Enzo Maresca now personally wants £90 million Barcelona duo at Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is personally eyeing a £90 million Barcelona duo, with his transfer plans starting to take shape ahead of the summer.

Signings Chelsea could make for Maresca this summer

The window's opening on June 14 is fast approaching, and reports suggest that Maresca is set to be backed by Chelsea chiefs, following his appointment to replace Mauricio Pochettino before next season.

Chelsea have made an offer to Fulham centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo as one potential option to bolster Maresca's backline, with the Englishman out of contract at the end of next month and able to sign for the Blues on a free deal.

Meanwhile, it remains the case that co-Chelsea sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are targeting a prolific new striker as well. Indeed, reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea could make five signings for Maresca when the window reopens.

"They like his ideas and believe he’s a very positive coach – a dynamic, modern, young manager obsessed with possession football to control a game," said Romano on Chelsea's appointment of Maresca (via his Dailybriefing).

"I said last week when Chelsea were considering firing Mauricio Pochettino that this was the kind of manager they wanted, and here he is. And remember – it will be a busy summer for Chelsea, with around five signings, maybe less, maybe more, but for sure they are looking at goalkeepers, maybe or one or two centre-backs, and they’re also looking at central strikers and wingers. Chelsea will be busy, and Maresca will be involved.

"Of course, one signing is already agreed and that’s for talented Brazilian wonderkid Estevao Willian – everything is being reviewed and signed for this big signing for the future, who will join in 2025 from Palmeiras."

Some reports have claimed that La Liga could be a fruitful talent pool for Stamford Bridge chiefs, and specifically Barcelona. Chelsea are targeting centre-back Ronald Araujo as one example, with the likes of Jules Kounde and Raphinha also linked.

Kounde is thought to command a £43 million price tag, while Raphinha could leave Barcelona for around £47 million. The £90 million duo, as per reports in Spain, are now on Maresca's personal radar.

Maresca personally wants Kounde and Raphinha at Chelsea

A Spanish report this week claims Maresca wants both Kounde and Raphinha at Chelsea, as he identifies his summer targets behind the scenes. The former Man City backroom staff member is apparently set to make "significant" demands, with Maresca looking to reshape Pochettino's squad in his own image.

Raphinha bagged nine goals and 11 assists across his appearances in La Liga and the Champions League last season, with 25-year-old France international Kounde starting 32 Spanish top-flight matches as a mainstay under Xavi.

Joe Clarke century drives Notts, but Rushworth keeps elusive victory waiting

ECB Reporters Network08-Sep-2020Despite centuries from Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke, Nottinghamshire still have work to do if they are to end county cricket’s most unwanted record.Without a first-class victory since June 2018, Notts will go into the final day of their Bob Willis Trophy match against Durham at Trent Bridge looking for early wickets. The visitors closed on 131 for 2 in their second innings, an overall lead of just three runs, after the home county had been dismissed for 422, earlier in the day.Duckett only added four runs to his overnight score before being dismissed for 150, with Clarke going on to contribute 133 as Nottinghamshire reached maximum batting points before being bowled out in 101 overs. The hosts’ first-innings advantage of 128 would have been significantly greater but for an heroic effort from Chris Rushworth, who took 7 for 108.Neither Duckett nor Clarke have experienced a single red-ball victory between them in Nottinghamshire colours since moving from Northamptonshire – and Worcestershire – respectively. Both though are finding their best form at this belated stage of the shortened season. Duckett had done his best work on the second day and fell at the start of the third, shortly after reaching his 150 from 208 balls, with 23 fours. His dismissal ended a stand of 195 with Clarke, who survived being dropped twice in reaching his 17th first-class hundred from 154 balls, with 13 boundaries.Durham’s catching frailties also gifted Steven Mullaney a couple of lives, as Paul Coughlin twice spilled the Nottinghamshire captain at third slip.Mullaney’s good fortune eventually ran out on 41 when he shouldered arms to Rushworth and lost his off stump.Samit Patel came and went cheaply, pinned lbw in his crease by Brydon Carse but Tom Moores was able to stick around with Clarke in a hard-hitting stand of 75.The second new ball altered the complexion of the day as Nottinghamshire’s last five wickets went down for only 15 runs, in 3.5 overs.Rushworth started the collapse, having Clarke caught at slip before dismissing Peter Trego in the same over to collect his 26th five-wicket haulBen Raine celebrated enthusiastically when he gained a positive lbw verdict against Moores, leaving Rushworth to quickly send back Matt Carter and Jake Ball.Sean Dickson and Alex Lees put on 67 as Durham began their second innings, before Trego sent back Lees for 27.Dickson’s seven previous innings for his new county had mustered only 41 runs but he more than doubled that in reaching a half century from 106 deliveries. He advanced to 56 and brought the scores level before being bowled by a beauty from Patel that turned sharply to clip the off peg.Michael Jones, with a highest career score of 39 not out, will begin the final day alongside nightwatchman Rushworth, whose bowling exploits clearly weren’t enough for one day.

Mohammad Nabi, Roston Chase, Scott Kuggeleijn inflict third loss on St Kitts and Nevis Patriots

Andre Fletcher and Mark Deyal set St Lucia Zouks on track for a commanding score with their 56-run partnership off 30 balls. Mohammad Nabi provided the late thrust to take the Zouks to 172 for 6. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots could rarely extend their good periods to put real pressure on the Zouks, who claimed early wickets and kept the Patriots innings on a leash. The ten-run loss is the Patriots’ third in the tournament, while the Zouks have claimed their second win in three matches. The Patriots showed a little fight – seamer Rayad Emrit took a wicket and conceded only 14 from his four overs, before Denesh Ramdin hit 46 off 35 to provide some substance to the innings. But the Patriots lost wickets too frequently to make a serious charge at the target. The offspin of Roston Chase made dents to the start of the Patriots innings, and then Scott Kuggeleijn’s medium pace decked them in the middle and the end.Chase keeps it tightChase might immediately strike you as a player that suits the longer formats better, but he is proving his all-round utility to the Zouks in this tournament. He hit a fifty in their first game, then took two middle-order wickets in the rain-hit win against the Barbados Tridents on Thursday. On Saturday, he only managed 4 with the bat but was outstanding with the ball, taking a wicket in the powerplay before claiming two others, mostly relying on drift and changes of pace. He gave away only 12 runs in his four overs, and did not concede a boundary. The Patriots were scoring at ten an over when he began his spell, and only 7.45 an over when he completed it, bowling unchanged right through.Nabi hustles hardChase’s bowling performance though, was still not as important to the Zouks’ victory as the all-round proficiency that Nabi brought. The Zouks were 140 for 6 at the end of the 18th over, and seemed headed only for a score of about 160. But Nabi crashed two sixes off Sohail Tanvir over deep midwicket and then took 16 runs off Sheldon Cottrell’s final over. The Zouks reaped 32 off the last two overs thanks to Nabi, who faced all but one of the deliveries in those overs. With the ball, he took the vital wicket of Chris Lynn in the third over, thanks to a stunning one-handed catch by Najibullah Zadran at square leg. Nabi would finish with figures of 1 for 17 from his four overs.Ramdin gets busyOn another day, Ramdin’s innings could have been the centrepiece of a successful chase. He ran hard through the middle overs, and hit sixes off Obed McCoy and Kuggeleijn to shake a nosediving run rate into life. He never got a partner that stuck with him for long enough; a 25-run stand with Kieran Powell was the biggest partnership he was involved in.Kuggeleijn’s late burstAlthough most of the damage to the Patriots innings had been done at the top of the order, Kuggeleijn did nevertheless ensure there would be no late resurgence. He took three wickets off four balls, dismissing Ramdin and Tanvir towards the end of his third over before having Emrit hole out off the first ball of his fourth. He finished with the game’s best figures of 4 for 33.

Bunbury Festival cancelled due to impact of Covid-19

Eton-Harrow and Oxford-Cambridge matches also called off because of pandemic

Matt Roller19-Jun-2020English cricket’s most prestigious junior tournament has been cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Bunbury Festival was founded by David English – who had previously managed the Bee Gees and Eric Clapton in his career as a music agent – in 1987, and brings the 56 best Under-15 players in the country together for a week-long tournament. It became a formalised part of the ECB’s player pathway in 2018, and more than 90 of its graduates have gone on to play international cricket. In an interview in the last year, English revealed that he had taken a late-night phone call from the England squad after the World Cup final to thank him for his role in their development. Ten of the 11 players picked for the final had played at the festival. But the festival has been cancelled for 2020, with Alun Powell, the ECB’s National Talent Manager, telling those involved it was “not feasible to run the programme” in an email this week. It had been due to take place between August 2-7 at Eastbourne College.Powell said that the ECB retains the ambition of staging cricket for young players on the pathway this summer, the nature of which will be dictated by the wider landscape of the game. An ECB spokesperson said: “There will be a wider update next week around national competitions and more information will be available then”.The news follows the cancellation of two of cricket’s longest-standing fixtures for this year, with the MCC confirming that Lord’s would not stage the annual encounters between either Oxford and Cambridge or Eton and Harrow.A fixture between the two universities has been played at Lord’s every year in peacetime since 1851, but has fallen by the wayside due to the pandemic. In 2001, the Lord’s fixture became a one-day match, with the first-class fixture moving to a home/away system. This year’s four-day match was due to be the final one between the universities before the fixture lost first-class status. Graham Charlesworth, Oxford’s head coach, said: “We are not ruling out the possibility of getting the two historic clubs together for some form of cricket this summer, but this will depend on a number of factors and decisions made around the wider game.”Eton v Harrow lays claim to being one of the longest-running fixtures in cricket, dating back to 1805, and has been staged at Lord’s every year in peacetime since 1856. This year’s was due to be Mark Ramprakash’s first as Harrow’s head coach since his appointment in December, but has also been shelved.Johny Marsden, Harrow’s master-in-charge of cricket, said that the fixture would not be played elsewhere this year, but “will be back to normal in 2021” assuming the public health situation allows.

Losing whole summer would cost over £300m – ECB chief executive

Tom Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive, has estimated that an entire season without cricket will cost the game in England and Wales “well in excess of £300 million”.In a letter to PCA chief executive Tony Irish, seen by ESPNcricinfo, Harrison admitted that the ECB is “having to reset our future plans across the whole game in order to ensure its long-term survival” in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which threatens to wipe out much of the English summer. The ECB unveiled an initial £61m support package on Tuesday night, aimed at ensuring both professional and recreational cricket can withstand the impact of the ongoing crisis. But with its reserves worth £11m in 2018-19 – down from £73m in 2015-16 – the potential cost of a season without cricket is a major concern.ALSO READ: PCA stall on ECB’s request for players’ 20% pay cutAs things stand, the season’s start has been pushed back to May 28 at the earliest, though that is little more than a holding date. The ECB is currently modelling what the season might look like with possible start dates in June, July and August, as well as planning for games to be played behind closed doors. In his letter, dated March 29, Harrison described the ongoing pandemic as “the biggest challenge the sport has faced in the modern era” and admitted that “although the full extent and impact of the pandemic on cricket is as yet unknown, it is already clear that it will be extremely significant”.”At the start of 2020, cricket in England and Wales was in a very strong financial position,” Harrison wrote. “Our recent renewals of media rights contracts and commercial partnerships all but guarantee our revenues and provide a high level of relative security for the next five years. With this relative security, we have been able to build a strategy for growth, based on strong investment in our core, to grow cricket and thus secure our long-term future.”This strategy has seen hugely increased investment and commitment to our players across our international and domestic game, with substantial improvements both to the pay and the conditions under which professional cricketers are employed across first-class county clubs (including raised salary collar and caps).”We have also been clear that investment into grassroots cricket is critical to creating a sustainable sport, hence our commitment to recreational programmes, to reinvigorating cricket in schools, to the women’s and girls’ game and creating the next generation of volunteers.”The investment, however, is fundamentally based on the proviso that cricket is played and thus the value proposition delivered to our broadcast and commercial partners. Whilst a range of scenarios is contemplated to account for lost matches or series across the term, a situation like the one we are facing is beyond the scope of any risk assessment and therefore has extremely serious consequences for the game’s revenues. With this public health crisis, and its likely impact on this coming season, we are thus forced to review every investment and every line of cost.”The English season has been delayed until May 28 at the earliest•Getty Images

Harrison went on to state that “everyone is feeling the pain”, listing broadcasters, commercial partners, county stakeholders, and “ordinary and loyal cricket fans” among the groups affected.”As I have said, we can only estimate the total financial impact on the game, which will not be clear for some time, but by way of offering an indication of the potential scale of the loss to the game, losing an entire cricket season – which is not an outlandish scenario – will cost cricket in England and Wales well in excess of £300m,” Harrison wrote.”Our absolute priority in the face of this challenge is firstly, to ensure the public safety of our people – our staff, players and colleagues around the game, but secondly, that the cricket network remains intact, and emerges from this crisis in a state to resume our trajectory towards a bright future.”An excerpt from Tom Harrison’s letter to Tony Irish•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Harrison himself has taken a 25% salary cut for at least the next three months – he was paid £719,175 in 2019 – while ESPNcricinfo understands that other executives have volunteered a 20% cut. Some ECB staff were informed on Wednesday morning of a decision to furlough them.On Tuesday, Harrison dismissed criticism of the ECB’s forward planning. “You can normally make business models and forecasts where you might get a 15-20% fall in revenue,” he said. “[But] there are very few businesses that would put a complete drop in revenues to zero on a risk register.”I don’t think there is a big enough reserves pot to anticipate this sort of challenge. And it is important to base any judgement on our reserves policy against the money that has gone into the network: we have a thriving network, a high-performing sport and well-paid players.”Eoin Morgan, England’s white-ball captain, said that “the serious nature of the situation economically and financially for the game is something that we have never come across”.”Certainly I’ve never experienced anything like it and don’t think anyone else has,” Morgan said. “Times are still uncertain at the moment, there’s information coming out daily, weekly, and the most important information is probably yet to come given the last week or 10 days we have had in isolation.”People are waiting to see what sort of impact that has had on the virus and if it has slowed things down or stopped the increase in infection. Realistically we can’t think about playing, when our first game will be, or how many we will play until the situation is downgraded from a pandemic.”

Clement can ease Ridvan blow with Rangers’ "surprise" Barisic rival

Glasgow Rangers return to Premiership action just three days after their dismal weekend defeat in the Highlands.

The Ibrox side were shocked by Ross County, who grabbed their first-ever win over the Light Blues, winning 3-2, and it was very much deserved.

The Gers looked off the pace from the word go, with their two goals coming via an own goal and a penalty.

Philippe Clement will certainly be making a few changes to his starting XI ahead of the rearranged match against Dundee this evening and, hopefully, the third attempt at playing this tie will go ahead successfully following two postponements.

Rangers team news vs Dundee

The Belgian manager gave an injury update surrounding his squad during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, saying:

“I can change the team and it is always about choosing who is best for the games to come. It is important to manage the squad properly and take injuries into account.

Mohammed Diomande

“Ridvan Yilmaz and Mohamed Diomande won't be ready for tomorrow, Leon Balogun has been sick the past few days so he is not totally fit. It is about others stepping up when players are out.”

While Yilmaz’s injury was only supposed to be short-term, he is going to miss yet another match and this could give Clement a major selection headache, especially following Borna Barisic’s dismal showing against the Staggies on the weekend.

Borna Barsic’s game in numbers vs Ross County

The Croatian has just a few weeks left on his current contract and his performances recently certainly indicate that his future lies elsewhere.

Barisic has started just five Premiership matches in 2024 so far, deputising for Yilmaz in recent weeks, but has his showing in the Highlands deterred Clement from choosing him in the starting XI again?

He may have won 100% of his total duels, yet defensively, he was poor. During the match, the 31-year-old managed to complete just 14 of his 21 attempted passes, while taking only 38 touches.

The defender also lost possession nine times before being subbed off for Dujon Sterling, who arguably should have started the match on the left side of the defence in the first place.

His performance saw Barisic receive a rating of just 3/10 from Glasgow World, with journalist Lewis Anderson stating that the left-back ‘offered next to nothing in attack’ and was ‘very poor’ during his 54 minutes on the pitch.

Borna Barisic

The game this evening is a must-win if Rangers still have ambitions of winning the league trophy, which suggests Barisic must be dropped from the starting XI.

Dujon Sterling could be an alternative at left-back.

Against Celtic two weeks ago, Sterling was deployed as the left-back and performed fairly well during the 3-3 draw.

Not only did he look willing to get on the ball as evidenced by his 72 touches, but the former Chelsea starlet also made one key pass and was fouled six times as he looked to support the attack.

With Diomande missing this evening, however, Sterling may be best placed in the heart of the midfield, replacing Kieran Dowell, who failed to really make an impact when on the field of play.

Dujon Sterling

Against the Staggies, Sterling made two key passes along with delivering four crosses into the box, showing a much greater sense of urgency than Barisic, but he should be offered a start in the middle of the pitch tonight.

The question is, who starts at left-back? Could there perhaps be an academy player who is ready to make the step up into the senior ranks and prove they deserve a place in the team for the rest of the season?

Perhaps Johnly Yfeko could be a perfect alternative to Barisic

Johnly Yfeko could be a future star

Without heaping too much pressure on the youngster, Yfeko has certainly shown plenty of promise during his spell in the academy since arriving at Ibrox back in 2022.

In his first full season with the B team, Yfeko made 14 appearances in the Lowland League, while also being called up to the senior squad on three occasions prior to the enforced break for the World Cup, as Giovanni Van Bronckhorst needed some cover at left-back following some injury problems.

It was under Michael Beale that he began to really showcase his potential, starting off in pre-season. The defender was given precious game time against Newcastle United and Hamburg, and it led to some praise from Beale after he impressed.

“Big Johnly Yfeko again is becoming the big surprise of preseason, making everybody smile.” Said Beale after his performance against the German side and gaining minutes for the first team looked like it was going to set him up nicely for the season ahead.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The defender certainly didn’t have to wait long for his first competitive start for the Gers, making the starting lineup for a League Cup clash against Morton in August.

His display against the second tier outfit was excellent and proved that he could stand up to the rigours of senior football. Yfeko received a match rating of 7/10 from Glasgow Live journalist Alan Galindo for his mature display.

Galindo also wrote of the 20-year-old at the time: ‘Impressed in pre-season and has got his rewards here. A big tackle inside a minute and an even better last ditch challenge in added-time’.

Despite this 90-minute runout, he hasn’t made another appearance for the club since, making the matchday squad on three further occasions – including the two games against Benfica in the Europa League – but with the form that Yilmaz demonstrated, the youngster has been made to bide his time.

Could the clash against Dundee offer a potential opportunity for the former Leicester City starlet, with there seemingly no way he can be as bad as Barisic was against County on the weekend.

Time will tell and hopefully, he at least makes the matchday squad, as there is no doubt the left-back has plenty of promise.

Clement must drop Dowell to unleash "different" £19k-p/w Rangers star

The Light Blues head coach should finally bring the talented midfielder back into the starting XI.

Fabrizio Romano comments on Chelsea links to £9m-a-year Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea are being linked with a potential swoop for ex-boss Thomas Tuchel, and reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has now commented on the story.

Tuchel eyeing shock return to Chelsea

The Bayern Munich boss is confirmed to be leaving Bavaria this summer, with much being made on his next potential landing spot.

Manager receives Chelsea offer as Stamford Bridge chiefs travel for meeting

Pochettino’s future is still uncertain.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 12, 2024

Tuchel's highly decorated managerial resume not only makes him an enticing candidate to replace Mauricio Pochettino, who is under constant pressure, but the former has also already proved successful at Chelsea.

The former PSG boss guided them to a Champions League title in 2021 at the expense of Pep Guardiola's Man City, and it is believed that Tuchel is eyeing a return to England after his Bayern spell ends.

As reported by Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg, Tuchel, who Ben Chilwell called "unbelievable", has Chelsea in his sights despite the unceremonious end to his tenure at Stamford Bridge. Club chiefs sought to replace Tuchel with Graham Potter near the end of 2022, an appointment which proved disastrous.

“It was a kind of shock," said Tuchel on his Chelsea sacking. “I felt it, strangely enough, in the morning when I drove to the training centre that the meeting we would have would be an unusual meeting, and it was a short meeting. It was three to five minutes. I was also not in the mood to talk longer to the decision-makers, I have to say.

“It was a shock for all of us. We had the feeling we were in the right spot at the right time to achieve big things, to build, to stay longer. We had big relationships within the staff. It still hurts in a way to not see these people on a daily basis."

It's interesting that reliable sources indicate that Tuchel would be willing to work under Clearlake Capital again, with Romano now sharing an update of his own.

Fabrizio Romano comments on Tuchel to Chelsea rumours

Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano says a Chelsea return for Tuchel wouldn't be easy due to the soured relationship when the £9m-a-year boss left the first time.

“I’m aware there have also been some reports about Thomas Tuchel potentially looking to return to Chelsea once he leaves his position as Bayern Munich manager at the end of this season," said Romano.

“We know Tuchel will be looking for a new club, but for now I have nothing concrete on a move back to Chelsea. I haven’t heard anything about this and don’t like to guess too much, but what I can say is that for sure it was not an ‘easy’ separation between Tuchel and Chelsea when he left in 2022. So it seems like coming back would also not be easy."

Farcical end to rainy day at Abu Dhabi T10

Players ready on the field but officials still in discussion off it as the game’s cut-off time was reached

Barny Read in Abu Dhabi21-Nov-2019A rain-affected sixth day of the Abu Dhabi T10 ended in farcical fashion as confusion reigned over the specifics of Deccan Gladiators’ shortened chase against Team Abu Dhabi, with players ready on the field but officials still in discussion off it as the game’s cut-off time was reached.Abu Dhabi T10 rules state that a minimum of five overs must be bowled in both innings to constitute a contest. Deccan were 25 for 1 after 2.2 overs when rain stopped play, just 2.4 overs shy of forcing a result. The rain duly cleared with the Abu Dhabi fielders and unbeaten Gladiators pair Mohammad Shahzad and Anton Devcich taking to the field only to be left waiting as discussions continued off the field.*Despite a target of 62 to win from five overs being set – leaving Deccan needing 37 from 16 balls – the 13 minutes that had elapsed with the players in limbo took the game past its 9.59pm local time cut-off.A lack of DLS printouts of projected scores was said to be behind the error but with a revised total confirmed and the Deccan chase reduced to its minimum five overs, there seemed no requirement for target forecasts beyond the final revision. In a statement, the organisers confirmed that “supporting documentation” on the target was not available, leading to the delay.”In the second innings of the Deccan Gladiators vs Team Abu Dhabi match, rain suspended play at 21.30, with covers coming on immediately at Zayed Cricket Stadium,” the statement read. “Match officials confirmed that play would resume at 21.46, with the view to reduce the match to five overs, implementing the DLS.”DLS target discussions continued between team management and match officials as both teams took to the field. Supporting documentation was requested, and this was not immediately available before the scheduled 21.59 match cut-off time. The match referee subsequently decided to abandon the match.”The point apiece leaves Deccan top of the pile on seven points, but it will be a particularly tough result for Abu Dhabi to take. A win would have moved them to five points and as high as third place, within one point of the Gladiators on six, strengthening their grip on the top-four finish required to remain in the competition. But now, and with one game left to play, the UAE capital’s franchise could be out of the competition by the time they take on Karnataka Tuskers in their final outing on Friday.Earlier in the day, a spate of bad weather across the UAE made its way to the capital at the midway stage of the first game as Maratha Arabians and Karnataka was called off before the latter could start their pursuit of 130 for victory. The subsequent match had Bangla Tigers edge out reigning champions Northern Warriors by six runs. The tournament’s organisers have also faced questions over the format, following two tied matches without a tie-breaker such as a Super Over in place.*

Arsenal star who made 169 passes was as good as Odegaard vs Sheffield Utd

The sky is blue, the grass is green and Arsenal have scored four or more in a game again.

It was only a couple of months ago that Mikel Arteta's side were in the midst of a goalscoring crisis, with just a single goal coming from 63 shots at one point.

However, in the intervening months, the Gunners have quickly turned into the most lethal team in the country and, after dispatching Sheffield United 6-0 on Monday night, currently possess a goal difference of plus 45 – the best in the league.

It was the sort of performance in which each and every player could leave the pitch with their heads held high, but there were two in particular who deserved to be singled out for praise, the first of which was the captain.

Martin Odegaard's game in numbers

Yes, Martin Odegaard put in what might be one of his best performances of the season at Bramall Lane last night and was justly rewarded with the Man of the Match award.

The mercurial midfielder was involved in practically every aspect of the game, whether through his silky passing, thunderous shots or tireless pressing. He was everywhere, and the Sheffield United players will be having nightmares for weeks.

The Norwegian's brilliance was recognised by the Standard's Simon Collings' who gave his performance a 9/10 on the night, writing that he 'ran the show in midfield' and that the Blades 'couldn't lay a glove' on him.

It's a very complimentary assessment, but one backed up by the numbers, as in Odegaard's 95 minutes of action, he scored a goal, registered 0.21 expected assists, took a mammoth 115 touches, made four key passes, was accurate in both of his attempted long balls, created one big chance and succeeded in all three of his dribbles.

In all, it was about as close to a perfect game as fans will see from their 25-year-old wizard, and while he fully deserves all the praise he's received, there's another starter who deserves just as much credit.

William Saliba's game in numbers

The other player in question is French international and "Rolls-Royce of a defender", as dubbed by The Athletic's Aaron Catterson-Reid, William Saliba.

Now, from looking at the score alone, fans might assume that the 22-year-old had very little to do on the night, and while that might be somewhat true from a defensive point of view, that doesn't mean that he was just sitting in the Arsenal half twiddling his thumbs all game – far from it.

In fact, when looking at his statistics from the match, it becomes quite clear that he was busy throughout, as in his 95 minutes of action, he took 180 touches, was accurate in 169 of his 174 passes, won two of his three duels, lost possession just six times, made one clearance and one interception.

The standout statistics are the number of touches and passes made by the Bondy-born "monster", as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and while they're impressive in isolation, they are even more remarkable when compared to the historical data.

According to Orbinho, the head of Optajoe, the Frenchman's 169 passes ranks as the most completed by an Arsenal player in Premier League history, surpassing Santi Cazorla, who held the record previously and sitting behind just three Manchester City players for the most passes in a Premier League match ever.

Incredibly, that tally of passes also happened to be more than the entire of the Sheffield United team combined (142) on the night, a stat that truly sums up Arsenal's dominance in Yorkshire.

In all, while it might not look like the former Saint-Étienne man was doing much considering the score, he was very much involved in the game, so Collings' 6/10 rating and assessment that he was 'rarely called upon' doesn't entirely ring true.

Ultimately, Odegaard fully deserves all the praise he received for his unreal performance last night, but Saliba should also get recognition for his contribution with the ball at his feet.
