Liverpool considering Millar sale

A major update has emerged on £3k-p/w ace Liam Millar, it could lead to Charlton re-igniting their interest in an exciting attacker.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic, as relayed by Football League World this week, Liverpool could look to offload Millar in the summer transfer window to raise funds for signings of their own. Millar spent the second half of last season on loan to Charlton in League One and could now be sold by the Reds as they look to cash in on his recent form for the Addicks.

Earlier this year, Charlton boss Nigel Adkins labelled Millar as a talented player and said that he is still learning and working on his decision-making in the final third. He told London News Online:

“He’s a young player learning his way. What we’re trying to do is get good, talented players in the final third of the pitch. From a game point of view, we’ve achieved that. Then it’s can we win some more corners, throw-ins, free-kicks, get at him drive into the penalty box. And then it’s final delivery, put the ball in the box.

“All part of his learning and development. As a team we’ve tried to put him in that area of the pitch, so we’ve achieved that. We’re trying to get talented players the ball and they’ve got to make the decisions and go and do that bit of magic. I’m sure we’ll sit down and reflect on it, talk about some of the different things and just help him so when we get in them positions again he can just keep improving.”

Get it done

Charlton must aim to complete a deal to bring Liam Millar back to the club. He is already accustomed to Charlton’s style of play and knows what Adkins wants from his side, because of his stint at The Valley on loan, and this means that he could be able to hit the ground running next season. So, Charlton should join the race to sign Millar permanently and attempt to win the battle for his signature, taking advantage of Liverpool’s stance.

If Charlton have the opportunity to bring Millar back on a long-term contract then they need to act now and secure his services. Millar impressed during his spell at the club on loan, with two goals and six assists from the wing for Adkins’ team. He averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.37 in eight starts as a left midfielder and 7.06 in 10 starts as a left forward. This shows that he was able to shine within Adkins’ system and that he could be an excellent player for Charlton in League One next season.

Millar, £3k-per-week ace, arriving for a second spell with Charlton could also be a huge boost for Adkins. The former Saints boss admitted in the aforementioned quotes that he wants to work with Millar to improve his game. This move would afford Adkins time to coach Millar over the course of several seasons to personally oversee his development and make sure that he fulfils his potential. Therefore, Adkins would love it if the club could go back in for Millar and Charlton should look to strike an agreement with Liverpool.

Celtic: Reporter shares Postecolgou’s Hoops response

Ange Postecolgou has been asked if he’s been offered the chance to become Celtic’s new manager by reporter Dan Orlowitz.

The Lowdown: A busy few days…

Celtic’s search for a new permanent boss has taken plenty of twists and turns in recent months, however, the last few days have been manic.

The Hoops were thought to be closing in on Eddie Howe, only to see a deal dramatically collapse on Friday afternoon due to budget, backroom staff and personal issues.

Hours on from the development, Celtic were thought to be in advanced talks with Postecolgou, who took charge of Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos on Sunday.

The Latest: Postecolgou’s response

Postecolgou guided Yokohama F. Marinos to a 2-1 win over Shimizu S-Pulse to take the club 15 points behind leaders Kawasaki.

As to be expected, he was asked about a potential move to Scotland after the game. This is what Orlowitz posted on Sunday morning, admitting the 55-year-old refused to comment on a move to Parkhead and insisted he was focused on his role with Yokohama F. Marinos.

“BREAKING: In response to my questions, Ange Postecolgou won’t comment on whether or not he’s been offered Celtic job, says he’s focused on his current job at Marinos.”

The Verdict: Not a surprise…

It’s not a shock to see Postecolgou batting off any questions regarding Celtic without a real answer.

It seems as if he may well be the man in the Celtic Park hot seat next season, though, and a deal for the Australian could prove to be a huge gamble by the Hoops board.

Fergal Harkin, who looks set to become the club’s new director of football, maybe the driving force behind a move for Postecolgou. Yokohama are part of the City Football Group, so Harkin, Manchester City’s football partneerships manager, likely knows him very well.

Considering Howe appeared to be Celtic’s main target for a number of weeks, a move for Postecolgou has appeared to gather pace quickly, but after the Howe disaster, the new candidate keeping his cards close to his chest is a good thing.

The Hoops have reportedly been tracking Postecolgou for months, so it seems as if they know just what they’ll be getting, however, it’s obvious he was never the club’s first choice, so it’ll be interesting to see how he may fare in Scotland.

South Africa level series at 1-1

The high-quality fielding and the controlled bowling the West Indies exhibited at Sabina Park last weekend were nowhere to be seen at the Antigua Recreation Ground here yesterday. The batting was also not exactly up to par for the first phase of play, but for 60 overs, at least, the West Indies remained competitive. The rest of the afternoon, however, was one-way traffic and South Africa sped to an emphatic victory by eight wickets with 25 balls in reserve to level the Cable & Wireless series at 1-1.Once Nixon McClean, always one to struggle with his accuracy, came into the attack with South Africa on 40 for one in search of 221 from 50 overs, he served up a handful of loose, innocuous deliveries that were predictably punished. The 25 runs he gave away from two overs simply set Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis on their way to a big, record century partnership and the intensity of West Indians on the field appeared to have been significantly reduced.Gibbs negotiated the early tight stuff from Cameron Cuffy before unleashing a series of commanding strokes on route to his fourth 100 (103 off 141 balls) in One-Day Internationals. His Western Province teammate Kallis was just as convincing and was unbeaten on 78 when the target was reached for the loss of just two wickets.”It was disappointing,” captain Carl Hooper said after the West Indies’ first defeat in five matches at the ARG.”I don’t think we batted as well as we could have. The first 25 overs were a bit too slow. Looking at the wicket, it was probably more a 250-260 wicket. The South Africans showed us it was a good track to bat on.”Hooper was also not happy with the bowling.”We expect one of the bowlers to have a bad day, but too many guys had poor days. We’ve got to be a bit more consistent if we want to beat South Africa,” he said.”We definitely could have shown a lot more urgency and a lot more consistency in the field as well,” coach Roger Harper added.McLean’s first ball was pulled by four by Gibbs over mid-wicket, the second slapped over point for another boundary and his fourth hooked over long-leg for another four. The syrup he dished out virtually negated the fantastic opening spell by Cameron Cuffy. Impeccably consistent with his immaculate line and occasional awkward bounce, Cuffy gained an early breakthrough with a delivery that moved and took the inside edge of Gary Kirsten’s bat before going onto the stumps.Cuffy’s control was matched by left-arm spinner Neil McGarrell, but the other West Indies bowlers were disappointing. After the onslaught against McLean, nothing troubled Gibbs and Kallis in their second-wicket stand of 179, the highest South African partnership in the 20 One-Day Internationals between the two countries, the highest partnership on the ground and the highest South African second-wicket stand in 225 matches of this type.West Indies’ fielding could not repeat the standard it set in Jamaica. When Gibbs was on 56, he should have been run out, but Chris Gayle opted to rifle a return from point directly to the stumps when the safe hands of wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs was a better option. And Jacobs himself, whose mistakes behind the stumps have been few this season, dropped Gibbs off Marlon Samuels’ off-spin when the batsman was 76.Even then, the West Indies were in with a faint chance with 84 runs still needed off the last 90 balls. In a jiffy four sixes were carted out of the ground from the West Indies’ spin combination of Hooper, Samuels and Chris Gayle. At the half-way stage of their innings, the West Indies were 76 for one and didn’t seem likely to get their eventual total. It was a start-stop process for the most part, and they required lusty hitting from Shivnarine Chanderpaul and an almost equally destructive Carl Hooper to boost their fortunes in a fifth-wicket stand of 85 in 13 overs.Chanderpaul, included only because of Ricardo Powell’s right thigh strain, finally showed the form that has eluded him all season in an innings of 60 off 54 balls. While the more distinguished hitters like Brian Lara and Gayle were outfoxed in trying to despatch Lance Klusener over the top, Chanderpaul made it look simple. In successive overs, Klusener was clobbered onto the sightscreen and lifted over mid-wicket for sixes. When Allan Donald, an impressive first-spell performer, was recalled, he too was carted over mid-wicket for Chanderpaul’s third six that triggered wild scenes among a crowd of about 9 000.But just when he was in full flow and seemingly about to provide a final flurry in the last seven overs, he was run out in attempting a non-existent second run to square-leg that gained no response from Hooper. The West Indies captain duly took it the cue with a few meaty blows, including a straight six off Jacques Kallis and a couple of lofted off-side drives.Hooper’s dismissal for 48 off 46 balls virtually ended the West Indies’ flow of runs. He was the first of four wickets that fell in the last 20 balls that brought only 10 runs.Gayle provided the early impetus with an even half-century, but while he was flowing, his fellow Jamaican Leon Garrick and Lara took up too many dot balls.Garrick, who suggested he would be run out anytime, eventually fell that way after struggling to 16 off 61 balls, while Lara could not deliver something special on his 32nd birthday and needed 38 balls for his 13. The pair were especially contained by Donald and Kallis.

Everton linked with Roma winger Pedro

Everton are reportedly interested in signing Pedro from Roma this summer, but it would be a huge mistake by Marcel Brands to bring him to Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

According to Italian news outlet CalcioMercato, Everton are keen on signing the 33-year-old this summer as they look to add to their quality out wide.

It is suggested that Carlo Ancelotti is a long-term admirer of the former Barcelona man, so whether or not Everton will still be interested should the Italian return to Real Madrid ahead of next season remains to be seen.

Would he be a good signing?

Pedro was an excellent player in his prime, impressing with both Barcelona and Chelsea before moving to Roma on a free transfer last summer after his contract at Stamford Bridge expired.

However, he will turn 34 ahead of next season and still has two years left on his contract with the Giallorossi, so it would be a mistake by Everton to spend a fee on bringing him back to the Premier League.

The 2019/20 campaign saw Pedro make just eight starts for Chelsea in the top flight, contributing one goal and one assist and earning a solid if uninspiring 6.78 average match rating from WhoScored.

This does little to suggest that he would be more of a success should he return to the Premier League with Everton this summer, especially after an injury-hit first campaign with the Serie A side.

The former Spain international made 27 appearances in Italy’s top flight this term, contributing five goals and two assists and averaging a less than impressive 6.67 average rating from WhoScored for his performances.

It would be a strange decision by Everton to allow 32-year-old Theo Walcott to join Southampton on a free transfer before bringing in an older, more injury-prone replacement such as Pedro. Whilst the Spaniard has enjoyed an illustrious career, he managed just 29 Premier League goals during his five years at Chelsea (5.8 per season) and is now way past his best.

Walcott’s Premier League goal return of 78 in 15 years is broadly similar (5.2 per season), while many Everton fans seemed less than devastated when reports first emerged in April about the Saints potentially making his loan move a permanent one.

If the Toffees wanted to have an experienced option on the wing in their squad for next season, they may  been better off keeping Walcott rather than signing the £6.75m-rated Pedro.

Time’s surely up for Erik Lamela at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur need a clear-out, whoever is in charge next season.

The Lilywhites have regressed drastically since making the Champions League final in 2019 and a lot of the same players that let Mauricio Pochettino down in his final six months in charge are still at the club today.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy must help his next manager by offloading deadwood. By doing this, he could well raise some extra funds for a much-needed freshen-up to the squad.

One name who appears to be most at risk is Erik Lamela.

A lot has been made about his future but most recently, respected Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla hinted that a return to the Serie A could be on the cards.

Speaking to Arena Napoli last month, he said:

“Lamela and his wife have the same desire: to return to Italy. Lamela, in all likelihood, at the end of the current football season, will leave Tottenham to try a new experience. He wants to join an important club.”

Whilst back in March, the Evening Standard reported that Bologna were hot on his case and would look to sign him in the summer.

The 29-year-old winger will enter the final year of his deal and it’s hard to envisage him getting an extension, nor does he deserve or warrant one.

It’s rather hilarious that he was signed as Gareth Bale’s replacement for €30m (£26m) back in 2013, yet the Welshman has since come back and done more than he ever has for the club.

Bale has bagged 14 goals and three assists despite largely playing a bit-part role – in fact, he’s directly contributed towards one goal every 90.4 minutes, as per Transfermarkt.

In 177 appearances, Lamela has only scored 17 times for Spurs and has never delivered more than five assists in any Premier League campaign. He has probably spent more time on the treatment table than on the pitch, too.

As of last month, the Argentine was said to have missed 135 matches through injury, including a hip problem that kept him out for 13 months.

Considering he’s earning around £85k-per-week, you could argue that he’s stolen a living from the North London outfit for the majority of his career here.

To put it into context, Bale has returned for one season and is only three goals off Lamela’s total tally for Spurs. He has also spent 43% of his time out injured.

Check out the latest transfer news on Lamela via the GMS Live football Transfer hub

We’ve seen moments of sheer brilliance from him, bagging that sensational rabona goal against Arsenal but also moments of absolute stupidity. He again tried the trick but this time it was with his team 3-1 down against Leeds, leading to BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand slamming him (via football.london).

“The goal against Arsenal was fabulous and we were all drooling over it. But you’re 3-1 down at this moment, he tries this pass,” he said. “But the more important thing was the reaction from all the players in Spurs shirts. I was looking for somebody to get onto him, to say: ‘What the hell are you doing? We’re 3-1 down. Play normal’, that tells me a lot.”

It’s not the first time Lamela has been blasted for his actions either.

Earlier this season, Graeme Souness labelled him “pathetic” live on Sky Sports for his role in getting Antony Martial sent off during Spurs 6-1 whitewash at Old Trafford.

Now valued just shy of £14.5m by Transfermarkt, this could well – and should be – the final few games that we witness Lamela in a Tottenham shirt.

Whatever Levy can get this summer, he should take it and run.

Man Utd Predicted XI vs Liverpool

Manchester United will be aiming to extend Manchester City’s wait for the Premier League title as they take on Liverpool at Old Trafford today.

Pep Guardiola’s men will be crowned as champions if the Red Devils fall to defeat against their great rivals so there is even more motivation for them to claim victory against the Reds.

Considering that then, how many changes could United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer be tempted to make from the 6-2 thumping of AS Roma in Europa League action midweek?

We are expecting just two changes from the Norwegian for the clash – neither of them being much of a surprise.

Dean Henderson should be recalled to take his place between the sticks having seen David De Gea start on Thursday evening. The former Sheffield United loanee has started each of the last seven Premier League matches for the Red Devils.

Elsewhere, he should be shielded by an unchanged back four of Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

There should also not be any changes from the defensive midfield pairing of Fred and Scott McTominay.

After his two goals against AS Roma, Bruno Fernandes is once again sure to take his place in a slightly more advanced position.

Meanwhile, there should be a slight tweek to the attack. Edinson Cavani is sure to start after his two goal and three assist haul in midweek and will once again be supported by Marcus Rashford.

Mason Greenwood should come into the starting line-up though at the expense of the £54m-rated Paul Pogba.

The 19-year-old appears back to his best form having hit six goals since the start of March in all competitions for Manchester United.

AND in more news, take a look at why Mason Greenwood simply must start for the Red Devils against Liverpool today…

West Ham fans discuss signing a free agent

Flocking in response to ExWHUemployee’s tweet, which explained how West Ham could only potentially sign a free agent as an emergency addition to cope with Michail Antonio’s injury, plenty of Irons supporters erupted in discussion on social media.

Antonio has suffered a hamstring injury which could see him miss the rest of the season, coming after scans revealed it is much worse than first feared by club doctors (The Guardian).

Given West Ham’s failure to sign a striker in January, supporters are understandably concerned over the lack of forward options – with one Hammer asking Ex if there is any way the club can acquire a striker from outside the Premier League on loan until the end of the season.

In response, the club insider relayed the only thing West Ham could potentially do is bring in a free agent – which has prompted discussion from Irons.

Many theorised who is available, including Diafra Sakho, whilst others implored the club against it as a possible option.

“Diego Costa for me would be awesome. Give him a bonus if we qualify for CL.”

“Bowen is perfectly capable of playing the role and if he got injured as well we could use benrahma in that front 3 with Jesse and Fornals and have them interchange. People suggesting getting a player in on a free don’t realise that by the time he’ll be match fit it’ll be too late”

“Tbh, I think Bowen playing upfront is not the end of the world just to get us to the end of the season. With Lingard, Benrahma and Fornals all playing off him it would be a very fluid, mobile forward line and he’d certainly get some decent service.”

“I see Diafra Sakho is available…”

“Daniel Sturridge, Diego Costa, Diafra Sakho, Wilfred Bony, Lacina Traore all free agents…surely just as back up, it’s worth getting someone in, even to sit on the bench for 2 or 3 games until match fit. Massive motivation for them to score a couple to get us into the CL!”
