Tottenham starlet Griffiths set to sign a professional contract

One of Tottenham’s hottest prospects, young striker Reo Griffiths, is expected to spurn Bundesliga interest and sign a professional contract with the club, according to the Evening Standard.

What’s the story, then?

The Standard report that the 17-year-old hitman is expected to remain with the North London club and sign his first long-term deal in North London after a season where he scored 28 goals at Under 18 level.

They go on to say that he is concerned about how Harry Kane is going to halt his progression once he gets to first-team level but will move into the Under 23 setup for the coming campaign.

That deal should see off interest from Bundesliga clubs, who have been circling for young English talent across the board, and RB Leipzig have been rumoured to have been close to a £2m swoop.

He is the perfect Kane backup

Signing players to be in reserve for England captain and Spurs talisman Harry Kane is a thankless task for Tottenham because, as Griffiths has already eluded to above, it is such a hard task to overtake him in the pecking order.

All elite strikers will be wary of coming to Tottenham because they know they will likely be playing second fiddle to Kane, so promoting within is the ideal solution to that problem.

He scores goals for fun and Mauricio Pochettino has enjoyed great success when it comes to promoting young English talent and Griffiths is good enough to make the jump, if his goalscoring record at youth level is anything to go by.

Three reasons Tottenham must hijack Man City’s bid to sign Boubakary Soumare

According to reports in the Daily Mail on January 18, runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City scouted Lille youngster Boubakary Soumare in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Rennes on Wednesday night.

The 18-year-old has broken into the first team with the Ligue 1 outfit after joining them from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer, and his impressive performances have caught the eye of Citizens boss Pep Guardiola.

The Daily Mail says that the Spaniard is looking to strengthen his side’s defensive midfield options, with a report from the same source earlier this month saying that Guardiola potentially sees the teenager as a long-term replacement for Yaya Toure, whose contract is due to expire this summer.

The report adds that Lille may have to cash in on the France U19 international as they are under pressure to sell to evade financial sanctions from the French football federation.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are yet to sign anyone this month as they look to secure a top-four finish in the English top flight as well as advance past Juventus in the knockout stages of the Champions League, but Mauricio Pochettino will be keeping a close eye on the market.

If the Argentine does want to strengthen his squad before January 31, bringing Soumare to Wembley could prove to be a shrewd move.

Here are three reasons Tottenham must hijack Man City’s bid to sign the 18-year-old…

Defensive midfield cover

Tottenham have been without both Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele at points this season through injury, with the likes of Eric Dier, Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks filling in for the duo in the middle of the park.

It highlighted Spurs’ lack of defensive midfield cover, and bringing a promising young player like Soumare in to fill the role in the second-half of the campaign and push for a spot in the first team would be a smart move.

His qualities

The 18-year-old is 6ft 2in tall, strong and it is no wonder that Pep Guardiola already sees the teenager as a potential long-term replacement for Yaya Toure.

According to WhoScored.com, the France U19 international’s main strengths are his passing and his ability in the air, and he has an accuracy of 87% for the former in eight Ligue 1 appearances this season.

Meanwhile, he has won nine of the 11 aerial duels he has faced, while he has shown his quality on the ball by successfully completing eight of the nine dribbles he has attempted.

Price tag

The Daily Mail mentioned earlier this month that Lille may be forced to cash in on the 18-year-old before the January transfer window closes because of their financial difficulties, even though they only signed him during the summer.

That could mean that Tottenham will be able to pick up the highly-rated French starlet for a reasonable price before January 31, and that should interest the north London outfit as they love to sign a young player with huge potential for a low fee.

The winners and losers of England vs Denmark

England manager Roy Hodgson got his last chance to study his options up close for the forthcoming World Cup in Brazil.

A solid yet uninspiring 1-0 victory over a compact and unimaginative Denmark will give Hodgson plenty to ponder in the upcoming weeks as the domestic season draws to a close.

Here are a few of the winners and losers from the Wembley encounter:

Winners

Raheem Sterling – Starting with the lively Sterling was a great show of confidence from Hodgson for a player who has been right at the centre of Liverpool’s rise up the table in recent weeks. Sterling showed a willingness to take on numerous defenders at once. Sterling created four chances in the game. With competition from the likes of Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana and past flavour-of-the-month Andros Townsend, Sterling proved himself as a strong candidate for a starting berth down the wing come Brazil. With Theo Walcott unavailable Sterling feels the best direct replacement with his pace and if he keeps up his form for Liverpool in the Premiership Hodgson would be blind not to select him.

Jordan Henderson – Hodgson opted for Jordan Henderson to man the centre of the field with Liverpool colleague and captain Steven Gerrard, along with Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere. His selection alone suggested he is strongly in the manager’s thinking and when England began to take the game to Denmark late in the first half in during the second, Henderson showed some of the drive he’s displayed for Liverpool on numerous occasions this season. A few neat touches and some accurate passing, most notably a fantastically weighted slide-rule pass through to Danny Welbeck should have ended with him gaining an assist, but for the inspired form of Kasper Schmeichel. Henderson maybe didn’t impose himself on the game as consistently he would have liked but at 23 and with only eight caps to his name he did his case no harm.

Adam Lallana – Given just over half an hour as a replacement for the injury-struck Jack Wilshere, and he made an immediate impact. His attacking intent was obvious as he always looked to pick the ball up inside Denmark’s penalty area. Lallana is adept with both feet and he has the ability to create space in tight areas. A slick dummy and beautifully flighted left-footed cross put the ball on a plate for Sturridge to nod past Schmeichel. Seven goals and seven assists in the league for Southampton shows Lallana combines creative play with a solid output. Hodgson can’t have ignored his impact.

Losers

Kieran Gibbs –As Leighton Baines’ inclusion in the final 23 seems a dead cert, the sheer fact that it there is one left-back spot to fight over makes the likelihood of Kieran Gibbs’ addition even more unlikely. Despite his consistent performances for Arsenal this season he struggles with injury on a regular basis. He failed to make the squad for the Denmark friendly and solid performances from both Ashley Cole and Luke Shaw may mean he fails to make the provisional 30 come May. His only hope may be that Cole’s time on the bench for Chelsea sees him edge ahead of the ex-Arsenal man.

Tom Cleverley – Despite Cleverley struggling for any kind of form this season, he retains the confidence of Hodgson. When the England manager opted to replace Henderson with Oxlade-Chamberlain with just 13 minutes to go, it suggested a change of direction. Arsene Wenger remains convinced that Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future lies in a central role and Hodgson has seemingly heeded this advice. His inclusion in central areas for Arsenal and now his presence in the centre of the field suggests Hodgson is looking for a more dynamic option to sit alongside Gerrard. Cleverley’s basic style of play combined with a lack of international experience is a problem and Hodgson has a number of better young options to play in midfield as the game versus Denmark demonstrated.

Jack Wilshere – His early collision with Daniel Agger will have had many Arsenal fans screaming at their television sets to take him off immediately. The pain was evident on his anguished face as he kicked the bottom of Agger’s boot. Choosing to continue, it seemed as though the pain was just from the initial impact. Wilshere confirmed after the game that it was just bruising but the news that he has suffered a hairline fracture will be most unwelcome for Wenger, Wilshere and Hodgson. He is destined to sit out for six weeks which will leave him with just five games to prove to Hodgson he is back to form and fitness. These things have a habit of taking time to recover and Wilshere may just find himself in a race against time.

Reading track top striker

Reading are chasing Burnley striker Charlie Austin and are willing to spend £4 million on the player they released as a 15-year- old.

The 23-year-old has made a fast start to the season scoring 15 goals in 12 games, which has gained admirers from the Premier League including the likes of Reading, Fulham and West Brom.

The former lower league striker who played for the likes of Thatcham Town, Kintbury Rangers, Hungerford Town and Poole Town signed for Burnley in 2011 after joining from Swindon. Austin has developed into one of the stand-out strikers of the championship and is the top scorer in the whole country.

The former builder has filled the void after former strike partner Jay Rodriguez left for Premier League Southampton.

Despite Austin’s start to the season, Burnley have yet to trouble the top of the table, and Eddie Howe’s men find themselves in 16th place after their recent 4-3 defeat against Crystal Palace, where once again Austin was on target.

While Burnley have plenty of fire power up front, boss Eddie Howe admits he needs to address his defensive frailties which will live up to the front line prowess.

Three centre-back alternatives Rangers should consider in case Connor Goldson deal fails

As reported by The Daily Record, Rangers have failed with two bids for Brighton & Hove Albion defender Connor Goldson over the last week. It’s clear that the 25-year-old is wanted by the Ibrox outfit, with defensive reinforcements needed if they are to compete with Celtic for the silverware in Scottish football next season following their double treble. The Light Blues conceded more goals than every other side in the Scottish Premiership’s top six in 2017/18, which was especially disappointing considering they scored more goals than any other team, including the Hoops. If they can sort out that leaky defensive line then it’ll go a long way towards showing improvement under new manager Steven Gerrard. With two bids rejected though, other options must now be considered should an agreement with the Premier League side become impossible. Here are THREE alternative centre-back options that could do a job for Rangers next season…James Collins has played his last game for West Ham United after the expiration of his contract at the London Stadium. Spending ten seasons at the club in two spells, Collins is a favourite with supporters and gave 100% commitment to the club right until the very end, helping them avoid relegation in 2017/18.A 51-cap international with Wales who has played in the Premier League in every season since 2005/06, he would offer Rangers immense experience and leadership, perhaps following in the footsteps of the likes of David Weir and Clint Hill. His average of 9.1 clearances a game in the English top-flight last season was more than any other player in the division, as collated by WhoScored, demonstrating a no nonsense style that could be a big hit in a team that is crying out for defensive ruthlessness. At 34 years of age, he doesn’t have massive long-term potential, but as a problem solver on a season-by-season basis, he could prove be a shrewd signing by Steven Gerrard this summer.Another hugely experienced option available on a free transfer this summer is Aston Villa’s John Terry. After his surprise move to Birmingham from Chelsea last summer, Terry was a massive part of the side that almost clinched promotion from the English Championship in 2017/18, but will not be at the club next season. His departure was announced on Wednesday, with financial reasons stated by the club for not renewing his contract as Villa are under pressure to comply with financial fair play regulations.Terry would of course command high wages should he decide he wants to play somewhere else, but perhaps linking up with his former England teammate Steven Gerrard would prove appealing. The Chelsea legend has achieved pretty much everything in club football and despite now being 37-years-old, he could be another short-term option to come in and forge a way forward for the Rangers defence. If Rangers don’t want to go down the more experienced route and would prefer to bring in a young centre-back with plenty of potential, they could do a lot worse than considering Aberdeen stand-out Scott McKenna for a transfer. The Scotland international has been one of the division’s best over the last year, nominated for the Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2017/18.A captain of the Scottish U21s side when not selected for the senior squad, the 21-year-old also hit headlines with his stunner of a strike against Kilmarnock in January, winning the division’s goal of the season award this week.

Having recently signed a new long-term contract at Aberdeen, Rangers may find it difficult to convince the Dons to part with one of their prize assets, but the lure of the Light Blues is strong and there’s no doubting a move to Ibrox could advance the player’s career.

Outside of Celtic, there aren’t many better prospects in Scottish football right now and the Gers should be making an effort to bring the best young Scottish players to the club, building for the future.

Liverpool were once the Big Six’s most feared: They must rediscover why on Sunday

Six weeks after taking the reins from Brendan Rodgers, there was a moment that truly announced Jurgen Klopp’s arrival in English football.

While a 3-1 win over a down-and-out Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge showed undoubted promise, Liverpool’s 4-1 mauling of Manchester City at the Eithad Stadium two games later – back when Manuel Pellegrini’s side were the setting the pace in the Premier League and firm favourites for the title – was something truly special.

It was the game in which Klopp’s much-lauded style of play from his Borussia Dortmund days and his enigmatic style of management appeared to truly take effect on a lukewarm Liverpool squad inherited from Rodgers.

Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana combined in attack to a scintillating degree; pressing high to win the ball off City’s shaky defence and marauding to Joe Hart’s goal with irresistibly fluid passing moves.

Liverpool were three goals up within 32 minutes and the performance became a template for what many envisaged from Klopp’s Liverpool – not only energetic, attacking football at ferocious velocity, but also huge results against the Premier League’s top clubs.

That was the prevailing theme from Klopp’s first full season at Anfield as well. Incredibly, Liverpool went the whole campaign without losing a single game to the rest of the big six, averaging two points per match. They became the side most feared by divisional rivals, not least because their style of pressing was the direct antithesis of what the rest of the big six were doing on the most part – focusing their efforts almost entirely on retaining possession and inadvertently allowing themselves to be picked off.

But this season, something has drastically changed; from six encounters thus far, Liverpool have taken just six points off their big six competitors and rather than handing out heavy thrashings like we saw at the Etihad Stadium in November 2015, the Reds have found themselves on the receiving end.

The Etihad Stadium was in fact the scene of their most humbling defeat of the campaign so far – annihilated by City in a 5-0 drubbing – and that was soon followed by a 4-1 loss at Wembley to Tottenham Hotspur. The paradox was once Liverpool’s ability to obliterate those closest to them in the table but come unstuck against the Premier League’s more workaday sides; this time around, the Reds are yet to lose to any side outside of the top six, but have only beaten Arsenal.

Despite this, history suggests Liverpool are still the best-placed side in the league to end City’s unbeaten run when they travel to Anfield this weekend. The Citizens have only claimed one top flight win at Anfield throughout the Premier League era, and lost during their last four consecutive visits. Likewise, Liverpool have only ever lost one league game to a big six rival at home under Klopp’s watch – a 1-0 defeat to Louis van Gaal’s laborious Manchester United back in January 2016.

Tactically too, Liverpool are one of the few teams capable of playing Pep Guardiola’s side at their own game – something the vast majority of the big six simply haven’t attempted this season, instead opting to park the bus with disappointing results all-round. They have the energy to press as relentlessly as City and the speed on the counter-attack to exploit the space behind their pushed-up backline. Combine the two with the fact City are still relying upon error-prone centre-halves – particularly John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala – and Liverpool appear well-equipped to take something from Sunday’s game, especially while backed by a vibrant Anfield crowd.

“Since Klopp’s arrival the players have always stepped up in the bigger games and mistakes were few and far between. It gave the team a solid base to build from.

“This time around, however, we’ve seen individuals have shockers against Spurs, City and Arsenal. Klopp’s tactics haven’t been that bad when you look at how he’s set his team up. He’s just been let down by certain players.”

Sam McGuire, Football Whispers

And yet, Liverpool’s underwhelming return against the big six this season remains difficult to ignore. Football Whispers’ Sam McGuire believes individual errors have been the biggest problem, something that certainly rings true regarding the reverse fixture in August when Sadio Mane was sent off for a high boot.

But it feels as if there’s been something more systematic at work than simply players who performed so admirably against top teams last season suddenly falling afoul of personal mistakes. Whether it’s the balance of the starting XI, the way Liverpool approach the match, the personnel involved or the height in which the Reds press, lessons must be learned from this season’s slump against the big six.

The crucial positive for Liverpool though, is that they know they still have the potential to beat their closest rivals – City included.

Burnley 0-2 West Ham – Capital One Cup match review

West Ham United won the battle of claret and blue at Turf Moor to book their place in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Burnley.

After a lacklustre and uninspiring first-half from the Premier League side, Hammers manager Sam Allardyce’s men eventually came through a tough test against the Championship leaders courtesy of two late penalties from Matty Taylor and Jack Collison.

Burnley will have sensed an upset with the form they were taking into this game having not lost at home all season and won 12 of their 15 matches in all competitions so far.

And they looked odds on to have their name in the hat for the next round during the opening 45 minutes as they dominated proceedings while West Ham struggled to see much of the ball.

Prolific Clarets strikers Sam Vokes and Danny Ings, who have 21 goals between them this season, both came close in the early stages but found their efforts equaled by Spanish keeper Adrian. Former West Ham Acadamy graduate Junior Stanislas was also denied by West Ham’s No.2 as they continued to pile the pressure on Sam Allardyce’s side.

Allardyce had made nine changes to the side that faced Swansea in the Premier League just 48 hours prior to this game, with just Mohamed Diame and James Tomkins keeping their place in the starting XI, and the lack of team cohesion appeared to be damaging their chances of victory.

But Allardyce’s words to his players at half-time – which he admits involved telling them that the 2,000 travelling supporters had paid ten times more than they had done and that they needed to go out there give them value for money – appeared to kick them into gear. Jack Collison replaced the unusually quiet Mohamed Diame at the break and suddenly West Ham’s ‘hoof ball’ tactics were transformed into slick, on the floor passing.

Burnley were suddenly on the back foot and had it not been for Carlton Cole and Modibo Maiga’s disappearing act up front, West Ham could have been out of sight by the hour mark.

But Kieran Trippier rattled Adrian’s crossbar after Tomkins had failed Ings 25 yards from goal, which suddenly turned the game in to a real end-to-end cup tie. Both sides began playing good football and were pushing for a winner, seemingly as extra-time and penalties were out of the equation for both parties.

However, the introduction Kevin Nolan with 20 minutes to go proved to be the game changer and, just five minutes after coming on, the midfielder won a contentious penalty after referee Robert Madley adjudged Jason Shackell to have tripped him, and Matty Taylor stepped up to slam the ball home in front of the West Ham supporters.

The penalty looked to have taken the wind out of Burnley’s sails and the game was dead and buried four minutes into stoppage time when Keith Treacy hacked Jack Collison as the Welsh midfielder was through on goal. Treacy was shown the red card and Collison slotted past Tom Heaton to secure West Ham’s passage into the quarter-finals.

Ferguson dismisses Aguero’s claims

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that Sergio Aguero’s claims that foreign players are treated harshly by Premier League referees is untrue.

The Manchester City forward claimed that some players from abroad are dealt with due to their reputation, with Luis Suarez recently not getting the rub of the green with match officials.

However, the legendary Scottish coach does not feel that players’ origin have an impact on the decision-making process.

“As a subject it is not worth going down because we have known for quite a few years there are plenty of players diving and, you have to say, particularly foreign players,” Ferguson stated in a press conference, published on Sky Sports.

Nani is another player that has been accused of simulation in the past, with the Portugal international denied a penalty in United’s 3-2 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday.

Ferguson has defended the tricky winger and stated that decisions are open to interpretation.

“Nani is not the type to dive. He has never been that type of player.

“It was a penalty kick on Saturday. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t.

“From the referee’s position it was difficult because there were plenty of bodies in front of him. The linesman could have helped him but he didn’t,” he concluded.

Liverpool fans want to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after Sunday performance

Liverpool fans are pleading with the Anfield club to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after his latest performance for the Italian side on Sunday.

The Serbian international was in action against Inter Milan on Sunday and although he produced a strong performance, his side failed get the draw they needed to secure UEFA Champions League qualification next season.

Reds supporters believe he is the perfect midfielder to help them progress in the English Premier League next season and are hoping that lack of elite European competition could open the door to a move this summer.

The player has scored an impressive 14 goals and created 6 assists this season from central attacking midfield, becoming one of the hottest properties in European football.

He is rated at £63m by Transfermarkt.

Is he the kind of player that Liverpool should be looking in the upcoming transfer window?

Three goalkeepers that can replace Celtic’s Craig Gordon in January

Even if Craig Gordon’s Celtic career ended tomorrow, his contribution to the Hoops over the years would be seen as massive.

The former Hearts and Sunderland goalkeeper looked to be heading for early retirement before finding his fitness and form at the Hoops and since his arrival at Celtic Park has often bailed out his team with incredible saves.

This season though he’s struggled to capture the form of seasons past and now at 34 years of age, perhaps it’s time for Celtic to think about making a change and replace him as their number one.

Replacing goalkeepers is always a difficult task but the Hoops have managed it well in recent years. Artur Boruc was replaced by the impressive Fraser Forster who in turn was replaced by Gordon. Who will be the next shot-stopper at Celtic Park?

Here are THREE that should be on Brendan Rodgers’ radar…

Ibrahim Sehic

Qarabag’s Ibrahim Sehic is a player in outstanding form, having just had an incredible UEFA Champions League group stage.

Although his side were dumped out of the competition in a difficult group that included Roma, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, the Bosnian international performed admirably, often winning man of the match awards and making vital saves.

In fact, he made more stops than any other goalkeeper in the competition with 34, according to WhoScored, performing so well that he made the stat tracking website’s group stage best eleven.

Across his 153 match Qarabag career, he’s kept an impressive 78 clean sheets, more than half his matches, conceding just 113 goals. It’s a fantastic record.

At 29, he’s coming into his prime and given his European form it wouldn’t be a surprise to see richer clubs than Celtic make their move for him. The Hoops should think seriously about trying to bring him to Glasgow.

Michel Vorm

Instead of scouring European football for a viable option, Celtic could always take a look at the squads of the English Premier League and look for high quality goalkeepers who aren’t getting a game for their current sides.

One player who fits that bill is Dutch international Michel Vorm, a player who is kept out the Tottenham Hotspur side by the impressive Hugo Lloris.

Usually Spurs’ go-to cup goalkeeper, Vorm is never realistically going to replace Lloris at the North London club and Celtic can offer him plenty in the latter stages of his career, not least regular European football and the chance to win silverware.

With Mauricio Pochettino signing the younger Paulo Gazzaniga, who performed excellently on his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace, the chance of regular football is even slimmer now for Vorm.

Celtic could do with his talents.

Frederik Ronnow

Frederik Ronnow is a goalkepper rapidly gaining a reputation as one of Denmark’s finest, already gaining international caps as an understudy to Kasper Schmeichel.

He’s having a fantastic season at Brondby, keeping 10 clean sheets in 22 appearances and form like that means that it won’t be long before clubs from abroad will be knocking on his door looking for his services.

Still just 25 years of age, he’s a long-term option for a club like Celtic who have done excellently developing and enhancing goalkeeping talent with coach Stevie Woods.

Fearless, agile and a fantastic shot-stopper, he could be part of the next generation at Celtic Park.
