Sheffield Wednesday fans blast Adam Reach after Blackburn defeat

Sheffield Wednesday suffered just their second defeat of Garry Monk’s reign on Saturday afternoon as Blackburn Rovers came from behind to snatch all three points.

The Owls must have thought they had won the match when substitute Jacob Murphy headed home from close range after Steven Fletcher had hit the crossbar seven minutes from time.

But the home side fired two goals in the final three minutes to secure the victory at Ewood Park.

Wednesday had late chances to salvage a point as Fernando Forestieri hit the crossbar, and Sam Hutchinson’s subsequent follow-up was well saved by Christian Walton.

Several of the Hillsborough faithful have taken to social media following the match, and they appear to have aimed fire at Adam Reach for his role in the defeat.

One supporter believes the 26-year-old needs to be dropped for their game against Swansea City next weekend while another fan was left bewildered by what Reach actually offered the team.

A further member of the visiting support called for Monk to add a winger in January to replace him with one more labelling him ‘terrible.’

Charlton fans react to Conor Gallagher’s international call-up

Charlton Athletic have started the 2019/20 Championship campaign in impressive form to rise to 10th in the table following their promotion-winning season from League One, and some of the club’s fanbase have been reacting to an international call-up for one of their star performers.

Conor Gallagher, 19, has been promoted to the England U21 squad ahead of games against Slovenia and Austria over the October international break.

The Addicks have acquired some decent Premier League talent on loan in recent years, including the likes of Josh Cullen, Ben Purrington and Krystian Bielik, and it appears Gallagher is simply the latest in a number of loanee success stories at the Valley.

The striker has scored four goals and registered one assist in 11 Championship appearances for Charlton this season.

Some fans have been responding to the news that their latest academy prospect is set to feature for Aidy Boothroyd’s side over the next fortnight.

Man Utd star David de Gea’s stinging comments a real eye-opener

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to Sky Sports, David de Gea has admitted Manchester United’s current struggles are the worst it has ever been in his time at the club.

What did he say?

The Red Devils have endured a miserable start to the current campaign, finding themselves in twelfth place with just nine points from their opening eight Premier League games.

Following their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon, De Gea delivered a withering assessment of just where United stand at the moment.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

When asked what is going wrong at the club, the Spaniard said: “Everything. I think a lot of things need to improve. They were the better team today. I don’t know what to say, really. Just keep trying, keep fighting, keep improving every day. It’s a hard moment for us, a difficult moment, but we are United and we need to keep fighting.

“Probably the worst time, most difficult time, since I’ve been here. I don’t know. I don’t know what is happening. Come on, we cannot score even one goal in two games. Sorry to the fans. We will keep fighting for sure, we will come back, but at the moment we are in a difficult situation. It’s a hard moment for us. The most difficult time since I’ve been here. I don’t know why or what is happening.”

Eye-opener

Hearing De Gea come out with such a powerful statement on United’s woes really puts into perspective how quickly the club have fallen in recent times. The Spain international was there for the Premier League title triumph back in 2013, and is in a better position than most, to really see the painful differences that exists.

It’s fair to say the goalkeeper didn’t mince his words when it came to what he felt is going wrong at Old Trafford. But his “we cannot score even one goal in two games” line really hit home. The 28-year-old has to watch on as the rest of his teammates fluff their lines, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must heed the words of one of his main stars. More emphasis on attacking football, and an absolute necessity to sort out their striker problems in January.

Wolves’ Meritan Shabani could prove a viable rotation option this term

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

One of Wolves’ summer arrivals could be on the fringes of the first-team sometime soon, that’s according to their Under-23 manager Rob Edwards.

What’s he said?

The west Midlands club signed Meritan Shabani on a three-year contract from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for their youth team, and it appears he’s already been impressing.

The 20-year-old made three senior appearances in Bavaria, two coming in the league and has been capped at Under-20 level for Germany.

His arrival was undoubtedly part of Fosun’s plans to improve the youth setup at the club.

In four Premier League 2 matches this season, the midfielder has scored one goal, shining in the eyes of Edwards, who said:

“Meritan is showing more and more quality all the time, every day.

“We’re excited to have him in the building.

“He’ll get more and more used to English football the longer he’s here, that’s obvious, but we’re really pleased with how he’s performed.”

A viable alternative?

Wolves will surely look to rotate their squad throughout the season, having pulled out all the stops to make the Europa League group stage.

If they advance into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals then two games a week will become normality, if it hasn’t already, as they continue on into 2020.

Joao Moutinho is the club’s only true out-and-out number ten, and his absence against Everton was painstakingly clear, as we have previously highlighted this week.

The form of Shabani for the youth team should at some point catch the eye of Santo, which could give him an alternative option in that role, instead of trying to force his defensive-minded midfielders to play the same way.

The 20-year-old had enough quality to feature in a couple of Bundesliga matches, so he should be able to handle a step up from English youth football to the Premier League.

Crystal Palace prospect Nikola Tavares hails Stephen Henderson’s influence

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Crystal Palace prodigy Nikola Tavares has heaped praise on summer signing Stephen Henderson for his impact on the younger players at Selhurst Park.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper signed for the Eagles on a season-long deal this summer as the south Londoners’ new third-choice stopper, after club legend Julian Speroni departed at the end of the last campaign.

Naturally, Henderson is yet to play a competitive first-team game, instead spending time with Richard Shaw’s Under-23 side, and Tavares – who started on the bench in Palace’s 5-3 win over Bournemouth last term – has heaped praise on the former Charlton Athletic man.

What did he say?

Tavares told football.london: “Hendo [Stephen Henderson] for example is good at communicating and he’s not afraid to tell you when he thinks you’re not doing something right, which is exactly what most of us need.

“Once he says it to you or if he gives you some advice on the pitch then you feel like you can pass that to someone else.”Figure of fun amongst some Palace fansAs with any third-choice goalkeeper coming through the door, their arrival can seem a bit pointless. This summer however, some Palace fans mocked Henderson after he conceded six goals on his debut in a pre-season friendly, with some also poking fun at Dougie Freedman for signing him before finding a much-needed new striker or a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who left for Manchester United. While Henderson hasn’t had much, if any, impact on the first-team – it’s not like he was signed to, anyway – it is clear that he is having a positive effect on the younger players at the club, which is probably the most you can ask for from him.His arrival may have seemed pointless, but the younger players need leaders to guide them.Henderson has already shown that he is up to that task.

Crystal Palace fans react as Andros Townsend fails to make the Puskas shortlist

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed that Andros Townsend had missed out on a spot in the final three in the race for the Puskas goal of the year award.

The England international was a nominee for the award thanks to his scorching strike against Manchester City at the Etihad back in December, as the Eagles pulled off a shock 3-2 win over the champions on their own turf.

Townsend watched the ball drop out of the sky before rifling a first-time volley into the top right-hand corner, and given the quality of the strike, he is unlucky to miss out on a place in the final three.

One fan said that Townsend’s exclusion from the shortlist is a ‘travesty of justice’, whilst another thinks it’s a ‘disgrace’ that the Palace No.10 is no longer in the running for the award.

Let’s take a look at a few more replies from the Palace supporters on Twitter…

Everton fans are gutted as Idrissa Gueye’s move to PSG edges closer

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Everton fans on Twitter are gutted after learning of the latest development in Idrissa Gueye’s future.

It was a well known fact that the Senegal international wanted a move to Paris Saint-Germain back in January – Gueye handed in a transfer request as he attempted to force a move to the French capital.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

However, Everton rejected the Parisians’ offer of £25m and forced the 5 foot 9 midfielder to stay.

Now, however, both clubs appear to have settled on a sum of £28m for the 29-year-old, who looks all but gone as it has also been reported that agreeing personal terms with the Ligue 1 champions shouldn’t pose a problem at all.

The Goodison Park faithful are understandably gutted at the news, as they prepare to say goodbye to the man who won the Players’ Player of the Season award for his efforts last term.

Let’s take a look at how the Everton fans on Twitter reacted to the news…

Everton’s ‘priority’ signing Malcom is much better than David Neres

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…According to RMC Sport journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi, Everton will send an offer in excess of €35m (£31.4m) to Barcelona in a bid to bring Malcom to the club.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the tweet from Bouhafsi states that Toffees boss Marco Silva sees the Brazilian winger as a ‘priority’ signing this summer.

Arsenal have also been linked with the former Bordeaux forward, and have been in discussions with the player’s entourage – no official offer has been submitted by the Gunners as of yet.

The 22-year-old didn’t feature much for Barcelona last season, making just 15 La Liga appearances whilst scoring one goal and recording two assists.

Thogden challenged himself to DM 100 footballers on Instagram. Find out who replied in the video below…

He has endured something of a nightmare spell at the Camp Nou since arriving last summer, struggling for game time – Malcom has made just 24 appearances in total.

Better than David Neres when given the chance

Everton have also been linked with a move for Ajax sensation David Neres.

Judging by Malcom’s stats last season for Barcelona in comparison to Neres’ for Ajax, you could argue that the latter is far better.

Eight goals and eight assists in the league compared to Malcom’s one goal and two assists doesn’t bode well for the Barcelona No.14, but that was whilst he was struggling for game-time.

In his last season at Bordeaux, Malcom shone and outperformed Neres’ fantastic campaign last term by some distance.

In Ligue 1, a division that UEFA’s European league coefficient rankings suggests is a higher standard than the Eredivisie, Malcom hit 12 goals and seven assists in his breakthrough year, whilst having 2.1 shots per game, making 2.5 key passes per game, 2.7 dribbles per game and winning a huge 2.6 fouls per game from 35 appearances.

To compare that with Neres’ 2018/19 campaign – his own breakout year – the 22-year-old hit eight goals and eight assists, had 1.7 shots per game, made 1.1 key passes per game, 1.8 dribbles per game and was fouled once per game on average in 29 appearances.

These numbers show that Malcom can perform much better when given a consistent run of game time in a league that is supposedly tougher than the Dutch top-flight, and reinforces the fact that Malcom may be a better option in the market for Everton instead of Neres.

Manchester United fans react to reports of Solskjaer upping pre-season intensity

[ad_pod ]

After a disappointing end to the campaign last season saw them finish with a draw and defeat to already-relegated Huddersfield and Cardiff respectively, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has seemingly been intent on revamping Manchester United this summer.

The Red Devils have already sealed deals for young stars Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whilst the club are still pursuing a big-money move for Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire.

But whilst the club continue to try and make waves in the transfer market, Solskjaer is reportedly keen on rectifying some of his side’s problems on the pitch too.

The Evening Standard claim that United’s players have been put through double sessions this summer, with a clear focus on running and fitness, and a major change in intensity from the last pre-season under Jose Mourinho.

The report adds that Solskjaer wants his side to rival the high-energy game being utilised by rivals Liverpool and Manchester City and feels fitness could be the key to closing the gap to the Premier League’s top two.

After hearing the news, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Solskjaer’s new training regime and many were seemingly very impressed.

Some Red Devils supporters appeared to take a shot at former manager Jose Mourinho and his defensive tactics and praised Solskjaer for trying to fix that with a more intense approach.

Indeed, many United fans revealed their excitement for the new season and insisted that a lack of fitness was a major reason behind some of their disappointing performances last year.

The Chalkboard: David Turnbull can be Celtic’s long-awaited Stuart Armstrong replacement

[ad_pod ]

Motherwell announced on Wednesday evening that Celtic have agreed a fee for the transfer of midfielder David Turnbull this summer.

The teenage prospect is set to become the Steelmen’s most expensive export ever after a sensational 2018/19 season that saw him light up the Scottish Premiership with exciting attacking midfield play.

Neil Lennon already has a number of options available in the middle of the park, many of whom are established in the squad as big personalities and guaranteed starters.

Interesting then to consider where Turnbull might fit in next term and how much game time Celtic fans can expect from him.

How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…

On the chalkboard

As noted, it’s the attacking output of Turnbull that has wowed pundits and fans in Scottish football over the last 12 months.

The 19-year-old made his debut for the club in the 2017/18 season but it was last term that he really made the breakthrough, appearing 31 times across the season.

With 15 goals and six assists, not many players delivered that level of direct goal contribution and considering it was effectively his rookie season it was doubly impressive.

Celtic of course rarely lack for goals but his tally even compares favourably to players such as Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor despite both playing in a more attack-minded team surrounded by better players.

Turnbull became the fulcrum around which the Steelmen’s entire attacking game was played – a player not afraid to run beyond the striker and latch onto balls in the box.

Armstrong replacement

Celtic sold Stuart Armstrong to Southampton last summer and failed to really replace him in the transfer market. His goal threat and uncanny ability to drift into dangerous areas off the ball became a key weapon during Brendan Rodgers’ first two seasons.

Ryan Christie performed a similar role when he broke into the team last term but there didn’t seem to be much design about that, the player simply forced his way into contention despite being sidelined consistently by Rodgers.

Turnbull will be expected to perform a similar role to both when he does get chances in the first-team. Direct movement, composure on the ball and a lethal finishing ability in and around the box will be what Lennon is after.

With energy and ambition he has the ability to change games coming off the bench or offer much-needed relief to the likes of Tom Rogic around international breaks and European schedules.

A target of 30 games for the player would be reasonable from both the club and Turnbull’s perspective and Lennon shouldn’t be afraid to utilise him in domestic competition.

Despite his young age, he’s already demonstrated he’s good enough.
