Coisa do passado.

Wheater and ten Doeschate give Essex advantage

Scorecard
Essex’s Adam Wheater seized his chance to impress watching England selector James Whittaker as he destroyed Gloucestershire’s attack on the first day of their Division Two match at Colchester. The pugnacious 21-year-old right-hander plundered 135 as Essex recovered from55 for 5 to post a total of 359 for 9 wicketsWheater pulled and drove with immense authority against pace and spin alike as he scored his runs from 124 deliveries and smashed 17 fours and five sixes. The suffering endured by the visiting bowlers ended when he was trapped leg before by paceman Ian Saxelby – but only after he and Ryan ten Doeschate had shared in a stand of 204 in 38 overs.Ten Doeschate went on to register a season’s Championship best of 120 not out but only after a change of heart by umpire Steve Gale. From the final ball of the morning session, the Netherlands allrounder was given out caught behind following a half-hearted appeal from bowler Will Gidman. But before Ten Doeschate and the rest of the players left the field, the umpire informed the batsman that he had made a mistake and reversed his original decision. The batsman, who had only made 10 at the time of his reprieve, showed his thanks by going on to help himself to 10 fours and a six before bad light cut 11 overs from the day’s schedule.Graham Napier also piled the misery on a toiling attack by hitting two sixes among his six boundaries before he was caught behind for 45. It all ended up as a successful opening day for Essex who still nurse hopes of figuring in the promotion race. But it could not have started more disastrously. Billy Godleman was out lbw to the first delivery of the match to give bowler Jon Lewis his 50th Championship wicket of the summer and the bowler quickly followed up by having Owais Shah caught in the slips.David Payne then had Tom Westley snapped up behind before Will Gidman removed Jaik Mickleburgh and James Foster in the same over. However any hopes Gloucestershire might have entertained of dismissing their opponents vanished as Wheater and Ten Doeschate took charge to establish a new sixth wicket record stand by any county at Colchester. The previous best was 178 by Trevor Bailey and Ray Smith against Lancashire in 1951.Lewis emerged as the visitors’ most successful bowler with 3 for 43 whilst Gidman and Payne claimed 2 for 65 and 2 for 74 respectively.

Dawson leads Hampshire's safety battle

Hampshire 145 for 3 v Sussex 3438
ScorecardYoung opening batsman Liam Dawson continued his fine early-season form in the County Championship with an important half-century for Hampshire against Sussex at the Rose Bowl. Dawson, playing only due to the absence of experienced pair Michael Carberry and Michael Lumb, hit his fifth 50-plus score as his team began the daunting chase of Sussex’s first-innings total of 438.At stumps on day two, 21-year-old Dawson’s 60 had helped the hosts to 145 for 3 to trail Sussex by 293 runs. Sussex resumed this morning at 321 for 3 but managed only 117 more runs for their final seven wickets, three of which fell in the morning session to Hampshire pace bowler David Griffiths.Griffiths removed Ben Brown (23) in his first over and then got rid of danger man Murray Goodwin for 43 three overs later. Griffiths struck again with the score on 342 when Luke Wright (9) edged to the wicketkeeper. Griffiths’ three scalps in five overs was impressive on a wicket that was still playing as well as it had done on the first day.Hampshire were eventually held up when Andy Hodd and Naved Arif added 46 for the seventh wicket. Spinner Danny Briggs broke the stand when he bowled Hodd for 31 and, four runs later, Arif guided Friedel de Wet to Dominic Cork to end his effort on 18.Naved ul-Hasan struck three sixes against Briggs in a breezy 34 before Cork finished off the resistance, getting a leg-before verdict against the Pakistani and then giving Nic Pothas his third catch of the innings behind the stumps when James Anyon (15) touched a rising delivery. Griffiths finished with figures of 3 for 73 while there were two wickets apiece for Cork, Briggs and De Wet.Hampshire made a strong start to their reply with Dawson and Jimmy Adams putting on a 98-run opening partnership before Anyon struck with two quick wickets. Adams was the first to go, caught behind for a watchful 24, but Dawson’s proved to be an important wicket for Sussex.Dawson had been in superb form, striking eight fours in his 83-ball 60 before he went the same way, caught behind, to leave Hampshire on 103 for 2. Monty Panesar plunged Hampshire into further trouble when he trapped Neil McKenzie lbw for six in the 36th over, but Johann Myburgh and James Vince took Hampshire safely through to stumps unbeaten on 18 and 15 respectively.

Kevin Campbell hails Celtic’s team spirit

Former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell has lauded the team spirit that Ange Postecoglou has created at Celtic this season.

The Lowdown: Ange’s superb first season at Celtic

The 56-year-old took charge at Parkhead last summer and has been an immediate hit for the Hoops, impressing with his all-round management at the club.

Celtic already have a Scottish League Cup to their name and the Premiership title is now within touching distance with three matches remaining.

It has been a wonderful season after the disappointment of last term, and it is now a case of getting the job done to round off a tremendous campaign for the manager and the club.

The Latest: Campbell praises Celtic’s team spirit

Celtic’s team spirit has shone through since August, with Kyogo Furuhashi speaking out about the support that he received while he was injured.

Campbell waxed lyrical over that intangible quality to Football Insider as he gushed:

“They clearly have a great dressing room mentality. The team spirit is there. When a player is injured he often feels left out.

“It sounds like the players at Celtic have the right attitude under Postecoglou. The manager has done an excellent job there. Kyogo embodies that. He is a brilliant player and character by the sounds of it.

“The dressing room culture is right at Celtic and that is so important if you want to achieve success.”

The Verdict: Good times for Celtic

It certainly feels as though something potentially special is building at Parkhead, with Postecoglou transforming matters after Neil Lennon’s ill-fated second reign as manager.

The hope is that this is only the beginning, with a likely return to the Champions League next season hugely exciting, not to mention the possibility of new signings that it could attract.

Celtic’s team spirit has increasingly stood out as the season has gone on, as illustrated by the Furuhashi example above, and it is clear that this is a group of players all pulling the same direction. As Campbell has hinted, success can only be achieved if you have that harmony within your group.

In other news, one pundit has dropped a worrying Celtic transfer claim. Read more here.

James Maddison would "suit Tottenham"

Tottenham Hotspur’s quest to find a new attacking playmaker should see them turn to James Maddison this summer.

During a recent interview with reporters, manager Antonio Conte hinted at the fact that a no.10 could be high on the agenda during the off-season and the Leicester City gem would surely be an ideal candidate.

Earlier this month, The Sun claimed that Spurs had entered the race – alongside arch-rivals Arsenal – to sign the Englishman, who could be sold by the Foxes in a bid to bolster other areas of Brendan Rodgers’ playing squad.

Maddison is thought to be valued in the region of £60m, as per the report, and he has since been backed as a player that would suit the Lilywhites and the Italian head coach.

“He’s a very intelligent attacking player. He scores goals, gets loads of assists, and he’s a player Tottenham have been crying out for,” former Leeds striker-turned-pundit Noel Whelan told Football Insider.

“They got Giovani Lo Celso after Christian Eriksen left – that never worked out. They’re really missing that midfield player who has an eye for a killer pass.

“He’s proved he can do it in the Premier League by being a very important piece of the puzzle for Leicester.

“I think he would suit Tottenham down to the ground. With that front three in front of him, they could go to the next level with him.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Indeed, the north London outfit have lacked that true attacking midfielder to sit in the hole behind the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, and given his experience and current form in the top-flight, there won’t be many better candidates than Maddison.

As per Transfermarkt, the 25-year-old maestro has delivered 14 goals and nine assists across 45 appearances in all competitions this season, averaging a direct contribution once every 126 minutes, which is better than the figures Eriksen put up before his departure.

The Dane scored or assisted every 152 minutes in a Spurs shirt, whilst the bulk of Conte’s creativity has come from the usual suspects – the aforementioned attacking duo, who have combined for 14 assists alone.

Pairing Maddison with the likes of Kane, Son and winter arrival Dejan Kulusevski has got to be a mouthwatering prospect with the Leicester star once being dubbed a “special talent” by The Times’ Henry Winter.

Just like Eriksen, the £45m-rated dynamo could also provide Conte with a major threat from set-pieces, having drawn a great deal of inspiration from one of the best to ever do it, David Beckham, growing up.

An average of 1.4 key passes per game across the Premier League, Europa League and Carabao Cup this season further highlights his creative ability and it’s one that could see Kane and co absolutely thrive upfront.

So, on the above evidence, sporting director Fabio Paratici and Tottenham’s recruitment team would be foolish to not consider the Foxes gem heading into next season.

Just as Whelan suggests, he could be the perfect fit for what Spurs need this summer.

AND in other news, Spurs can complete Conte’s frightening trio with swoop for £33m-rated “absolute beast”…

Leeds: Pete O’Rourke makes Whites transfer claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has made an off-field Leeds United transfer claim involving Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta, GiveMeSport report.

The Lowdown: Relegation battle

The Whites have made good progress in recent weeks under Marsch, picking up 10 points from a possible 12. Wins over Norwich, Wolves and Watford have left Leeds nine points clear of the bottom three with just six games to go.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Despite the club not knowing what division they’ll be playing in next season, it looks as if Leeds chiefs are already making a head start on their transfer plans.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Marsch and Orta met last week prior to the win at Watford to discuss the profile of players they want to target this summer.

O’Rourke, talking to GiveMeSport after that news, had this to say about the club’s off-field plans, believing everyone is on the same page. He believes ‘talks are ongoing right now’ ahead of the summer window, name-checking Marsch and Orta as being ‘heavily involved’.

“Everybody is sort of singing from the same tune right now to try and improve this Leeds United side now they’re looking closer and closer to safety in the Premier League.

“I’m sure talks are ongoing right now to see where they’re going to bolster the squad in the transfer market this summer with Orta and Jesse Marsch both heavily involved.”

The Verdict: What areas need bolstering?

Reports have suggested that Orta could be a busy man this summer ahead of Marsch’s first full season in charge.

Leeds expect to lose Raphinha, who has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, but could bring in a new winger, striker, central midfielder and full-back.

Marsch inherited a small squad from Marcelo Bielsa, and despite a number of promising U23’s coming through at Thorp Arch, senior additions appear to be needed as Leeds look to ensure they aren’t in a relegation battle next year, providing they guarantee a third season in the Premier League over the coming weeks.

In other news: ‘Big’ – Journalist excited by who Orta and Marsch may now ‘bring’ to Leeds this summer.

Ashes loom but Australia must remain focused

As Ricky Ponting walked through the MCC Museum at Lord’s on Monday, he passed within metres of the Ashes urn. He was on his way to face the TV cameras ahead of a neutral series against Pakistan but in an Ashes year, how could he not have one eye on regaining the greatest prize in Australian cricket? The tiny trophy was right there in front of him, taunting him, yet he must wait four months before it is up for grabs.Between now and November, Australia have four Tests to put themselves into an Ashes-winning frame of mind. They have made a good start, having won seven of their eight Tests since leaving England empty-handed last year. Stumbling against Pakistan, who haven’t beaten them in a Test in nearly 15 years, would be a massive snag in their plans. For that reason, Ponting has his sights set firmly on stopping Shahid Afridi, the new Pakistan captain, from having any influence on the game. In a side without Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan, Afridi is the undisputed leader of a young group. He claims to have restored the unity of the team but Ponting knows that if Afridi fails on the field, so might his colleagues.”From an outsider’s point of view at the moment it looks as though they’re sort of running a bit off him,” Ponting said. “I think a lot of their younger blokes look up to him and he’s their leader, the bloke they go to when they need something to happen, so it’s pretty much like every captain of every side is. We always talk about trying to nullify the captain and take the captain down early and we’ll try and do that in this series as well, there’s no doubt about that.”Equally, while Australia are keen to shut down a new-look Pakistan, they also want to try some fresh ideas themselves. Steven Smith will audition for an Ashes role, Tim Paine will gain valuable experience in case he is required again in the near future and Michael Clarke will be promoted to No. 4, a shift that will remain in place for the Ashes. The move up the order for Clarke is a significant step for the man most likely to be Australia’s next Test captain, and potentially their No. 3 when Ponting eventually retires. Over the past year, Clarke has been Australia’s leading Test run scorer while Michael Hussey, who is heading down to No. 5, has sometimes looked scratchy when exposed to the new ball.”It’s just about how well he’s played,” Ponting said of Clarke. “I think his game is very well suited to higher up the order against the new ball, probably a bit more than what Hussey’s is right at the moment. That’s the reason. He has been our most consistent player and that’s been in pretty much all conditions around the world.”The last Ashes series over here he showed that at different times and in challenging times when the ball was moving around quite a bit, that he can do the job up the order. He has developed his game nicely over the last couple of years and hence when you have those guys who are playing that well, we all know they need to be batting as soon as possible, so that’s why he’s moved up an extra spot.”It’s a change that was made with the Ashes in mind. In England last year, Clarke was comfortably Australia’s leading scorer and not surprisingly, they want to get the most out of him in the return battle. The two Tests at Lord’s and Headingley, in addition to the two Tests in India in October, will also provide some insight into Australia’s bowling ahead of the Ashes.Ben Hilfenhaus is back after a long bout of knee tendonitis, which kept him out of all but the first Test of Australia’s home summer, while Smith’s ability as a Test-class spinner will be closely monitored. If he shows enough promise in England, and in India if given the chance, he could threaten Nathan Hauritz come the first Test at the Gabba. All in all, Ponting sees the next two weeks as a valuable building block towards Ashes redemption.”It absolutely is,” he said. “But we’re not solely focused on November. We’ve got a lot of cricket to play before then. I see this as a great opportunity for the young guys to gain some more experience about Test cricket. It’s the true form of the game, it’s the game that tests you out the most, so we’re going to be learning a lot about our players in not only this game but every game we play before the start of the Ashes.”Australia should remain too strong for Pakistan but if they cast their gaze too far ahead, their building block could turn into a stumbling block.
