flourish and suffocate opposition with the relentless intensity of their play, all neatly held together by the glue of his aura on the pitch.

With the 29-cap Brazilian’s arrival in English football coinciding with his team’s most prosperous period under the German, notably winning the Premier League and the Champions League among a multitude of other honours, the resounding impact of his work has been felt.

This year, however it has indeed crumbled to dust. The £180k-per-week midfielder’s 6.86 Sofascore rating in the league is his lowest across five campaigns for Liverpool, with journalist Chris Stonadge stating that the 29-year-old has “fallen, dramatically, off a proverbial cliff”, such is his overwhelming decline.

Liverpool’s saving grace comes in the form of 18-year-old sensation Stefan Bajcetic, who has emphatically announced himself on the big stage and stepped in to provide an energy and movement which had frequently been absent from the Reds’ midfield, with Klopp heralding him as “exceptional”.

Liverpool writer Leanne Prescott recently remarked on the teenager’s rise, saying: “Staggering that Liverpool look most in control this season when 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic is playing.”

The starlet, who has made 11 appearances across all competitions and already scored his first goal – which cemented an invaluable 3-1 away win at Aston Villa in December, is clearly blossoming into a force in Klopp’s team.

Outperforming his established positional peer with an average Sofascore rating of 6.92 this season, it might be time for the manager to finally ditch the beleaguered Fabinho and trust in Bajcetic instead.

While the young Spaniard has displayed his progressive prowess by completing 67% of his dribbles and losing possession only 4.3 times per match; Fabinho has succeeded with just 33% of his dribbles and conceded possession 7.1 times per game.

Bajcetic is a man with a “big future” at Anfield, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce, and he must continue to be entrusted with a starting berth as Klopp desperately seeks to stabilise the ship and forge a pathway back towards the top four for Liverpool.

Rangers predicted starting XI vs Celtic

Glasgow Rangers face their toughest test under Michael Beale this afternoon when the Light Blues welcome their fiercest rivals to Ibrox for the second Old Firm match of the campaign.

Beale has led the club to four straight victories since the resumption of the Premiership season following the World Cup hiatus, but Celtic will be a massive test, especially considering the blistering domestic form they are in this season, losing just once.

Three points are absolutely vital if the Ibrox side wishes to remain in a title challenge this term, anything less and Beale could say bye-bye to the league championship.

There were no new injury concerns following their last match, a routine 3-0 victory over Motherwell, and we at Football FanCast have predicted the Rangers starting XI ahead of today’s massive derby…

Allan McGregor will keep his place in goal after recording just his fourth clean sheet of the league season against Motherwell.

The back four will remain unchanged from the win last week, with James Tavernier, Ben Davies, Connor Goldson, and Borna Barisic taking their places in a back four that should become the usual defensive line-up for the rest of the campaign barring any injuries.

Beale will start with John Lundstram and Glen Kamara as his midfield axis, while 30-year-old Ryan Jack – dubbed “outstanding” by Jordan Campbell – will drop to the bench to accommodate the Finnish midfielder.

Fashion Sakala could return to a right-wing role having already scored twice and registered an assist under Beale in just four matches. Malik Tillman should operate in the number ten role just behind the striker and Ryan Kent will take his usual position on the left wing, aiming to add to his tally of two goals scored against Celtic.

Beale’s big dilemma ahead of the tie will be who to start as the lone striker; Alfredo Morelos, or Antonio Colak. However, considering the Croatian has yet to play under the Englishman, Morelos should be the one to lead the line.

The £33k-per-week Colombian “nightmare” – as dubbed by an unknown former Premiership player – has netted twice under Beale and looks rejuvenated. Thus, he will be aiming to make a difference having missed the first Old Firm tie of the campaign.

The Ibrox faithful will be hoping he is at his “lethal” best – as previously described by Jordan Campbell – during the match as the club’s hopes could rest firmly on his shoulders.

Chelsea finalising Benoit Badiashile move

Chelsea are reportedly finalising a move for AS Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile, according to a report from Football Insider on Wednesday.

The Lowdown: Fofana in

The Blues have made a head start on their January business by reaching a pre-agreement with Molde FK for young forward David Datro Fofana.

Teenage midfielder Andrey Santos also appears to be on the way with an agreement reached with Vasco da Gama, and it seems as if a third addition may be imminent with Badiashile.

The Latest: Badiashile next?

FI reporter Pete O’Rourke shared an update regarding Badiashile in the last 24 hours, revealing that the Blues are in advanced talks to sign the 21-year-old.

Chelsea are thought to be finalising a transfer for the Adidas-sponsored star and are confident of completing a move as soon as the transfer window opens.

The Verdict: Good news

Stamford Bridge officials aren’t hanging around when it comes to 2023 additions, and it seems as if it could be three signed relatively quickly in the New Year.

You’d say that Badiashile is the marquee name out of the three potential arrivals, with the defender having 135 games of senior experience under his belt for Monaco at the age of 21.

He’ll give Graham Potter another high-quality option at the back and could be the answer both in the short and long run, making it an exciting deal.

Aston Villa can land Luiz 2.0 with Sow

Aston Villa have experienced a lot of change at the club with the appointment of Unai Emery in October, and now the new manager will go into his first window at the club with a potential transfer target emerging.

What’s the latest?

According to Sport 1 (via Sport Witness), Aston Villa are interested in signing Switzerland and Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Djibril Sow in January.

As per the report, Villa will need to compete with West Ham United for the player and it will cost over €30m (£25.8m) to secure his signature ahead of the second half of the season.

It is also claimed that Frankfurt are not keen on selling the player but that could change if there is an offer large enough to tempt them to part ways with Sow when the transfer market reopens next month.

The next Douglas Luiz

The new Villa manager will have a challenge during the transfer window to identify the right players to join the side that can make an instant impact and make genuine improvements in the team.

Douglas Luiz was linked with a move away from Villa Park in the summer transfer window with both Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly interested on Deadline Day, however, the Brazilian midfielder ultimately signed a brand new contract in October tying him into a long-term deal to remain at the club.

Now, Emery could be set to offer the player a great partner in midfield with the signing of Sow who has many attributes and similarities to Luiz that combined could strengthen Villa’s midfield.

According to FBref, the 24-year-old is the most comparable positional peer to Sow over the last 12 months with the duo sharing many comparisons in their output over the season so far.

The midfielders came close in their shots on target rate (40% v 37.5%), shot-creating actions (28 v 26), aerial duels won (54.2% v 57.1%) and tackles against dribblers (50% v 56.3%).

Sow – who was dubbed “one to watch” by journalist Sam Smith – has been impressing at the World Cup in Qatar with Switzerland and helped the side progress to the round of 16.

Over four appearances, the talented ace registered one assist and tallied up a seriously impressive 98% pass completion rate in his own half, as well as winning 56% of his aerial and ground duels combined.

With that being said, the signing of Sow could be a great opportunity for Villa to add depth to their midfield as well as providing a high quality partner for Luiz that could bring out the best in both players.

Rangers: Ryan Kent contract update revealed

Incoming Glasgow Rangers boss Mick Beale will seemingly need to deal with the situation surrounding contract rebel Ryan Kent, amid an update on the Englishman’s future at Ibrox.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the appointment of the former Queen’s Park Rangers manager will seemingly have ‘no bearing’ on talks over a contract extension for the 26-year-old, with the fleet-footed ace having just a matter of months left on his existing deal.

The report suggests that the former Liverpool winger has been offered improved terms by the Old Firm outfit, although appears to be keeping his options open ahead of the January window.

This follows previous claims that the one-time England youth international has his eyes set on the Premier League after rejecting an offer from the Light Blues, having notably been linked with a move to Leeds United in the summer.

Ruthlessly ditch

The uncertainty surrounding the future of the Oldham-born ace will no doubt be a notable issue on Beale’s in-tray, with the 42-year-old potentially having to decide whether to try and tempt the player into staying with the Gers, or to simply move him on sooner rather than later.

Having previously worked with the 5 foot 8 ace during his time as Steven Gerrard’s assistant, the up-and-coming coach may well be inclined to try and revive Kent’s fortunes in the coming months in order get the electric talent back to his best.

However, the best course of action could well be to ruthlessly ditch the £18k-per-week man when the market re-opens, with the dynamic speedster having perhaps become something of a problem for the Light Blues in recent times due to his underwhelming form.

The one-time Bristol City loanee – who arrived in Scotland on an initial loan deal in 2018 – has still chipped in with a respectable tally of six assists in all competitions this season, although has proven somewhat unreliable in front of goal with just one strike to his name thus far.

The club’s miserable Champions League run saw the £15m-rated dud particularly underwhelm as he failed to provide a single goal or assist, with pundit Neil McCann notably calling out the attacker for having “disappeared” during the shambolic, 7-1 home defeat to the Reds back in October.

Pundit Frank McAvennie also suggested that while Kent is a “wonderful player” he has seemingly been the Scottish Premiership outfit’s “biggest failure” of late, having come under scrutiny for his work ethic and attitude.

As Beale looks to stamp his authority on the side and spark a revival of fortunes for Rangers, the new head coach will seemingly not want to have problematic and uncommitted figures lingering in his dressing room, with a fresh start perhaps the best solution for all parties.

Spurs: Bentancur was "immense" vs Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a second successive Premier League defeat after slipping up at home to Newcastle United on Sunday, bringing an end to a frustrating week which has dragged Antonio Conte’s right back into the scrap for the top four.

Having previously appeared somewhat settled as the best of the rest behind leaders Arsenal and champions Manchester City, the north Londoners are now only two points ahead of the Magpies in fourth, with both Chelsea and Manchester United also both firmly in the mix behind them.

Fresh from their grim defeat at Old Trafford in midweek, the Lilywhites were again under par against Eddie Howe’s side, with goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron handing the visitors a two-goal lead heading in at the break.

A typically clinical header from Harry Kane just after the interval had raised hopes of a potential fightback for the home side, although the Englishman’s effort ultimately proved a mere consolation as Conte’s men suffered a third defeat in their last five league games.

A rare shining light in that frustrating loss had been that man Kane, with the Three Lions skipper taking his top-flight tally to ten goals in just 12 games thus far, with that stunning run having only been overshadowed by the freakish exploits of Erling Haaland, who leads the scoring charts with a mammoth haul of 17 goals.

The 29-year-old came close to making a breakthrough in the first half only to see his well-worked effort saved by the fee of compatriot Nick Pope, having also showcased his playmaking brilliance by sliding in partner-in-crime Heung-min Son, only for the Korean international to inexplicably squander the opportunity.

The prolific striker was not the only Tottenham figure to have impressed amid defeat, however, with January arrival Rodrigo Bentancur having also been “immense” in the centre of the park, according to Lee Barratt.

That “outstanding” performance – as described by journalist Dan Kilpatrick – saw the 25-year-old notably win ten of his 14 ground duels from his central midfield berth, while also winning two of his three aerial duels.

With the industrious Pierre-Emile Hojberg ruled out due to injury, the Uruguayan international took on the Dane’s all-action role as part of the midfield three, having also won six tackles and made four interceptions on the day.

Not just an asset defensively, the former Juventus maestro also showcased his attacking quality after registering three key passes and successfully completing all four of his attempted dribbles, with his overall match rating of 7.8, as per SofaScore, the third-highest of any player for either side.

That machine-like performance may have been little consolation for both the player and his manager amid the overall frustration of defeat, although it has once again served as a reminder of the £31.5m-rated man’s importance to this Tottenham side.

Leicester City: CBS journalist shares Rodgers sack update

Leicester City chiefs have hatched a plan regarding to the future of manager Brendan Rodgers, according to CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs.

The Lowdown: Foxes fumble…

The Foxes have endured a nightmare start to the 2022/23 Premier League campaign and remain the only team yet to record a single victory in the division this term.

Over their first seven matches, Leicester have also conceded more goals and lost more games than any other team in the league, something which will be of deep concern for Rodgers, who is now under pressure.

The 49-year-old is at the centre of questions over his managerial future in the Midlands, coming just over a year after he guided the Foxes to FA Cup and Community Shield success at Wembley.

The Latest: Rodgers set points target…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jacobs has claimed that the Leicester board have a plan regarding Rodgers’ immediate future at the King Power Stadium.

He explained: “My understanding is that Rodgers has been told that it’s Forest, Bournemouth, and Palace, and the expectation is that Leicester take, I would say, at least six points from those three games.

“Fans may argue that seven points on paper is essential, but I think the board wants to see a run. They want to see those three games catalyse something. If Rodgers can’t get to the end of Palace on October the 15th with those points in the bag, then I think he’s in big, big trouble and the writing will be on the wall because he’ll have been given time.”

The Verdict: Right call?

Taking into account Leicester’s previous success under Rodgers, we believe it is only fair that the former Celtic boss is given enough time to turn the tide.

They arguably have enough quality to turn things around, with the likes of Youri Tielemans and James Maddison in particular standing out as a potentially crucial players.

It would be a sad end for Rodgers to be unceremoniously sacked after achieving such highs at the King Power Stadium, so hopefully there will be an upturn in fortunes soon.

Leeds: Hay drops transfer update

Leeds United may end up making no further additions in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Phil Hay, with The Athletic journalist revealing on a recent episode of The Phil Hay Show that, despite Victor Orta still being linked with a number of targets in the transfer market, supporters could well see Thursday’s transfer deadline come and go without the club making any more signings

Regarding Leeds’ remaining transfer business, Hay said: “From the noises over the weekend, my gut feeling is that we might well go past the window and the deadline without anything else happening, but you never can tell at this stage.”

Marsch won’t like it

While it is true that Leeds have been incredibly active in the summer transfer window thus far, when taking into account that Orta is known to have been looking to add both a new left-back and centre-forward to Jesse Marsch’s squad prior to Thursday’s transfer deadline, Hay’s latest update is sure to be something that the 48-year-old manager won’t like.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and so much more!”]

Indeed, with Partick Bamford once again struggling with injury this season – with knocks having seen the Whites’ first choice number nine start just seven Premier League fixtures last season – coupled with Joe Gelhardt also having suffered with niggling injuries so far in 2022/23, the argument that the Whites are in need of much greater depth up top is a very easy one to make.

Furthermore, with both Junior Firpo and Stuart Dallas also being ruled out due to knocks at present, in addition to the former having struggled with the pace of the Premier League last season – averaging an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.60 last time out, ranking him as Leeds’ seventh-worst performer in the league – it is also evident that the left of Marsch’s backline is an area of the American’s squad that requires strengthening.

As such, while it is true that Leeds have started their 2022/23 campaign in impressive form – with the Whites currently sitting in fifth place after four games played – should Orta wish to give Marsch the best possible chance of avoiding a repeat of last season’s fight for survival, it would appear as if the Spaniard simply must do all he can to sign both a left-back and a striker in the coming days.

However, following Hay’s latest update, this does not appear overly likely – something that is sure to come as a gutting blow to both supporters and Marsch alike.
