Arsenal now monitoring "exciting" Swede; summer transfer possible for £50m+

Arsenal are now “monitoring” an “exciting” midfielder, with a summer transfer possible if they are willing to pay at least £50m, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Gunners keen on a midfielder

The Gunners are well-known to be interested in signing a midfielder this summer, having been pursuing Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi for quite some time, but there is growing uncertainty that a deal for the Spaniard will be possible.

As such, while Mikel Arteta is still hoping to get a deal for Zubimendi over the line, alternative targets are being identified, with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Pablo Barrios now being plotted.

The north Londoners are also in the race for Rosenborg youngster Sverre Nypan, who is considered a key signing for Arteta’s future project, but there will be competition from Liverpool, while Manchester City are also known to be interested.

Not only will Arsenal have to do battle with Liverpool if they decide to pursue Nypan, but they are also battling the Reds for Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson, according to a recent update from Plettenberg on X.

Tottenham Hotspur and several other teams, including the top Bundesliga clubs, are also “monitoring” Larsson, with a summer move deemed a possibility, should any potential suitor be willing to fork out a big fee.

Eintracht Frankfurt'sHugoLarssonin action with Viktoria Plzen's Pavel Sulc

The German club are hoping to receive at least €60m (£50m) for the midfielder, and they are seemingly in a strong negotiating position, given that he remains contracted until the summer of 2029.

Frankfurt are expecting “concrete offers” for the 20-year-old in the summer, but it remains to be seen whether the Gunners are willing to make a bid.

"Exciting" Larsson impressing for Frankfurt

Although the Swedish maestro is still very young, he has already received eight caps for his country, having impressed at club level, establishing himself as a key player for Frankfurt since making the move from Malmo FF.

Prior to his arrival in Germany, the former Malmo man was lauded as “one of the most exciting talents in Swedish football” by freelance scout Ben Mattinson, and he has certainly lived up to the hype thus far.

The starlet has made 33 appearances in all competitions this term, and he has been on the scoresheet five times, scoring an unconventional goal with his knee to mark his 50th Bundesliga outing last month, during Frankfurt’s 3-1 victory over Holstein Kiel.

Having proven himself in the Bundesliga over the past two seasons, Larsson could be ready to take the next step in his career by signing for one of the Premier League’s top clubs, so it is exciting news Arsenal could be in the race for his signature this summer.

Aston Villa could be without 11-goal star alongside Mings vs Crystal Palace

As Aston Villa look to make it five games without defeat in all competitions, they may be forced to do so without both Tyrone Mings and another one of Unai Emery’s key men against Crystal Palace.

Aston Villa injury news

The Villans’ injury concerns have gone under the radar ever so slightly in recent weeks. At various points they’ve been without Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa and remain without Ross Barkley, Pau Torres and Amadou Onana. Emery has coped nonetheless, however, and watched on as his side came from behind to defeat Chelsea late on last time out.

With January arrivals Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio combining for both goals, Aston Villa’s recruitment has seemingly come good at the perfect time once again as they look to push on towards Champions League qualification.

As things stand, those in the Midlands sit just two points adrift of fourth-place Manchester City, albeit having played a game extra than the Blues. It’s certainly a tight battle, and one which could take another twist when they travel to face an in-form Crystal Palace this evening potentially without two key men.

As revealed by Emery, Aston Villa could now be without Morgan Rogers against Crystal Palace as well as Mings in what would be two frustrating injury blows for the Villans.

Emery must axe Ramsey to unleash Aston Villa's next Morgan Rogers

Unai Emery will look to throw this Aston Villa ace into his starting XI tonight.

ByKelan Sarson Feb 25, 2025

Emery told reporters when quizzed on Rodgers’ availability after he limped off against Chelsea: “His wish is always to play even when he was telling me on Saturday he was good. He was telling me he could continue.

“He is important. The idea is to have substitutes performing well. One of them is Rogers. In case he is not available, we can use other players.”

Also asked about his defensive options, the Spaniard provided an update on Axel Disasi, Torres and Mings – telling reporters: “Axel Disasi can play tomorrow. Mings, we will see how he feels. Konsa feels good and Pau is close to adding to us, maybe this week or next week.”

"Fantastic" Rogers is growing in importance

The jury was still out on Rogers when he first arrived from Middlesbrough in January of 2024, but the midfielder has proved any doubters wrong ever since to become one of Emery’s most important players. A driving force behind everything good that this Aston Villa side do, it’s no surprise that the former Manchester City academy man has earned such high praise.

After watching the 22-year-old score a hat-trick in the Champions League against Celtic, former Aston Villa star Stiliyan Petrov told TNT Sports: “He looked like he is going to be a star. He could have scored another two.

“In the second half, Brendan Rodgers changed the tactics a little bit, he put two players to man mark Rogers, and he has just managed to adapt, to move to a different position and find space so he can score goals. He was absolutely fantastic.”

With 11 goals to his name in all competitions so far this season, Rogers’ absence would certainly deal Aston Villa a major blow if he fails to win the race to be fit ahead of his side’s trip to Selhurst Park.

Arsenal now "most likely" team to sign £33m forward, Arteta loves his pace

Arsenal are now believed to be the favourites to sign a forward who Mikel Arteta idolises for his speed, with the Gunners expected to have a busy summer after failing to make a single new signing in the January transfer window.

Arsenal set for "big summer" after uneventful January

Their 2-0 loss to Newcastle earlier this week, not to mention injuries to Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, highlight the need for Arteta’s side to acquire more options for the final third ahead of next season.

While their January was mostly uneventful, despite a widely reported Arsenal bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, reliable journalist Charles Watts expects the club to have a “big summer” as they look to mount another Premier League title challenge next campaign.

However, the journalist also sends a word of caution, with a lot of Arteta’s preferred targets potentially very hard to obtain.

“Alexander Isak may well be first choice in Mikel Arteta’s mind. But that would be an incredibly difficult deal to get done given the sort of fee it would take to tempt Newcastle into doing business,” said Watts.

“Benjamin Sesko – another long-term target – is far more gettable and there is a relationship already there, with the player and his representatives and with RB Leipzig as well.

“But there will be rival interest in the Slovenia international. So it’s not a foregone conclusion that Arsenal will land him if they do firm up their interest once again. The same could be said for Nico Williams, who is another player Arteta would love to sign, but one who several clubs will be in the mix for come the summer.

“So, whilst I do believe it will be a big summer for Arsenal in the transfer market and that the club will look to be aggressive, it will not be easy given the competition they will face for their top targets.”

Now, according to a report from Spain, Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi has emerged as a potentially astute option.

Arsenal are now the "most likely" team to sign Karim Adeyemi

Indeed, it is believed that Arteta is a real fan of the forward’s pace, balance and proficiency in front of goal – so much so that Arsenal are now the “most likely” team to sign Adeyemi this summer.

The north Londoners are prepared to make a concerted effort to seal a deal for the German, who could cost around £33 million, which is the price Napoli apparently agreed for his signature in January before the move fell through.

Adeyemi, meanwhile, is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League. Interestingly, he’s also drawn past comparisons to footballing icon Lionel Messi.

“You know who he reminds me of, in his movements?,” said former Poland international Janusz Gora in an interview with The Athletic. “Lionel Messi. The way he glides inside from the right onto his strong left foot with quick little turns.”

Not just Saliba: 5/10 star has cost Arsenal the chance of winning a trophy

Prior to the second leg of their League Cup semi-final last night, there was a real sense of optimism around what the end of the season could look like for Arsenal.

However, since the full-time whistle was blown at St James’ Park, any such positive feelings have all but dissipated, only to be replaced by the same frustration that has lingered for much of the campaign.

While they had some chances very early on, Mikel Arteta’s side put in what might have been one of their worst performances of the season against Newcastle United and were punished for it.

There were frankly dire displays across the pitch for the Gunners, but two players really stood out, and one of them was centre-back extraordinaire William Saliba.

Saliba's poor performance against Newcastle

Now, it should be said that while some other players in this Arsenal team have been subpar for much of the campaign this year, Saliba really hasn’t.

Has he been at his exceptional best? No, but he has still been putting in quality showings on a regular basis for the Gunners, which is what makes his performance last night all the more shocking.

The usually unflappable Frenchman looked like he was lost at sea for much of the game, being toyed with by Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, who seem to have his number this season.

It might sound harsh, but it’s not just us who thought the 23-year-old was poor, as football.london’s Tom Canton gave him a 4/10 match rating, while The Athletic’s Aaron Catterson-Reid justifiably described it as his “worst performance in an Arsenal shirt.”

On top of looking unable to stop the Toon’s attacking trio, the 6 foot 3 defender was also unable to keep hold of the ball for his team, losing possession 11 times, losing 100% of his ground duels and completing just 82% of his passes, which for him, is uncharacteristically low.

In short, it was a nightmare performance from Saliba, but he wasn’t the only Arsenal star to have a shocker, as club captain Martin Odegaard was just as poor.

Odegaard's performance in numbers against Newcastle

Yes, unfortunately for Arteta, last night’s game was another in which his mercurial captain failed to step up this season.

It’s been a rough campaign for the former wonderkid, as since he returned from his ankle injury in November, he has been a shadow of the midfielder who scored 15 goals two years ago and was named the club’s Player of the Year for the second season running last year.

So far this season, the Drammen-born maestro has only racked up three goals and six assists in 25 appearances, and last night was yet another game in which he failed to add to his tally.

He had a golden opportunity to open the scoring and give the North Londoners a lifeline in the tie just 18 minutes in, but missed, and then less than a minute later, Jacob Murphy made sure he didn’t miss his chance at the other end.

However, it wasn’t just the 26-year-old’s lack of finishing that was the problem last night, as, like Saliba, he looked lost at sea, was unable to impact the game in any meaningful way and fully deserved the 5/10 match rating he received from Tom Canton.

In fact, his performance was such an unmitigated “train wreck,” per content creator Connor Humm, that Arteta decided to take him off in the 61st minute, and while that sounds harsh, it’s an opinion supported by his statistics.

For example, in his 61 minutes of action, the former Real Madrid prospect failed to take a single shot on target, misplaced 75% of his crosses, didn’t even attempt a dribble, lost 50% of his ground duels, lost the ball six times and played just one key pass, despite taking 44 touches.

Ultimately, Odegaard has shown over the last couple of seasons that he is an incredible footballer, but this year, and particularly in last night’s game, he’s been a shadow of his former self, and it’s a problem for Arsenal.

David Willey's experience tells for England as he finds his love of the game again

Starring role on third anniversary of World Cup final, for player who missed the 2019 cut

It was oddly apt that, on the anniversary of England’s World Cup victory at Lord’s, the key protagonists in a series-levelling win over India were three players whose memories of that day – for differing reasons – were bound to be less euphoric than those of their team-mates.There was the Player of the Match, Reece Topley, of course – whose career resurrection has been an extraordinary tale of perseverance – and England’s top-scorer Moeen Ali, whose form in 2019 dwindled to the point that he carried the drinks for the final four matches of the tournament. But then there was David Willey, whose World Cup experience was perhaps the most galling of them all. Having been an integral squad member right from the start of England’s white-ball rebuild in 2015, he was chopped from the final 15 on the eve of the tournament, in favour of Jofra Archer.”I had a bit of a patch when I didn’t bowl as well around the time of the World Cup,” Willey said after England’s 100-run victory, in which his crucial innings of 41 from 49 balls kickstarted England’s recovery, before figures of 1 for 27 in nine overs helped to strangle India’s intentions in the run chase.”I fell out of love with the game, and I’ve found my enjoyment and love again,” he said. “When you have that, it makes you hungry to keep improving, expanding your game, developing as a player. If you stand still you go backwards. I think I have continued to try to improve and my love for the game helps that.”As Willey told Sky Sports after the match, his opportunities to bat in this white-ball line-up are few and far between – he’s made it to the middle in just over half of his England appearances (53 out of 91), and on 32 of those occasions, he’s faced fewer than ten deliveries. His 49-ball stay at Lord’s was, in fact, the longest of his career – and while there will be more crucial encounters to come than a three-match bilateral series against India, Willey was able to call on all of his experience as he and Moeen set about rescuing England from a ropey 148 for 6 with a 62-run stand for the seventh wicket.David Willey is pumped after dismissing Virat Kohli•Getty Images

“I am getting old,” Willey said – he is now 32. “I come out and enjoy my cricket, try to do the best job I can. The guys have played a lot of cricket. In ODIs I am more experienced but I’m trying to do the same job as when I first came in. Today was about doing the simple things well, as a collective we did.”The dressing room is a fantastic place to be. We always talk about the things we do well and how we want to play our cricket, and that was never going to change,” he told Sky Sports. “So it was important that we came out here and put on a good show.”It wasn’t a typical sort of England performance, if you like, but we got across the line, which is important. When this group came together in 2015, we always talked about how we want to play, and that doesn’t change. You know, we trust our method. And that’s why we’ve been so successful. The boys won the World Cup, and that doesn’t change now because we got rolled for 100 last week.”England’s eventual total of 246 wasn’t riches by their heightened standards – it was less than half the 498 for 4 that they put on the board against the Netherlands in Amstelveen last week. But it was similar to 241 that had tied the scores in the World Cup final three years ago, and Willey acknowledged that that sort of a fighting total had been the target from the outset of his stand with Moeen.”It wasn’t the best pitch, but we managed to scrap up to something we could bowl at. In the last 10 ODIs here, the average score batting first here is about 260. We weren’t far off that. Mo and myself said if we could get up to 250 we’d have a chance if we bowled well.Related

“The chat was just about batting, really, to take the runs that come. With a breeze coming to the slightly shorter side [Tavern Stand], I just felt if they did bang in, I was going to have a go at it and try and take my runs there. We got up to a competitive score there and managed to bowl well.”There was assistance there, we had to do the simple things well,” he added. “We knew we had to bowl good balls, and Toppers had a great day out there, picked up six-for, congratulations to him. I was just trying to keep it tight and go nowhere and hopefully get the rewards. Picking up the early poles, then the lads coming in and backing it up, was a really good performance all round.”Speaking after the match, Willey admitted that he had “no idea” whether he would be released to play for Yorkshire in Finals Day on Saturday – but, with the ODI series now in the balance at 1-1 and the final match at Old Trafford looming on Sunday, the ECB has since confirmed he will not be taking part. That means he may already have played his final game for his county, with his move back to Northamptonshire looming at the end of the season.”If I am there, great; if I’m not, there is plenty of talent and ability in the Yorkshire side to get us across the line,” Willey had said. His Yorkshire team-mate Harry Brook will be available to play in the semi-final against Roses rivals Lancashire, for whom Phil Salt and Matt Parkinson have also been released by England.

Talks progressing as club confident to sign £50k-p/w Fulham ace in January

Fulham are now getting closer to losing a member of Marco Silva’s squad this January, according to one report, as discussions progress over a potential sale.

Fulham flying high

Fulham are enjoying an excellent campaign under Silva, with the Cottagers going to start 2025 in the top half of the Premier League, and they could yet threaten the European places come the end of the campaign.

The west London side have recovered from losing both Joao Palhinha and Tosin in the summer transfer window, adding quality across the board to improve their squad despite such major players departing.

Fulham now keen to sign "special" Man City star ready to leave in January

He’s a man in demand…

ByTom Cunningham Dec 28, 2024

Silva had nothing but praise for his summer signings after the win over Chelsea, a result that made it 10 London derbies unbeaten for Fulham. “The players who have come in have settled really well and the help from the players that we already had was big for them”, the Portuguese coach explained.

“The progression has been really great from ourselves. The way we are responding.”

Now though, that good feeling around Craven Cottage could come crashing down midseason.

Fulham in danger of losing star creator

That comes as reports in Brazil, relayed by Sport Witness, claim that Palmeiras are progressing in talks over a move to sign Brazilian midfielder Andreas Pereira in the winter window.

The Fulham man has been long-linked with a move away, and quizzed on his future Silva refused to rule out a sale, though he stressed his importance to Fulham.

Andreas Pereira for Fulham.

“He’s very important for us, I won’t hide it. He’s a different player, a player who gives us other things”, he explained, before adding “this Palmeiras thing isn’t for a conversation between me and him.”

Indeed, Andreas is the key creator for Silva’s side, with no other player in the Cottagers squad, with only Alex Iwobi providing more shot creating actions than the Brazilian, while only Tom Cairney and Reiss Nelson average more per 90 minutes (having played more than one game).

It had been reported last week that Palmeiras had tabled a £16m bid for the midfielder, and that they were willing to increase that to almost £18m to get a deal done.

Now, the player who Silva has previously hailed as “outstanding” is reportedly closer than ever to an exit, with fresh reports claiming that “Palmeiras president Leila Pereira is ‘confident of the deal’” and that ‘negotiations [are] progressing’, albeit slowly.

It is added that there is no agreement yet between the two sides, but that Palmeiras are “optimistic of getting this operation over the line in the upcoming window”.

Any departure would come as a major blow to the Cottagers, who have a chance at European football next season on current form. However, given Pereira’s outspoken desire to leave in the future, combined with his current £50,000-a-week deal coming to an end in 2026 and Fulham’s recent history of replacing their key men and still growing, a sale may well be the best outcome for the long term future of the club.
