Vinay Kumar five-for routs Vidarbha

Vinay Kumar returned from injury in style as Karnataka recorded their third successive win this season

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Nov-2016Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar capped his return from injury with a second-innings half-century and five-wicket haul that sent Vidarbha crashing to a 189-run loss inside three days in Vadodara. The win took Karnataka to their third victory in four games, thereby topping Group B at the season’s halfway mark.On a 17-wicket day in 71 overs, Karnataka first crumbled from 108 for 3 to 209 all out. Set 301 for victory, Vidarbha were skittled for 111, with Vinay returning 5 for 28.Left-arm pacer Shrikant Wagh (4 for 59) and Lalit Yadav ripped through Karnataka’s lower middle-order, before Vinay rescued them with 56 from No. 8. He hit eight fours along the way to build the lead. After top-scoring with the bat, Vinay returned to lead the bowling charge, by picking three of the first four wickets; Vidarbha slumped to 12 for 4 at one stage. Jitesh Sharma counter-attacked to make 61, before S Aravind and K Gowtham dismissed the tailenders to finish off the innings inside 37 overs.Saurashtra dismissed Assam for 171 in Kolkata with Jaydev Unadkat taking six wickets, but not before Assam took a first-innings lead of 18.Saurashtra started the day on 121 for 9 with Unadkat and Shaurya Sanandia adding 32 runs in the morning for a cumulative partnership of 46 runs for the final wicket – their highest in the innings. Unadkat’s 46 helped creep their score up to 153 before Sanadia was dismissed by Dhiraj Goswami. In the reply, Assam lost their first wicket in their second over and Unadkat’s double-strike in overs 13 and 15 saw them stranded at 26 for 3. But a 52-run partnership between Arun Karthik and Swarupam Purkayastha for the sixth-wicket took them close to Saurashtra’s score, before the former was dismissed for 57. Purkayastha was out the following over and then Unadkat and Jadeja cleaned up the tail to constrict Assam to a slender lead.Saurashtra lost opener Avi Barot to Arup Das – his eighth scalp of the match – as they ended on 0 for the loss of one wicket at stumps.Opener Ranjit Singh and Subhranshu Senapati helped Odisha to 244 for 2 after following-on against Rajasthan in Patiala. Their unbeaten partnership of 159 runs in 56.3 overs gave Odisha a 93-run lead before final day’s play.Beginning the day on 143 for 8 in their first innings, Odisha fell short of avoiding follow-on by one run as Pankaj Singh picked up the last two wickets to finish with 4 for 61 as they were all out for 172, chasing 343.Odisha batted better in their second innings; opener Sandeep Pattnaik scored a 32-ball 40 before his partner Singh and Senapati – both of whom remained not out on 89 and 90 – steered Odisha to a significant lead while playing out the seven Rajasthan bowlers used in the innings.Unmukt Chand reached his century and followed that up with another half-century as Delhi reached 165 for 1 in their second-innings at stumps against Jharkhand in Thumba after being asked to follow on.Starting the day on 225 for 3, Chand and overnight centurion Rishabh Pant added 36 runs more before the latter was removed by Ashish Kumar. Chand fell one run later, but not before he had completed his eighth first-class ton earlier in the day. The last five Delhi wickets could add only 72 more runs as they were dismissed for 334, trailing by 159. Kumar and offbreak bowler Sunny Gupta returned with three wickets each.In their second innings, Chand put on 109-runs with fellow-opener Dhruv Shorey before Gupta dismissed him for 63. Shorey continued, to post his third first-class fifty, and ended not out on 67 with Nitish Rana, at stumps with Delhi on 165 for 1, leading by six runs. * The report erroneously mentioned Karnataka had beaten Baroda. This has been corrected.

Rangers Considering Swoop To Sign £10m Marksman

An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their plans to bolster their attacking options in the upcoming summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Anastasios Douvikas to Rangers?

According to TEAMtalk, Gers boss Michael Beale could launch a swoop to sign Greek international centre-forward Anastasios Douvikas from FC Utrecht ahead of next season.

The report claims that the Light Blues are eyeing up the Eredivisie striker and that they could be competing with Scottish rivals Celtic to land his signature, with the Hoops having also been touted with an interest in the ace.

Earlier this month, Utrecht technical director Jordy Zuidam claimed that the Dutch club are looking for a fee in the region of €12m (£10m) before they will cash in on their top players, with the marksman being named as one of their biggest assets.

How has Anastasios Douvikas performed this season?

The 23-year-old centre-forward has been in prolific form in the Eredivisie in 2022/23 and the no.9 could come in as a big upgrade on current Gers striker Kemar Roofe.

Glasgow Rangers forward Kemar Roofe.

Beale, in March, confirmed that the Jamaican attacker will miss the rest of the campaign through injury and this means that the dud will end the season with just three appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

He has only played 24 games in the division since the start of last term and this shows that the ex-Leeds poacher is rarely available for selection, with injuries plaguing the dynamo.

Roofe racked up 11 goals – scoring every 2.18 outings – and one assist in that time and that is a decent return in front of goal but Douvikas could come in and offer far more reliability in his availability whilst also being able to provide a greater threat in the final third.

The Greek international, who is also seven years younger than the Gers man, has played 65 Eredivisie games since the start of last season and has plundered 18 goals and four assists in 31 matches in the current campaign – a strike every 1.72 clashes.

This shows that the 23-year-old is more durable, based on his vastly superior appearance record, and has the potential to score goals more frequently than the Light Blues liability.

Douvikas, who was hailed as "sharp" by journalist Josh Bunting, has created seven 'big chances' for his teammates in 22/23 and Roofe has provided his fellow Rangers players with four in the last three years combined, which suggests that the Utrecht star would offer far more creativity from the number nine position by providing others with opportunities to score on a regular basis.

Therefore, Beale could land a big upgrade on the ex-Anderlecht striker by beating Celtic to the signing of the Eredivisie titan in the summer transfer window.

The latest finish also involved West Indies, when they beat England in the final of the Champions Trophy on September 25, 2004.England men’s summer will be launched by a two-match ODI series against Ireland, at Bristol and Lord’s on May 5 and 7, before the arrival of South Africa’s ODI squad for three matches – at Headingley, Ageas Bowl and Lord’s – on May 24, 27 and 29, which will serve as warm-up fixtures for the Champions Trophy, which opens with England’s match against Bangladesh at the Kia Oval on June 1.

Further matches are scheduled for Headingley and Lord’s, before a one-off T20I followed by five ODIs, with the home summer set to finish at the Ageas Bowl on September 29.”With three different international teams coming here next summer and this country playing host to two major ICC global events – the ICC Champions Trophy and the ICC Women’s World Cup – there will be a feast of international cricket to excite us in England and Wales,” said Tom Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive.”Both the international and the domestic schedule will have a different shape to previous years. And the early season block for the Royal London One-Day Cup – with a new mid-season date for its Lord’s final – will support both England’s ICC Champions Trophy preparations and our longer term planning for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019. It will also allow players to focus skills on the white ball game and help more people to understand the structure of the season.”It promises to be a memorable summer of cricket for all our international grounds and a particularly special one for Somerset CCC which will host its first England men’s fixture for more than thirty years; a great opportunity for the county to further capitalise on its strong support for England women’s cricket in recent years.”Edgbaston will once again host NatWest T20 Blast Finals day while the Royal London One-Day Cup Final has been brought forward from its traditional mid-September date to a new mid-summer slot in early July.

MUFC Takeover: Glazers Dealing With Internal Conflict

Joel and Avram Glazer are the only two of the six siblings who aren't fully behind a total takeover of Manchester United, according to journalist Alex Crook.

Are the Glazers selling Man Utd?

The Red Devils are enjoying a good season on the pitch, with a chance of winning three trophies realistically still on offer currently, but there is plenty of drama off the field. In recent weeks, reports have been dominated by talk of a takeover at Old Trafford, with the Glazers potentially selling up.

Both Sheikh Jassim Bin Al Thani in Qatar and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are believed to have tabled £5bn bids for United but have been thwarted in their efforts to date, with the current owners holding firm with a price tag of £6bn.

What's going on with Joel and Avram Glazer?

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday, Crook provided the latest on the matter, saying the last week was "chaos" with the changing bid deadlines, but also revealing something new – Joel and Avram Glazer have a different stance to the rest of the family:

“I think it remains to be seen if the Glazers remain committed to a full takeover of the football club, I’m not sure they are. Joel and Avram Glazer, the two who are the focal point, I think their preferred option is minority investment.

"We know the Elliott Group are willing to come in and provide funds for a small investment. Joel and Avram, their main focus appears to be raising some funds for a partial buyout than sell the whole football club. The sticking point is there are six siblings who have shares in the football club, the other four all want to go through with a 100 per cent sale.

“It’s still all up in the air, will there be a third round of bids? Will there be a period of exclusivity either for Sheikh Jassim or Sir Jim Ratcliffe? At this stage that looks unlikely, but we need some answers soon.”

This is an interesting update and does perhaps go to show why things are moving so slowly regarding the potential takeover of United. It looks as though the Glazer family still can't come to an agreement, and should that continue to be the case, it is hard to see anything changing soon.

Red Devils supporters would of course prefer to see all involvement regarding the Glazers completely disappear, in order to bring in a complete new era at the club and get rid of owners who have largely proved to be unpopular overall.

Arsenal considering approach for David

Arsenal are considering an approach to bring Lille striker Jonathan David to the Premier League ahead of the 2023/24 season, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Long-term admirers

In Gabriel Jesus’s absence, Mikel Arteta was mostly playing Eddie Nketiah up top before the arrival of Leandro Trossard, but the boss could still do with securing another senior attacking reinforcement during the upcoming summer window.

TEAMtalk claim that the Gunners are long-term admirers of the 23-year-old with sporting director Edu having had him firmly on his radar for the past three years.

During an interview in December, the Canadian forward admitted that he could see himself making the transition to the top flight at some point in the near future. He said:

“In England, when I watch the matches, everything is full each time. As a player, it motivates you even more.

“I don’t know, I think it’s possible, very possible. I don’t know if I can find myself anywhere other than the Premier League. It could well be the Premier League. It’s a very nice atmosphere.”

The Latest: Arsenal monitoring David

According to Spanish reports (via CaughtOffside), Arsenal are ‘looking at’ and ‘planning a summer transfer window move’ for David.

The Canada international would reportedly give the Gunners a ‘different dimension’ in attack and it sounds like the hierarchy are willing to do whatever it takes to secure their target.

Edu could be willing to ‘part ways’ with the promising young duo of Nketiah and Folarin Balogun in order to fund the deal and make space for a new arrival in the final third.

The Verdict: Absolute bargain

Lille are expected to require a fee of approximately €50m (£44m) to sanction David’s sale and Arsenal would be getting an absolute bargain should they successfully be able to acquire his services for that price in the summer.

The Adidas-sponsored talisman has been on fire so far this season, scoring 19 goals and providing four assists in 26 Ligue 1 appearances, where he’s currently averaging 3.2 shots per game.

The Brooklyn native would be bringing excellent flexibility to the squad at the Emirates Stadium having operated in five various positions since the start of his career, including out wide on both the left and right flanks alongside his natural role.

David has been dubbed a ‘shining light’ at Lille by journalist Josh Bunting and a ‘phenomenon’ by Belgian manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck – there’s no question that the two-footed ace would have a hugely positive impact should he make the switch to N7.

Spurs struck gold by signing Kyle Walker

Tottenham Hotspur sporting director Fabio Paratici dipped into the market to bolster Antonio Conte’s squad during the January transfer window.

The Italian chief brought in Pedro Porro and Arnaut Danjuma to improve the side, with the former coming in to compete with Emerson Royal for a place at wing-back.

However, the Spaniard has been unable to force his way into the side as the Brazilian defender has recorded a Sofascore rating of 6.8 or higher in the Premier League and Champions League in his last five starts – scoring twice in that time.

They are both vying to be the club’s undisputed, long-term, right-back option and it is a position that has been up for grabs for a number of years since Kyle Walker’s departure.

How did Kyle Walker perform at Tottenham?

The England international, who was hailed as “exceptional” for his country by journalist Ryan Taylor, was a terrific servant for Spurs as he made 229 appearances for the club in all competitions before his move to Manchester City in 2017.

Daniel Levy struck gold for Tottenham by signing the full-back from Sheffield United in the summer of 2009, which was a double deal for him and Kyle Naughton for a combined fee of £9m.

The gem enjoyed loan spells with Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa before establishing himself as a regular in the team in the 2011/12 campaign – playing 37 times in the Premier League that season.

His impressive performances in the division led to the then-21-year-old winning PFA Young Player of the Year ahead of Danny Welbeck and Sergio Aguero, of Manchester United and Manchester City respectively.

Walker, who ended up scoring four goals and providing 20 assists for Spurs, continued to catch the eye for the club and enjoyed a terrific final campaign in 2016/17. He averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.10 and made 3.4 tackles and interceptions and 1.2 key passes per game – showcasing his quality at both ends of the pitch.

The 73-cap speed demon, who was once revealed to be the fastest player in the Premier League, then completed a move, worth at least £50m, to Manchester City in the summer of 2017, which was a world-record fee for a defender at the time.

This means that Levy made a stunning 456% profit on the initial £9m he paid to sign the full-back from Sheffield United, alongside Naughton, eight years prior to the gem’s switch to Manchester.

Therefore, the Spurs chairman struck gold as the chief picked up a promising young player for a modest fee and turned him into a record-breaking sale, which earned the club a gigantic profit.

Sunderland endured Andras Nemeth howler

A claim has emerged on Sunderland and one of their failed pursuits of a new striker to add to their squad during the January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Hamburg centre-forward Andras Nemeth has confirmed that he rejected the chance to make the move to the Stadium of Light in favour of plying his trade in the second tier of German football – joining his current club for a fee in the region of €750k (£669k) from Genk.

Speaking to HSV24, the youngster said: “With Sunderland it was very concrete. But I made the decision to come to Hamburg because I think the project here is better for me and my development.”

The Sunderland Echo claimed that the forward was a ‘key target’ for the club as the gem had been identified as a ‘future star’ after extensive scouting in the build-up to the window, but Kristjaan Speakman was unable to convince him to sign for Tony Mowbray’s side after talks.

January howler

Speakman endured a howler with this failed swoop for the Hungary international as the Black Cats chief seemingly did not do enough to tempt the attacker into rejecting Hamburg.

Nemeth’s comments suggest that the German side mapped out a better long-term vision for his development as a player with that an indication Sunderland did not do enough to convince him that moving to Wearside was the best move for his growth.

Therefore, the club’s sporting director could potentially have done a better job of selling the prospect of playing for Mowbray’s side in the years to come.

Their error in doing so has only been exacerbated because of the events that have played out since the turn of the year. Indeed, Joe Gelhardt, who joined on loan from Leeds last month, is the only senior striker option heading into the second half of the season.

Ross Stewart has been ruled out of the remainder of the Championship campaign and Ellis Simms was recalled by parent club Everton, to help with their battle against relegation from the Premier League, at the start of January.

Gelhardt has played less than 100 matches in his senior career and the Mackems are asking a lot of the talented youngster to be Mowbray’s only number nine between now and May.

Bringing in another talented youngster,  particularly one such as Nemeth, could have eased the burden on the Leeds loanee by adding to the club’s options in the final third.

The 20-year-old Hamburg striker, who talent scout Jacek Kulig once hailed as “complete”, has already scored his first goal in the second division in Germany, despite playing 12 minutes of football, after scoring three goals and providing one assist in four starts in the Pro League for Genk since the start of last season.

Nemeth, who has scored once in his solitary appearance for Hungary at senior level, is a promising young marksman who has shown that he has the potential – after also finding the back of the net eight times in 11 matches for his country at U21 level – to be a reliable goalscorer as his development continues.

Therefore, Sunderland may live to regret their failure to sign the talented gem, in the immediate future and the long term, with Speakman now potentially left to ponder what else he could have done to convince the 20-year-old.
