Elliott and Holland give Victoria chance of remarkable win

Tasmania 220 and 4 for 151 need 87 more runs to beat Victoria 121 and 336 (Elliott 80*, Harper 57, Holland 55, Bird 4-54)Victoria were back in the hunt for their first win of the Sheffield Shield season after a remarkable day-three fightback against Tasmania.Debutant Sam Elliott struck an unbeaten 80 at the MCG on Saturday to help set Tasmania a victory target of 238.The visitors stuttered in response before Ben McDermott (46 not out) and Jake Doran guided them through to stumps.Tasmania are in the stronger position, requiring a further 87 runs for outright victory on Sunday with six wickets remaining, but the match is delicately poised. Will Sutherland made two important breakthroughs for Victoria, removing opener Caleb Jewell and Matthew Wade, who had made a strong start.Fergus O’Neill had Tim Ward caught at first slip and Jon Holland trapped Jordan Silk lbw.Earlier on Saturday, Elliott took a leaf out his famous father’s book with the bat in a superb knock to help lift Victoria to 336 in their second innings. Sam Harper and tailender Holland also hit vital half-centuries in Victoria’s rearguard.Winless Victoria had been staring down the barrel of another defeat when they slumped to 5 for 115 late on day two, having trailed by 99 runs on the first innings. But the 22-year-old son of former Test opener Matthew Elliott came in at No. 9 and combined with Harper in a vital 84-run partnership that extended into day three, turning the match on its head.Elliott and veteran Holland then put on a remarkable 96 for the ninth wicket.Holland’s blistering innings matched his previous best first-class tally as he smashed eight boundaries and a six in just 50 balls.Elliott, who also hit eight boundaries, was on 19 when he survived a huge lbw shout by Jackson Bird. He then frustrated Tasmania’s front-line paceman by nicking the next ball through the slips for four.Peter Siddle did not bowl on Saturday, with ex-Australian captain Tim Paine fielding as the substitute.

Nurul Hasan promises 'fearless cricket' and a 'team-first culture'

Bangladesh’s new T20I captain Nurul Hasan wants his side to play “fearless cricket” in Zimbabwe in the three-match series next week. In his first press conference as captain, Nurul offered a glimpse into his thinking as he fended off tough questions about a struggling team and his own performance in the format.BCB named Nurul captain for only their next three T20I games, replacing Mahmudullah who had been in charge since 2019. But it is a major concern that Bangladesh have won only one of their last 13 T20Is, and have stagnated in the format. It is widely believed that Nurul is a stopgap option before Shakib Al Hasan, who has been rested from the Zimbabwe tour, takes over for the Asia Cup next month.Related

  • Fractured finger puts Bangladesh captain Nurul Hasan out of remainder of Zimbabwe tour

  • Nurul might only be a stop-gap arrangement

  • Nurul replaces Mahmudullah as T20I captain

But Nurul is to be taken seriously. He is known for his shy demeanor off the field and his aggression on it. For a cricketer who only returned to the T20I setup in Bangladesh’s most recent series, it is a big ask to lead a side that has so much expectation riding on it. He said that the characteristic of not being too excitable will be handy for him as captain.”It is important to play fearless cricket,” Nurul said. “It creates more opportunity. We want to stick to our process too but we can’t plan too far ahead. Captaincy is definitely a matter of pride but I am thinking more about the challenge ahead. At every level I have led teams, I tried to [get the players to] play as a team. I want to continue that team-first culture.”I have very little expectation and excitement in my life. I don’t worry too much about results or the past. These things don’t really matter to me. I have been successfully doing this for a long time.”Nurul said he would take the best bits of what he has learned from the previous leaders, but believes that captains differ vastly. “I have learned a lot playing under [Mahmudullah] Riyad ,” he said. “I have learned from all our captains, all of whom are quite different. I want to work by taking something from each of those experiences.”The team culture has improved in the last two years under the senior players. We have to continue on that. You can’t mention the contribution of our senior cricketers in one or two words. They have brought Bangladesh cricket to a level, so now our job is to take it forward.”Nurul’s T20I record with the bat is modest – 271 runs at an average of 12.90 and a strike rate of 111.98, with a top score of 30 not out from 29 innings – but he felt those numbers didn’t reflect the extent of his contributions.”The type of batting I do, it creates more impact than what my score often suggests.” he said. “I might score 15-20 runs but it has a direct consequence for the team. I will try to continue in that vein.”Meanwhile, the man widely tipped to take over from Nurul after the Zimbabwe tour endorsed the new captain. “I think he is a worthy captain,” Shakib said. “BCB also feels he can contribute to Bangladesh’s future, which is why they made him the captain. I wish him well. I hope he can overcome the challenge in Zimbabwe.”

Rayados is experiencing tense moments after it was confirmed that during Thursday's training session, Monterrey midfielder Sergio Canales and coach Martín Demichelis had a heated argument at the end of practice. The Argentine coach criticized the team's star for his lack of movement and tactical aspects.

Sources reported that the former Real Madrid player took off his training bib and walked away, kicking and breaking a glass door, which resulted in a leg injury. The club later confirmed his injury.

After training, Demichelis acknowledged the argument but downplayed the incident:

"You can give it whatever title you want. We allow players to express their opinions, and in every team, every sport, every locker room, there are always exchanges of views. I like to give my opinion, and I like players to share theirs so we can reach the best conclusions and grow… I respect all opinions," he said.

The Rayados locker room could be fractured following the altercation between Demichelis and Canales. It remains uncertain whether the Spanish midfielder, who received 10 stitches on his leg, will be available for Saturday’s Matchday 14 clash against Chivas in the Clausura 2025.

Julen Lopetegui’s name has emerged as a potential replacement for Demichelis, who has failed to meet expectations since taking over from Fernando Ortiz last season. La Pandilla was eliminated in the Round of 16 of the Champions Cup and currently sits in ninth place in the Clausura 2025 standings.

"Sergio Canales received medical attention for injuries on his left leg after breaking a glass door when entering the locker room following practice at the El Barrial Training Center." the club said in a statement. "The player rested for the remainder of the day. The medical staff will closely monitor Sergio to assess his recovery and his availability for the match on Saturday, April 5."

James Anderson makes his point, but Harry Brook thwarts Lancashire victory push

Rather like Britt in , world-class sportspeople compete with themselves. Victories matter, of course; trophies matter, too; and yes, money matters, for they all know there must come a life after sport. But overarching all these things there is a private battle, one that is not always acknowledged, to satisfy a personal demand for excellence, even if one’s performance already soars far above one’s contemporaries. This afternoon, in a drawn Roses match at Headingley, James Anderson revealed something of the fires that drive him on, even at the age of 39, when most cricketers are merely talking about their careers or telling others how to do it.In team games it is impossible to satisfy those personal demands if one is not selected. However, for most sportspeople the diminution in one’s contribution to the collective effort is obvious some time before the axe falls. Anderson, though, clearly believes he was nowhere near that chastening realisation when he was recently omitted from the England party to tour West Indies, and this match against Yorkshire has given him opportunities to prove his point to Joe Root, the man who was at least complicit in the decision to leave him at home. The last such opportunity arrived shortly after lunch on this last day of a match Lancashire dominated. Despite Root’s very fine 147 in Yorkshire’s first innings, the home side had been made to follow on 187 runs behind and their second effort had begun badly. Just as he had been in the first innings, Adam Lyth was leg before to an in-ducker from Tom Bailey; the only difference this time was that Lyth was playing a shot of sorts. The hour’s cricket that followed was intense. Bailey and Anderson strove to make the breakthroughs their team needed but were resisted by George Hill and Dawid Malan. Runs were, for the moment, secondary to survival on a day when Yorkshire effectively needed to bat out the best part of three sessions if they were to avoid defeat. About twenty minutes before lunch Vilas made a double change and the tension slackened slightly. Yorkshire ended the first session on 39 for one after 17 overs; it felt like an achievement. It was also temporary. Anderson returned to the attack from the Howard Stand End immediately after lunch and beat Malan twice in four balls. The fifth brought the batter forward and induced the edge to Phil Salt – or so Mark Saggers adjudged. Malan’s plainly dissenting opinion was of no consequence. Anderson celebrated with his colleagues and then went back to his mark to bowl at the former captain of England. That private-public duel lasted ten balls. The first was well defended, the fifth beat Root all ends up and the ninth was skilfully guided without risk to the third man boundary. The tenth was as quick as the others, which is to say around 80mph. It kept a little low but crucially it nipped back though a gate that was closed all too late. It crashed into the middle and off stumps and flattened them.Anderson held his right arm aloft, leapt in triumph and then clenched his fists at his side in a manner that brings delight to the Barmy Army. Revenge? I think not. Point made? Oh, certainly. For there was a momentary glance towards the departing Root. There were, so far as we could gather, no words. But then Anderson’s bowling possesses eloquence beyond language. Watch him closely again, in the flesh if you can, and see for yourself. He has been among the glories of our sporting age.The remainder of Anderson’s second six-over spell of the day was similarly accurate but threatening deliveries were well defended by Hill and Harry Brook. England’s finest bowler came off with figures of 12-6-11-2. They are par for that particular course. They may even have satisfied him.Lancashire made only one more breakthrough in the afternoon session, Hill falling to a short ball once again, when his very limp pull shot to a ball from Luke Wood merely edged a catch to Salt. Anderson returned for three overs before tea and had Harry Brook dropped on 30 by Wood at square leg. It proved a vital miss. Shortly after tea, Brook reached his seventh half-century in eight first-class innings this season. In the evening session he watched from the other end as Harry Duke was brilliantly caught by Luke Wells at slip and Dom Bess was snaffled by Jennings at short leg. Both these wickets were taken by Matt Parkinson, for whom this was an excellent all-round match. But Brook is quite clearly a young batsman of high calibre. When the draw was agreed with seven overs left to be bowled, he was unbeaten on 82 and his aggregate for the season is currently 758 at an average of 151.6. But what one notices is the time he has in which to play his shots and the ease with which he does so. There is, surely, every chance that he will play his first Test against New Zealand. James Anderson, meanwhile, will be playing his 170th. The England cap will be back where it belongs.

European winner and 4-2-3-1 specialist both eyeing Leicester manager job

Two managers who are both known as 4-2-3-1 specialists are interested in replacing Steve Cooper at Leicester City should he be sacked, according to a new report. The Foxes have made a frustrating start to life back in the Premier League, and defeat to Manchester United on Sunday put them within three points of the relegation zone once again.

Leicester interested in versatile attacking "machine" likened to Luis Diaz

Leicester are among the clubs keeping an eye on an exciting player who could be made available for a loan.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 7, 2024 Pressure mounting on Steve Cooper at Leicester

Leicester’s 3-0 defeat to United on Sunday means it is just two wins from their 11 league games this season, and it is now just one point from their last three games. After the game, Cooper stated that his team has got to do more to stop leaking goals: “There’s nothing good about a 3-0 defeat, and we’ve not done enough to stop their goals. We got into more than enough positions to threaten United’s box, but as a team we didn’t show enough.

“In large parts the game seemed even, but in certain moments we’ve not done enough at both ends of the pitch. We’re not going to hide away from the chances and goals we’re conceding, and we’ll keep showing intent to improve that.

“We know we have creativity and threat in the team, but we didn’t maximise that. Whether it was a mixture of United being really ruthless stopping us, whether we could’ve made better decisions or shown more quality – it could be all of those things.”

It was reported last month that Cooper’s future as Leicester manager was far from secure, as its been a frustrating start to the campaign for the Foxes. The club’s hierarchy is said to be aware of supporters being frustrated with the manager, and at the time he had to beat Southampton to keep his job.

It has since been revealed that a defeat to Ipswich last week could have cost him his job too, so it seems the board are not going to hang around for a second if their form dips too far.

4-2-3-1 specialists are both interested in replacing Cooper at Leicester

According to Football Insider, both Graham Potter and David Moyes are interested in taking over from Steve Cooper at Leicester City.

Graham Potter as Chelsea manager

Cooper took charge of Leicester in the summer after Enzo Maresca left to take over at Chelsea, and so far, the 44-year-old has won two league games, and they came in back-to-back matches against Bournemouth and Southampton last month. Three defeats in their last four games has put Cooper under pressure, so much so that managers are now waiting in the wings.

West Ham United manager David Moyes

Potter, who loves to play with a possession based 4-2-3-1 formation, and Moyes, who deployed a more defensive version of the same system to win the UEFA Conference League with West Ham, are interested in taking over at Leicester, as the ambition and structure of the club make it an “attractive prospect”.

Both managers are currently out of work; Potter has been since leaving Chelsea in 2023, and Moyes has been since leaving the Hammers at the end of last season. This report adds that the owners are said to be willing to back a new manager and help the club as much as they can to survive in the Premier League.
