Jos Buttler braced to step in as No.3, but unchanged XI could be on the cards for second Test
George Dobell in Pallekele13-Nov-2018England have confirmed that Ben Foakes will keep in the second Test in Pallekele with Jos Buttler admitting the standards he set had been “a wake-up call”.Foakes enjoyed what Buttler described as “probably the best debut ever in Test cricket” in Galle. After becoming the first England keeper to score a century in Asia (and only the second from any nation to make one on debut), Foakes equalled the record for the quickest dismissal by a keeper on debut – he claimed a catch from the second delivery of the innings – and soon afterwards completed a stumping, too.It left Buttler accepting that he had been set an “example” of the “level you need to get to” as a keeper.”Ben had a fantastic game in Galle,” Buttler said. “Probably the best debut ever in Test cricket. By the second afternoon, he had a hundred, a stumping and a catch.”He is a fantastic gloveman. It’s a good reminder and a little wake-up call that he’s the level you need to get to. Just looking personally, he’s a great example to someone like myself as to where I need to get to.”While Buttler accepted there were times when his role as keeper helped him relax as a batsman, he also argued that giving up the gloves had allowed him more time to work on his batting.”If I look back to the Ashes in 2015, I didn’t get the balance right between practising my batting and wicketkeeping,” Buttler said. “I was very wicketkeeping-orientated. My batting faltered. I’ve read Matt Prior saying in the past that as a wicketkeeper-batsman, you’re going to train harder and longer than most.”There are days when being an all-rounder is an advantage to you. It makes you more relaxed. If you don’t have a good day with one discipline, you can affect the game with the other. Or if you do one really well in one, you can take that confidence into the other.Jos Buttler bats during training in Pallekele•Getty Images
“But with the summer just gone, I’ve really enjoyed the role in the side [as a specialist batsman]. With more emphasis on my batting, I’ve really enjoyed the improvements there.”Meanwhile Joe Root hinted that Jonny Bairstow might have to sit out the second Test as his ankle injury heals. While Bairstow batted and fielded in training on Monday, England want to ensure there is no chance of a setback.”It’s quite a serious injury,” Root said. “I think he’s still a week or so off being 100 percent.”He’s mad keen to get back out there and play. He is pretty much close to flat out as he can be at the moment in the fielding and with his batting. It’s a good sign.”Root also explained the reasoning behind confirming Foakes as keeper for the second Test.”Ben is going to keep,” he said. “We’ve come to Sri Lanka to win this tour. And in these conditions, I think Ben is the best option behind the stumps.”Jonny is a fine keeper and what he’s done over the last couple of years has been exceptional. He’s pretty much been faultless and, long-term, I see him as a focal part of the Test team.”But this is a great opportunity for Ben to show his ability and I think you’ve got to reward a performance like last week.”
Liverpool's recent Premier League draw at Luton Town served as a timely reminder of just how much progress is still to come in Jurgen Klopp's latest Anfield chapter. The German did well to rebuild his midfield during the summer transfer window, welcoming Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch, and so far, the quartet of arrivals have all enjoyed solid starts to their Liverpool careers.
Whilst the focus was firmly fixed on solving Klopp's midfield problem during the summer, the Reds failed to address their defensive depth, and that's where their attention must turn in January, with a Newcastle United target now in mind.
Liverpool transfer news
We've seen in the past just how much damage injuries to key defenders can do at Anfield, as Klopp once played half a season with Fabinho at the heart of the backline, as well as occasionally asking Jordan Henderson to step in alongside youngsters like Rhys Williams. The sight of midfielders forced to play centre-back is one that the Liverpool boss will not want to see ever again, and the January transfer window can ensure that's the case.
As things stand, the Reds have Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and the young Jarell Quansah to call on. Given the injury history of Matip and Gomez, however, those in Merseyside could do with one more option, which could come in the form of a Bundesliga defender. According to Sport1 in Germany, Liverpool could make a move for Willian Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt, despite their desperation to keep hold of the 22-year-old.
Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche told Sport1: "Certainly he is making a good development. But our plan is for him to stay with us longer. After the big upheaval last summer, the young players are expected to develop gradually: Pacho has immediately become a top performer. But he still has issues he can work on."
Pacho's contract doesn't run out until 2028, but Sport1 claim that it would be no shock to the Reds, alongside Newcastle United and Manchester United, make their move for the centre-back in 2024.
Liverpool should move for "world class" Pacho
A 22-year-old centre-back who is impressing in one of Europe's top leagues, Pacho ticks every box for Liverpool, who could avoid a potential defensive crisis by moving for the Frankfurt man in January. Of course, a deal would be a difficult one to negotiate given the words of Krosche, but the Reds would be doing no harm by testing the waters with an offer in January. Pacho's stats certainly show that he can keep up with the current Liverpool backline too, giving Klopp plenty to think about.

It's no real surprise after looking at the numbers that the Ecuador international has been at the centre of praise during his time at Frankfurt, including from current manager Dino Toppmoller, who told Bild Sport via Sport1: "His (defending) is absolutely world-class."
A frustrating week for Manchester City came to an end on Sunday as they were beaten 2-0 by Premier League leaders Liverpool at The Etihad.
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai secured all three points for Arne Slot’s men, who are now 11 points clear at the top of the division.
This came off the back of a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League, resulting in their exit from the competition, on Wednesday night, thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe.
There were some positives for Pep Guardiola and his team to take from the defeat to the Reds, though, and one was the performance of Abdukodir Khusanov at the heart of the defence.
Abdukodir Khusanov's performance against Liverpool
The January signing from Ligue 1 side Rennes was selected alongside Nathan Ake at centre-back, with Ruben Dias left on the bench, and stepped up with an excellent showing for the Cityzens.
Abdukodir Khusanov in action for Man City
Khusanov had a nightmare debut against Chelsea, making an error for Noni Madueke’s goal after just three minutes, but the 20-year-old titan appears to have settled into Premier League life now.
The talented youngster made a terrific last-man challenge on Szoboszlai towards the end of the game and halted Salah, when the score was 0-0, in the first half when the forward appeared set to test Ederson unchallenged.
Chalkboard
In total, he made six clearances, one block, one tackle, and one interception, whilst the centre-back also won two of his three duels and completed 99% (87/88) of his attempted passes.
Khusanov made some vital defensive interventions and produced some excellent moments to keep Liverpool at bay, whilst Ake struggled in the left-sided centre-back role.
Why Nathan Ake should be dropped
Guardiola must instantly drop the Netherlands international from the starting line-up for the next game against Tottenham Hotspur after he put in a dismal display against Liverpool.
As you can see in the clip above, Salah’s goal to open the scoring at The Etihad came via a deflection off Ake, as the left-footed flop dangled a leg out and deflected the effort past Ederson.
The former Chelsea and Bournemouth star offered very little from a defensive perspective, as Salah also burst past him with ease in the left channel and Khusanov had to sweep up and win possession back before the forward could get a shot away in the first half.

As you can see in the table above, Ake lost 100% of his duels in the match and did not make a single tackle, interception, or block to help his side out.
Whereas, Khusanov, as aforementioned won two of his three ground duels and made six clearances, tackles, blocks, and interceptions combined, which means that he showed up the Dutch dud – who is ten years his senior – on Sunday.
Guardiola must, now, instantly drop Ake from the XI and bring Dias, who has won 54% of his duels in the Premier League this season, back into the side to provide a dominant presence alongside Khusanov against Spurs.

It will then be down to the Dutchman to show, in training or off the bench, that he can bounce back with an improved display when he next gets an opportunity to start.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery could be dealt a huge blow in his endeavours to keep hold of one of his star men in January after his recent positive form, according to a report.
Aston Villa updates: Watkins for England, Soler links
Speaking to Sky Sports, pundit Jamie Carragher has given a glowing endorsement regarding Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins' future at international level and had indicated that the free-scoring 27-year-old should be second in command to Harry Kane for England.
Carragher stated via The Daily Mail: "Even when he doesn't score he can play a big role and you can see that. As the game has gone on he runs in behind. When he stand alongside him, I thought he was taller. He has that presence and the pace.
"If Harry Kane is injured, he is England's centre-forward. Him and [Moussa] Diaby look like they're trying to combine. The set up means he doesn't need to come deep, you can see it all and it's all about getting it central. He doesn't need to go deep, he can create space between the lines."
According to reports, Emery's men are keen to bolster their engine room in the January transfer window and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Carlos Soler has been identified as an Aston Villa transfer target.
Claims indicate that Spain international Soler is believed to be keen on a new challenge in 2024; however, both Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion and La Liga outfit Valencia will rival the Villans to bring in the 26-year-old.
Club captain John McGinn has urged his teammates to target a top-four finish and subsequent qualification for the Champions League this term after Aston Villa defeated West Ham United 4-1 on Sunday, stating via BBC Sport: "This is a demanding place to play but the manager has educated the fans a bit. He has pleaded with them to be patient. Hopefully we can try and disrupt that top four, top six. It is not going to be easy, but why not? Why can't we challenge them and do what Newcastle did last season?"

Aston Villa transfer news – Douglas Luiz
According to an update on Douglas Luiz's future from 90min, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is personally keen to bring the Brazil international, who he holds a personal relationship with after working with the midfielder at Manchester City, to the Emirates Stadium in the January transfer window.
Despite both Arteta and Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar being huge fans of Luiz, the Villans have no intention to listen to any offers for the in-form 25-year-old as they aim to secure Champions League qualification.
From midfield, Luiz has enjoyed a blistering start to the campaign so far for Aston Villa, netting six times in his opening 14 appearances across all competitions (Luiz statistics – Transfermarkt).
Aston Villa will be desperate to keep hold of Luiz and will imaginably pull out all the stops to ensure he remains in the West Midlands for the time being, so it would be a massive blow if Arsenal can wiggle their way in and convince NSWE to sell.
Four of the eight quarter-finalists have been decided, but who were the top performers in this week's UEFA Champions League matches?
After an exciting week of UEFA Champions League action, the quarter-final spots are half full, with Paris, Bayern, Man City and Real Madrid all sure of a place in the last eight following victories this week.
Bayern fought back from a first-leg defeat to keep their European dream alive with a dominant 3-0 win on home soil against Lazio on Tuesday, with Harry Kane chipping in with two goals. Paris and Man City, meanwhile, strolled into the next round with comfortable wins against Real Sociedad and Copenhagen, respectively. Real Madrid, on the other hand, scraped through after drawing 1-1 with Leipzig on Wednesday, sealing a 2-1 aggregate victory.
Things are heating up in Europe's most prestigious club competition, but who were the standout performers after another exciting matchday? With the help of the FedEx Performance Zone, GOAL takes a look at the stars of the UCL last week.

Kylian Mbappé | Paris | 72 points
French star Kylian Mbappé showed he still has a huge role to play for the Ligue 1 champions despite his imminent departure in the summer. He was the star of the show as his side ran out 2-1 winners at the Reale Arena on Tuesday, firing in twice as they claimed a 2-1 win, going through 3-1 on aggregate. The 25-year-old had four shots in the game – twice as many as anyone else on the field – and completed four dribbles as he constantly tried to create danger.

Harry Kane | Bayern | 72 points
The pressure was on Harry Kane and his Bayern co-stars as they trailed Lazio 1-0 heading into the second leg of their last-16 tie in Bavaria. Luckily for coach Thomas Tuchel, the England striker delivered as he helped fire the home team to a 3-0 win. Kane opened the scoring late in the first half and then put the result beyond doubt when he netted his team's third midway through the second period.

Julian Àlvarez | Man City | 72 points
Reigning UEFA Champions League holders Man City had a significant advantage from the first leg when they welcomed Copenhagen to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. However, last season's treble winners had to make sure they got the job done and Julian Àlvarez was pivotal in ensuring they did so. He whipped in a perfect corner for Manuel Akanji to open the scoring just five minutes into the match and then just four minutes later, caught goalkeeper Kamil Grabara off guard with a shot that slipped through his fingers to make it 2-0.

Mohamed Elyounoussi | Copenhagen | 69 points
Copenhagen had a mountain to climb less than 10 minutes into their visit to Manchester, but Mohamed Elyounoussi gave them something to be proud of. The midfielder applied a fine finish to a backheel from Orri Oskarsson to make it 2-1 after 29 minutes. The Norwegian was his team's most dangerous player throughout, registering three shots – as many as Erling Haaland and Julian Àlvarez – and chipped in with more successful tackles than anyone else in the game.
ScorecardA fine century from Michael Burgess, the second of his career, helped Sussex to a formidable first innings score at the Fischer County Ground before Colin Ackermann, with an unbeaten half-century, led a spirited Leicestershire reply.Burgess and Ishant Sharma compiled a partnership of 153 for Sussex’s eighth wicket, batting through the morning session without being parted.Burgess, who began his career at Leicestershire, was first to his 50, twice hitting left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson over midwicket for six as he sought to accelerate the scoring rate.India Test bowler Ishant was equally positive as he registered a maiden first-class half-century, leaving his previous career best score of 31 well behind and he would later follow it with two wickets.Ishant, who has played 81 Tests and 80 ODIs, clearly relished his battle with Leicestershire’s own international bowler Mohammad Abbas. Abbas was convinced he had Ishant leg before on 34, but other than that neither batsman gave a chance as the partnership passed three figures.Sharma was finally dismissed for 66, attempting to loft offspinner Ateeq Javid for a straight six, but failing to clear Gavin Griffiths at long-off.”I think I got my highest previous score in a Test match, so I’m pretty happy – I wanted to do as well as I could for the team. Every bowler loves to have a bat, and in internationals you don’t get that many opportunities, especially for India, so I was looking forward to having an opportunity.”I’ve been nightwatchman for India for four years now, so I’m used to the role. Michael [Burgess] and I just batted. I didn’t get nervous when I got close to 50, I wasn’t really thinking about it, just staying in my space.”My main job is to take wickets, so I was probably more pleased about that. The wicket is a bit on the slow side, with more bounce from the top end. It’s good to get used to the conditions, and the soft grounds, I’m getting a lot of benefit from that.”Burgess had a fortunate escape on 98, pulling a delivery from Parkinson to midwicket, where Michael Carberry got both hands to the ball above his head but could not hold the chance. He went to his century off 146 balls, hitting five fours as well as the two sixes, before Sussex captain Ben Brown declared.Buoyed by his success with the bat, Ishant then made an early breakthrough with the ball when he trapped Leicestershire opener Paul Horton leg before with a full delivery. Carberry, defending with purpose and real determination, and the in-form Ackermann saw off the new ball, but Ishant returned to have Carberry adjudged leg before, half-forward to an in-swinger.Sussex should have had a third wicket when Ackermann turned a David Wiese delivery straight to midwicket, only for Luke Wright, looking into the sun, to fail to hold a straightforward chance.
West Bromwich Albion return to action in the Championship after the first international break of the season as they travel away to face Bristol City this afternoon.
What was West Brom's last result?
The Baggies head into the match today off the back of a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Huddersfield at The Hawthorns at the start of this month.
Jack Rudoni scored a 96th-minute winner for the away side, after John Swift had equalised for Carlos Corberan's men, to secure all three points for Neil Warnock.
West Brom are currently sat 11th in the Championship table with two wins, one draw, and two defeats in their first five matches of the campaign, and now have a chance to move up the division with a win against the Robins.
Will Grady Diangana start against Bristol City?
In order to improve the club's chances of coming away with all three points today, Corberan should ruthlessly ditch Matt Phillips in favour of Grady Diangana out wide.
The former Blackpool star lined up on the left flank against Huddersfield before the international break and produced a disappointing performance, which could open the door for the ex-West Ham man to come in.
West Brom winger Grady Diangana.
Diangana is a skilful forward who could split open the opposition's defence and provide a moment of brilliance that could win West Brom the game. Journalist Graeme Brown once claimed that he was the only player within the squad who has the "potential for magic" at the top end of the pitch.
The £25k-per-week wizard has only played 13 minutes of Championship football, which came off the bench against the Terriers, but showed signs of promise with four goals and six 'big chances' created in 21 league starts last season.
Phillips, on the other hand, scored two goals and created three 'big chances' for his teammates in 25 second division outings during the 2022/23 campaign.
The 32-year-old has scored once and created zero 'big chances' in five Championship starts so far this season and struggled against Huddersfield.
As per Sofascore, Phillips created one chance and completed one dribble in 90 minutes of action at The Hawthorns, whilst he also failed to produce any shots on target.
West Brom winger Grady Diangana.
Whereas, Diangana created a 'big chance' and completed one dribble in just 13 minutes off the bench for the Baggies, as per Sofascore, which suggests that he had a greater impact in far fewer minutes.
The former England U21 international, who produced eight goals and six assists in 23 league starts throughout the 2019/20 campaign, appears to be more likely than Phillips to make something happen at the top end of the pitch.
When you compare their respective form since the start of last season at Championship level, Diangana stands out as the best option for Corberan on the flank in regards to offering a threat as a scorer or creator in the final third against the Robins this afternoon.
Therefore, the former Leeds United assistant must ruthlessly drop Phillips for the first time this term and finally unleash the ex-West Ham starlet from the start to allow him to showcase his talent.
Everton are considering a few more signings to enhance the squad's chances of success, having started the 2023/24 Premier League season in dismal fashion.
A multitude of attacking acquisitions have been made, with Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison joining on loan, young striker Youssef Chermiti arriving from Sporting Lisbon and Udinese talisman Beto arriving to bring goals to the blue half of Merseyside.
Director of Football Kevin Thelwell has work to do on the defensive front, however, and according to recent revelations, Sean Dyche appears to have identified his man.
Who are Everton interested in signing?
According to transfer insider Gianluca Di Marzio, Everton are currently in negotiations with Borussia Monchengladbach for defender Nico Elvedi, who has also attracted attention from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
With a reported price tag of just £8m, securing the Switzerland star's signature could prove to be a coup for Dyche and co, and action must now be taken to ensure he joins the fold at Goodison Park.
How good is Nico Elvedi?
Having once been described as “incredible” by former Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl, Elvedi would undoubtedly improve the Everton backline as they look to navigate away from danger this season.

Indeed, the Toffees have been mired in obscurity for some time, having escaped relegation peril with an upturn in form across the past two Premier League seasons.
nico-elvedi-wolves-borussia-monchengladbach
Whilst the crux of the club's issues last year was the absence of attacking verve, finishing the term as the second-lowest scorers in the top-flight, Everton are unquestionably in need of fresh life in the defensive third.
Yerry Mina, Conor Coady and Mason Holgate have all left the club this summer, and while the talented Jarred Branthwaite has returned from a successful loan spell with PSV Eindhoven, a star of Elvedi's ilk would bolster the backline and then some.
Having chalked up 270 displays for his Bundesliga outfit, the 26-year-old has made an average of at least four clearances per game across three of the past four league campaigns, as per WhoScored, which could prove invaluable for the Toffees given the recent struggles, having lost all three matches to start the 2023/24 campaign.
The 47-cap Swiss actually ranks among the top 10% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for clearances per 90, while also ranking among the top 6% for pass completion and the top 17% for goals per 90, as per FBref.
It is this crisp passing ability and natural inclination to find the back of the net himself that has prompted Bundesliga.com to liken his skill set akin to Manchester City's star centre-back John Stones, citing his elegance on the ball and flexibility across a three and four-man defence.
Stones has risen to the fore with Manchester City after joining the club from the Toffees for £47.5m back in 2016, having won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League, heralded as "sensational" by pundit Jamie Carragher for his incredible rise under Pep Guardiola – it is a fair bet to label the 29-year-old as world-class.
The 67-cap England international ranks among the top 7% of positional peers for goals and assists, the top 5% for pass completion and the top 11% for progressive passes per 90, and if Elvedi can bring his own similar qualities to the Premier League then Everton could have their next version of the Citizen gem to solidify Dyche's defence.
Highlighted by former manager Adi Hutter for an "amazing" shackling performance against Robert Lewandowski, Elvedi boasts both the technicality and tenacity to thrive as a ball-playing star and as a no-nonsense central defender, and he could be just the man to unlock a flagging backline at Goodison Park.
