Liverpool’s "special" teen Salah replacement could explode under Slot

The 2024 summer transfer window will be one of the most interesting times for Liverpool fans in recent years. They are set for huge change on the managerial front, with Jurgen Klopp departing and Arne Slot set to take over as manager.

Klopp is set to leave Anfield after almost a decade in charge and eight major trophies, including a Champions League trophy in 2018/19 and the Reds’ only Premier League title to date, in 2019/20. He will depart the club as a Premier League legend.

Jurgen Klopp lifts the Champions League

With Klopp’s departure imminent it does raise the question of whether any other players or staff will follow him out of the exit door at Anfield. It has already been confirmed that his long-term assist coach, Pepijn Lijnders, will depart. The Dutchman is set to forge his own career in management, joining RB Salzburg next season.

The likes of Thiago and Virgil van Dijk could also leave Liverpool when Klopp’s reign comes to an end next week. The Spaniard is set to depart, confirmed by The Athletic’s James Pearce, although Van Dijk will surely stay, explaining in a recent interview that he will be “a part of” the “big transition” set to occur at Anfield this summer.

However, there could be one other Liverpool legend who could play his final game in a Liverpool shirt next weekend, bowing out with his fellow club legend Klopp.

Legendary winger could leave Liverpool

The player in question here is Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah, who has been linked with a move away from Liverpool when Klopp’s time at the club ends against Wolves at Anfield next Sunday.

There is no doubt that Salah is a Liverpool and Premier League legend. He has 211 goals and 89 assists in 348 games for the Reds, which includes 157 goals in the Premier League, although two of those came for Chelsea.

However, former Egypt forward Mido suggested back in February that Salah could follow Klopp out of the door at Anfield in the summer. The former Tottenham striker claims that “contracts have been signed” for the Liverpool winger to play in Saudi Arabia next season.

However, other reports from the likes of Sky Sports claim Liverpool expect their star man to stay at the club regardless of Klopp’s decision to leave, explaining that “Liverpool are not planning to sell” Salah this summer.

Jurgen Klopp and Mohamed Salah

Whilst his future is still up in the air, the Reds would need to line up a replacement for Salah if he does leave Anfield this summer.

Having been linked with the likes of Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, there might be one young player, already at the club, whom Liverpool could promote as a replacement for Salah.

Liverpool's readymade Salah replacement

Young winger Ben Doak could be the best in-house candidate to replace Salah this summer. The Scotland U21 international has already been given several first-team opportunities at Liverpool over the last two seasons and is very highly thought of by Klopp. He joined the club from Celtic in 2022 for a fee of around £600k.

Klopp name-dropped 18-year-old Doak in an interview recently, explaining that the youngster is a “special boy, really confident, has something nobody else delivers really”, before going on to praise his “straight-forward bravery”.

Indeed, Klopp has given silky dribbler Doak plenty of opportunities already to play first-team football. The winger has played for Liverpool on ten occasions so far, which includes three Premier League appearances over the past two seasons.

Ben Doak for Liverpool

Whilst Doak has not found the back of the net, or registered an assist for Liverpool yet, he has been extremely productive for the academy. The 18-year-old has scored 11 goals and registered eight assists so far at youth level, and it feels only a matter of time before he scores for the first-team. Indeed, he feels well set up to explode under another forward-thinking coach in Slot.

Spending the quoted £85.7m on Rodrygo might be a powerful move from Liverpool, but that money could well be better spread if they prioritise the development of the electric Doak. Instead of signing the Brazilian, the Reds could bring in a cheaper option who they can phase out as Doak becomes a more prominent first-team option.

He may not be far away from being ready to step into first-team action regularly, although replacing Salah will be no mean feat for the young Scot. Should he get a chance to show his worth under Slot, Liverpool could have a ready-made Salah replacement waiting to explode onto the scene.

Jos Buttler: Reservations about playing during pandemic 'won't be held against you'

Jos Buttler has conceded that it would be “completely natural” for players to be apprehensive about returning to action behind closed doors while the UK is still coming to grips with the coronavirus outbreak, and said it had been made clear by the England management that personal decisions around safety would be respected.Buttler also touched on the subject of “performance anxiety”, as he and his team-mates attempt to get themselves in the right physical and mental shape for a truncated summer of cricket, with the ECB looking to salvage as much of its international calendar as possible. He suggested that those involved in matches played behind closed doors would need “coping strategies for the different scenarios we’re going to come up against” – a reminder that welfare provisions will need to extend beyond simply trying to mitigate against the spread of Covid-19.England’s players have been well briefed throughout the UK’s lockdown period by Ashley Giles, the managing director of England men’s cricket, and medical officers Nick Peirce and Gurjit Bhogal, and several have voiced their trust in the process of getting back on the field. The next significant steps are likely to be taken in the coming days, with players given individualised training programmes.ALSO READ: Closed doors could open way for fringe playersAs part of the phased return of professional sport in the UK, government guidance was published on Wednesday stating that elite athletes must be free to opt out of the return to training without fear of “unreasonable steps being taken against them”.Concerns have been raised by some Premier League footballers about the rush to restart their season in the coming weeks, but Buttler said he had “complete faith” in the ECB’s medical advice. Should anyone wish to opt out of England duty, however, there is recent precedent to fall back on – in 2016-17, Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales both decided against touring Bangladesh due to security concerns (Buttler captained the team in Morgan’s absence), only to subsequently return.”I think that’s been made clear from Ash and Gurj and Nick Pierce, who have all been great at communicating with us, that the safety of the players is going to be paramount to any cricket being played and if you don’t feel comfortable then that is your own decision,” Buttler said.”I think it’d be very fair to say that if someone had reservations about playing, or didn’t feel comfortable for certain reasons, be that affecting their family or however that looks, I think in these times that wouldn’t be held against you.”I’ve got complete faith in the medical team, they’ve been brilliant about discussing everything with us as players and giving us clear information about how they look to implement things to get back to playing.”West Indies are expected to be England’s first opponents, with a planned three-Test series being pushed back into July, and it has been reported that their players would be given the option of declining a spot on the tour.”I’m sure they’ve been having discussions,” Buttler said. “Individually, it’ll look different for each and every player and I’m sure all those voices will be heard. I think it would be completely natural to have some apprehension and anxiety about it and lots of questions to ask. In similar situations, like going to Bangladesh, you talk it over with your family a lot, you talk as players and I think you just have to come to a decision that’s right for you. I’m sure no player would be under pressure to do something they didn’t want to do.Getty Images

“I know that’s been made clear to England players – if you feel uncomfortable about anything you can speak to the doctors, speak to Ash, and you’re not being forced into anything you don’t want to do. So, ultimately, it’ll come down to you as a player and of course they’ll be having those discussions about what it looks like to them as a side.”While Buttler said the unexpected break in cricket’s crowded programme had left him feeling refreshed, the challenge of preparing for Test cricket after several months without competitive action is likely to be a significant one. England’s last outing was an aborted warm-up match in Sri Lanka in mid-March, and most players have barely picked up bat or ball while enduring seven weeks of lockdown back in the UK.Buttler’s position in the Test team was under considerable scrutiny when England left for Sri Lanka, with Ben Foakes included in the party and question marks over the wicketkeeping role, and he admitted that the thought of playing again in such unusual circumstances was somewhat daunting.”I think for me, it was yesterday or the day before reading in the paper training could be starting again for England players, I had some natural apprehension and anxiety about that,” he said. “I don’t really know necessarily why. I think probably it was natural performance anxiety you haven’t felt for seven weeks, you’ve had freedom from that. There’s lots of different feelings. How will it look? What will my cricket look like?”I think because we’re not going back to cricket as we know it, it’s all very new and very much step-by-step at the moment. People can only give you week-by-week assurances, so that makes it very difficult to plan. So anytime there’s uncertainty, speaking for myself, you have natural apprehension and I think it’ll take me a few days to sort of work out those feelings and work out the process for me of how I can control that.”Say we progress and get into playing some cricket, it’s going to be different and behind closed doors, [so] I think it’s important for all the players to have coping strategies for all the different scenarios we’re going to come up against.”

Liverpool have "held talks" with dream Slot alternative who’s "perfect"

Liverpool will be bidding to keep their Premier League title hopes alive with victory away at Goodison this evening, although there may be a sense of distraction among the travelling party amid the continued hunt to find Jurgen Klopp's successor in the dugout.

Leading target Xabi Alonso has already outlined his commitment to Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen, while talk has also gone cold regarding Sporting CP sensation, Ruben Amorim, with the Portuguese coach also earning admiring glances from West Ham United.

With the end of the season fast approaching, it looks as if the Reds have identified a new frontrunner in the form of Feyenoord boss, Arne Slot, although the Dutchman is seemingly not the only high-profile name under consideration…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool's search to replace Jurgen Klopp

As per various sources – including The Athletic – the Merseyside outfit have already made contact regarding the potential appointment of former Tottenham Hotspur target, Slot, with the 45-year-old having come to prominence after leading the Rotterdam side to the Eredivisie title in 2022/23.

Despite the interest in the one-time AZ Alkmaar head coach, journalist Robin Bairner of Football Transfers has also revealed that Liverpool are keeping their options open, having "held talks" with Lille's Paulo Fonseca.

The report suggests that those discussions took place earlier in the season, with the Portuguese said to be 'admired' by those at Anfield for the work he has done both in France and in prior stints at the likes of AS Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk.

How Fonseca compares to Arne Slot

There is much intrigue surrounding the aforementioned Slot due to his recent success in his native Holland, with the in-demand coach even lauded as "similar to Pep Guardiola" by journalist Marcel van der Kraan, due to his "ultra-attacking" approach.

Fonseca, it must be said, is also intent on implementing a style of play that is pleasing on the eye, having previously told The Athletic that for him, "it's never just about the result", as he seeks for his sides to "dominate and create more chances than the opposition".

Lille manager Paulo Fonseca

In pursuit of trying to "create something spectacular", in his own words, the 51-year-old has utilised that approach to good effect in recent years, notably winning a host of domestic honours during his time in Ukraine – including winning three successive league titles.

As for the current campaign, Fonseca has steered his Lille side to fourth in the Ligue 1 table, having also reached the last eight of the Europa Conference League, where his side were narrowly defeated by Aston Villa on penalties.

Much like Slot, any move for the Mozambique-born coach may represent something of a gamble as he never worked at a truly elite club – perhaps Roma aside – yet according to Fabrizio Romano, he does have the credentials to flourish in the Premier League.

Discussing Spurs' interest in him back in 2021, Romano said that Fonseca "is perfect in the dressing room and perfect in his relationship with the players", perhaps making him an ideal candidate to try and fill the hefty void left behind by the departing Klopp.

As Romano stated, the Liverpool target was also "always appreciated by the fans" during his two-year stint in Rome between 2019 and 2021, ensuring a connection could well be made between himself and the Anfield crowd, if a deal is to be agreed.

As such, while it may be Slot who is taking the limelight at present, Fonseca is certainly not someone to be overlooked as the race to replace Klopp heats up.

Tanveer Sangha the hero as Australia beat Afghanistan

ScorecardTanveer Sangha had the game of his life, picking up four wickets with his legspin and then, perhaps more impressively, withstanding the pressure of a run-chase so well that he he hit the penultimate ball of the game for a thumping six to win it for Australia.Sangha had done his bit to keep Afghanistan down to 191 for 7, the 18-year old responsible for how only one of the Afghanistan batters could make more than 25. That man, their captain Farhan Zakhil, finished unbeaten on 91 off 132 balls. It was a highly impressive effort in a thrillingly low-scoring game and its value became immediately apparent when Afghanistan had Australia at 2 for 3 at the start of their chase.Sam Fanning, the opener who did very well to defy India recently, got together with Lachlan Hearne and steadied the ship but Afghanistan struck again, tugging the score down from 99 for 3 to 123 for 6 at the start of the 39th over.Australia now needed 69 runs in 71 balls and into this cauldron walked Sangha and he promptly clattered 46 runs off 40 balls including five fours and that winning six. Prior to him, the best strike-rate from anyone in the game – having faced a minimum of 15 balls – was a paltry 76. Sangha made his runs at 115 all the while knowing the game was on the line and he couldn’t afford even a single mistake.
ScorecardLegspinner Priviledge Chesa led the way in an all-round show by Zimbabwe, who overwhelmed Scotland in the 11th place play-off match.Batting first, Zimbabwe maintained a good run-rate throughout the innings but it was the death that they really exploded, with 94 runs coming in the last 10 overs. Zimbabwe had good contributions throughout, and even though nobody made it to three figures, there were three half-centuries.Tadiwanashe Marumani made 90 at the top of the order, Milton Shumba made 69 off 73 from No.3 and the two shared a 138-run stand in just 21.2 overs for the second wicket. Emannuel Bawa provided the thrust at the end with 56 off 36 from No.6. No Scotland bowler escaped punishment, with all of them going at greater than a run a ball, apart from Jasper Davidson who bowled only three overs.Scotland’s chase was in trouble early and they didn’t have substantial partnerships. Allrounder Daniel Cairns was the only one who made it past a half-century, scoring 58 from No.6. Cairns was the ninth wicket to fall, becoming Chesa’s fifth victim. Chesa dismantled the Scotland middle order, sending them tumbling with figures of 5 for 49.

وأتم: “الرجال الموجودون هنا يقاتلون ليكونوا معنا، 24 ساعة في اليوم، لن أنسى هذا”.

Aston Villa’s 8/10 star was even better than Diaby against Ajax

Aston Villa cruised into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League last night with a huge 4-0 victory over Ajax.

Villa Park was bouncing from the first minute until the last, and the atmosphere was only enhanced after Ollie Watkins opened the scoring in the 25th minute.

However, shortly after, Unai Emery’s star striker was forced off with an injury, which certainly dampened the mood slightly.

Nevertheless, a Leon Bailey goal on the hour mark gave the hosts some breathing room, before a late flurry extended the lead.

With that excellent performance in mind, let’s take a look at two players who excelled under the pressure to progress.

Moussa Diaby’s stats versus Ajax

Moussa Diaby started the evening in his usual second-striker role behind Watkins, and he had one of his best games in a Villa shirt.

Birmingham World reporter Charlie Haffenden handed the French forward an 8/10 in his post-match player ratings, commenting that Diaby put in a "much-improved display" and "was far better with his decision-making." The winger's statistics from the tie certainly mirror that rating.

With Ajax having more of the ball, it suited Diaby’s strengths perfectly, providing the 24-year-old with the opportunity to use his ball-carrying skills and pace on the counterattack.

The former Bayer Leverkusen star completed 100% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore, made two key passes, and had three shots on target throughout the tie.

Diaby also grabbed the fourth goal with a lovely, composed finish into the near post, which rounded off an almost perfect night for Villa, but there was one player who really stood out in particular once again.

Douglas Luiz’s game in numbers

It’s no surprise to see that Douglas Luiz was once again instrumental in a Villa win, with that being a common occurrence this campaign.

The Brazilian also received an 8/10 rating from Birmingham World in what was yet another confident and dominant performance from the midfielder, where he displayed his complete skillset under extreme pressure after that tough defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

Luiz was in control throughout, regardless of whether his side had possession of the ball or not, with the table below proving why he was absolutely immense.

As you can see, not only did the number 6 retain the ball well, as shown by his pass accuracy and possession lost stats, but he also displayed his creativity.

The former Manchester City man took the corner for the Watkins goal and also set up Bailey for the second, with his two assists and four key passes making him a class above the other midfielders on the field.

Luiz also won 100% of his ground duels, made two tackles, and wasn’t dribbled past once, which highlights the defensive security he brought to the team.

Overall, it was a perfect night for Villa and a perfect performance from Luiz, who continues to perform to such a high standard.

Bangladesh leave for T20I series in India with depleted squad

Mohammad Isam30-Oct-20191:19

Shariar: Everyone is shocked by the news of Shakib’s ban

Named Bangladesh’s T20I captain just over an hour after Shakib Al Hasan was banned by the ICC on Tuesday, Mahmudullah has called on his players to “play with our heart” in the three-match series in India.Shakib’s absence has weakened an already depleted team further. Tamim Iqbal had earlier opted out of the tour, while Mohammad Saifuddin was sidelined with an injury. Mohammad Mithun, Taijul Islam and Abu Hider have since been brought in as replacements, with Mahmudullah promoted to the leadership role.ALSO READ: Bal – Just what was Shakib thinking? The conversations centred on Shakib as the team assembled at the airport in Dhaka for the trip across to New Delhi, where the first T20I will be played on November 3.”We have to play with our heart for the country,” Mahmudullah said. “I think this [Shakib’s absence] will work as motivation for us. I think there’s no greater honour than playing for the country. The responsibility to lead the side lies with me, so I will try to give it my all.”The statistics don’t lie. It is a tough ask, but it is not impossible. We have to perform as a team, and ensure we take advantage of every opportunity.”In what is a rather young side, Mahmudullah will have only Mushfiqur Rahim to lean on for help with Shakib and Tamim out.”Definitely I will miss him [Shakib], since we have played together for so long,” Mushfiqur said. “It is tough to play without him as he is the No. 1 player. But it is also a good opportunity for youngsters.”If someone was injured for a year, which could have been anyone, then it would have been an opening for the younger players. It is a challenge to beat India in their home turf but a challenge also means an opportunity.”Left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny, who has made a return to the senior side after being banned for an illegal action in 2016, said, “Shakib has been the No. 1 allrounder in the world for a long time. I would have been more comfortable as a bowler knowing he is also around. He has a good sense of wickets in India given his experience in the IPL. So we will definitely miss him.”Bangladesh will play two Test matches, including a day-nighter in Kolkata, after the T20Is, with Mominul Haque leading the long-format side.

8/10 Wolves star outshone Sarabia vs Sheffield United

Wolverhampton Wanderers picked up their 11th Premier League win of the campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Sheffield United.

Despite dominating the ball throughout, they were unable to build upon their first-half one goal lead. Wolves had just one more shot than their bottom-placed opponent, which further proves they didn't completely dominate the tie.

A lack of creativity in the attack was apparent in the second half, which led to a handful of nervy moments towards the end.

Gary O’Neil will be pleased with the three points and the result, but the performance left a lot to be desired, and the showing was a huge drop off in quality and intensity compared to last week's 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Nonetheless, the Old Gold climbed to eighth in the table.

Pablo Sarabia’s performance in numbers

Pablo Sarabia showed his quality and experience against the Blades this afternoon, with his goal separating the two sides.

Throughout the game, the 31-year-old's technical ability allowed him to evade the pressure of Chris Wilder’s midfield to control the game for Wolves.

The Spaniard was handed an 8/10 rating by Birmingham World for his performance, and his statistics also prove that he was the host's biggest threat.

Sarabia had five shots, one key pass, and lost the ball 20 times, which shows that he was willing to take risks to help the side increase their advantage.

However, the Spaniard wasn't the only hero for O'Neil on Sunday.

Rayan Ait Nouri’s performance in numbers

Rayan Ait Nouri is such a reliable player for the manager to call upon, and the left-wing back role he features in is absolutely perfect for his skill set.

The Algerian proved that once again today during his 77 minutes on the field. In the first half, the defender provided a wonderful, curling cross with his weak foot for Sarabia’s header, which ended up being the winner.

Without that moment of brilliance, Wolves could have been walking away with just a point instead of three, and the table below shows a handful of his key stats from the tie.

Ait Nouri was extremely comfortable in possession, only losing the ball on four occasions throughout the game while also completing one successful dribble and creating the winner.

However, the stat that stands out above all is his 98% pass accuracy, which means he misplaced just one of his 55 passes. This is even more impressive considering he was involved in the play frequently, drifting inside to get on the ball, as shown by his 68 touches.

The full-back was everywhere, and he maintained concentration defensively despite the side having 63% of the ball. His three tackles often helped his side regain the ball instantly, preventing Sheffield United from maintaining any real momentum.

Birmingham World gave the 23-year-old an 8/10 rating for his performance, and it was another quality showing by Ait Nouri.

Tottenham reporter gives update on Joe Rodon’s chances of joining Leeds

Leeds United fans have been handed an interesting hint on the transfer front after a Spurs reporter dropped information on the future of some of Tottenham's loanees, including Joe Rodon.

Leeds United flying after win at Plymouth

Daniel Farke's Leeds side are caught up in a titanic battle for an immediate return to the Premier League after being relegated last May. Two-thirds of the way through the Championship campaign, they sit in second place, moving closer to Leicester after a sensational win at Plymouth was followed by a shock defeat for the Foxes on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Southampton and Ipswich Town sit just a few points further back with a game in hand on the Elland Road side. With two of these four sides likely to end up in the play-offs, and at least one certain to spend another season in the Championship, it is approaching crunch time for the Yorkshire side.

“Aggressive” Leeds man now in line for “big” pay rise at Elland Road

Leeds have been in scintillating form of late, and the 49ers have taken notice.

Joe Rodon has quickly become a fan-favorite at Elland Road during his short stint there, with the Welshman signed on loan from Tottenham in the summer following a tough time with Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennais.

Still just 26 years old, he has formed a formidable partnership with Pascal Struijk and has helped the Elland Road outfit have the best defensive record in the Championship, something that their push for an instant return to the top flight has been built upon.

With Spurs having signed three centre-backs since the arrival of new boss Ange Postecoglou last summer, the future looks bleak for the former Swansea defender, and Leeds will be keen to keep him on a permanent basis.

Spurs writer John Wenham was quizzed on the shape of Tottenham's future backline, including the fate of fellow centre-back Japhet Tanganga: “If Tanganga doesn’t play between now and the end of the season, I think that Tottenham will simply just release him. If he does play, then I think Spurs will take up the option to extend his contract by one year, and then look to sell him for somewhere around the £3 million mark."

Then, as far as Leeds fans are concerned came the all important line about Rodon, where it was also implied his future lies away from north London: “We suddenly look very strong in defence which means that losing the likes of Tanganga and Joe Rodon would have very little impact on the first-team squad.”

Grouped in with Tanganga, Rodon is not out of contract this summer like the Englishman, but rather his deal runs until 2025 meaning that he is unlikely to leave for free. However, with no place in Postecoglou's plans it is hard to see too much of a market for the Welshman, meaning that Leeds could find themselves at the front of the queue and able to snag a bargain.
