Johnstone urges Rangers prospects to take their chances this summer

[ad_pod ]

Rangers legend Derek Johnstone is hoping to see some young players stake a claim to be members of Steven Gerrard’s first-team squad next season, speaking to The Evening Times.

What’s he said?

Rangers will soon be heading off for a ten day pre-season training camp in Portugal and if last year’s similar trip is anything to go by, plenty of youngsters will be making the trip too, to train alongside established first-team members.

Johnstone believes it’s the perfect chance for them to show the progress they have made in the club’s reserve and youth sides.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michael Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

As quoted by The Evening Times, he said:

“Steven Gerrard has always said that he will give his young players a game at Rangers if they can prove that they are good enough. That is the chance a few of them have at the training camp in Portugal and in the friendly fixtures we’ve got this summer.

The manager played down the importance of the kids winning the leagues and cups that they won last season, saying it was more about players coming through the ranks.

That is true. It won’t do the youngsters any harm having that mentality, though, because when you get to that first team you have to be a winner. It is a wonderful feeling when you are that age and you are winning for Rangers but the players want to do it up a level and they need to catch Steven’s eye this summer.”

Who’s closest to getting a chance?

Gerrard has already shown that youngsters like Glenn Middleton will get a first-team opportunity if they impress enough of the training pitch. The winger got plenty of game time in the first half of last season before falling out of favour at senior level.

The former Norwich player will be hoping he can impress again over the next few weeks, having looked back to his exciting best for the reserve side in the closing stages of last term.

Another out to impress will be striker Zak Rudden, who scored 12 goals in the Scottish Championship last term on loan at Falkirk and on Friday signed a new contract.

With others, such as Scottish Youth Cup final man of the match Josh McPake and reserves team captain Cammy Palmer, also showing good progress, Gerrard will have plenty of options to turn to in upcoming friendlies.

Rangers’ Jordan Jones earns rave reviews for Northern Ireland performance

[ad_pod ]

Rangers winger Jordan Jones has received plaudits from fans watching Northern Ireland’s away victory against Estonia on Saturday.

Michael O’Neill’s side made it three wins from three in Euro 2020 qualifying after coming from behind to secure a vital three points with a 2-1 win.

Incredibly, the country are top of their qualifying group ahead of Germany and the Netherlands, albeit having played a game more.

Check out what the Pl>ymaker FC squad got up to at the Football Blogging Awards in the video below…

Jones was a massive part of the win, coming off the bench midway through the second half to create multiple chances both for himself and his teammates, eventually providing the assist for Josh Magennis’ late winner with a low cross.

It’s a big sign he is ready to arrive at Rangers in pre-season and hit the ground running in Steven Gerrard’s squad, having signed a pre-contract in January.

With Ryan Kent heading back to parent club Liverpool this summer, the Gers will need a new dynamic presence on the left wing.

If Jones can recreate Saturday’s form on a regular basis, Rangers fans will be incredibly happy.

These supporters have taken to Twitter this weekend to share their thoughts on Jones’ international display…

Palace would be better fit than Spurs for Sessegnon

[ad_pod ]

According to Love Sport Radio, Crystal Palace are interested in Fulham winger and Spurs target Ryan Sessegnon.

What’s the deal, then?

The 19-year-old had his first taste of Premier League football during the 2018/19 campaign where he made 35 appearances for the west London side, contributing two goals and six assists.

And many clubs are interested in the young Englishman, with Inter Milan and Liverpool also said to be monitoring him closely.

Reportedly, Fulham value the under 21 international at £45million, but Spurs – with shrewd negotiator Daniel Levy at the helm – apparently believe he is worth just £25m.

And as a result of the lack of progress between Fulham and Tottenham, it is thought Palace may swoop in and steal Sessegnon from right under the Champions League finalists nose.

Sessegnon needs shallower waters before he can swim in the deep end

It is clear he has the ability to be one of the very best players in the Championship – he scored 16 goals and laid on eight assists while in the second tier with the Cottagers.

But there is no way of sugar-coating what was a drastically underwhelming season given he was only involved in eight goals and was even in and out of the team after the Christmas period.

There was definitely a bigger buzz around Sessegnon’s name coming off his season in the Championship than there is now, and that would not fare well for him at Spurs.

Let’s get it right, Mauricio Pochettino does have a knack of bringing through young English talent.

But that is only the case if you are capable at that high level – look at Andros Townsend, Tom Carroll, Ryan Mason, Aaron Lennon, Jake Livermore, Kyle Naughton – all of these were sold by the Argentine.

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

For that reason, in order for Sessegnon to build a confidence, a swagger that enables him to play with a freedom which was clearly lacking last season, Palace may just be the perfect fit.

He would find it easier to force his way into a starting position – even if that was at full-back when Wilfried Zaha is on the left of a front three.

A mid-table Premier League side is the natural progression in the youngster’s career – jumping into Champions League level competition could just harm his development and he may fall straight back down to where he was before – look at Zaha after all.

It is a less glamorous option, but sensibly speaking Sessegnon should seriously consider the Eagles if they make a formal offer.

Chelsea would be wasting Fikayo Tomori’s time by sending him on loan to Celtic

Given their transfer embargo, you can expect Chelsea to promote a few players from their loan army to the senior squad for the next campaign.

As things stand, though, it does not look like Fikayo Tomori will be one of them, with the 21-year-old continuing to be linked with another loan move.

Tomori, who has impressed at Derby County this season, is said to be a summer target for Celtic (Daily Record).

And given the confidence Maurizio Sarri has in David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger, it would not be a surprise to see the England U21 international depart Stamford Bridge temporarily again.

Needing regular minutes, from Tomori’s perspective, it would be the correct call, with Sarri unlikely to give him that.

That being said, a move to Celtic is probably not what the Chelsea academy product needs.

After such a strong campaign in the Championship, the next step for Tomori has to be the Premier League.

And while it would be a huge step up for the central defender, he looks more than ready for it with his strength, pace to make recovery tackles and composure on the ball.

A Chelsea loanee who has gone under the radar compared to others, he really could be the Blues’ secret weapon next season if Sarri gives him a chance, and the transfer ban makes it even more logical for the Italian to do just that.

A defensive partnership that involves Rudiger and Tomori would be daunting for any onrushing attackers, as their pace, power and tackling ability would make them a frightening combo.

With his ability, to move to a division as weak as the Scottish League would be a side or even arguably a backwards step.

At 21 and considering his talent, Tomori really needs to be playing in one of Europe’s top leagues now.

Alderweireld could make shock Ajax return this summer

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur central defender Toby Alderweireld has confirmed that he would like to return to Ajax, per Voetbal International.

What’s the word?

The Belgium international has a £25million release clause in his contract and speculation persists over his future.

He played a key role in Spurs’ victory over the Dutch club in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final and will surely play a part in the club’s clash with Liverpool in Madrid.

But he has now confirmed that he is considering the prospect of a fairytale return to the Dutch club, though it remains to be seen if such a move could happen this summer.

He said: “I don’t want to make too popular statements, but it is certainly 100 per cent in my head.

“I have had wonderful times here with three championships, but also lows. But my family was happy here too.”

A shock, but acceptable

This would be a shock.

Ajax don’t tend to spend big money on players and their current transfer record stands at just over £14m.

But a move for Alderweireld this summer would be palatable to all parties.

Spurs, obviously, lose one of their best players but he’s 30 and he doesn’t move to a Premier League rival, while Ajax sign one of the finest central defenders on the continent.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy does not have a say in the Belgian’s future, as a bid of £25m would force the club to negotiate.

But if he can convince the ace to make a dramatic return ato Ajax, fans are unlikely to grumble too much.

Arsenal fans keen to sign Brighton defender Lewis Dunk after display vs Tottenham

[ad_pod ]

Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back Lewis Dunk produced a heroic display as his side suffered late heartbreak in their 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, and his performance didn’t go unnoticed by Arsenal fans on Twitter.

For so long it looked as though the Seagulls were going to pick up a vital point in their Premier League survival bid – in a result that also would have helped the Gunners in their top-four bid – before they finally succumbed to Christian Eriksen’s 88th-minute winner.

Dunk certainly couldn’t have done any more in north London however, as the Seagulls skipper threw his body on the line time and time again for his team as Eriksen, Dele Alli, Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura all tried to find the net.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s defence has been inconsistent at times again this term – as shown by the 3-2 defeat against Crystal Palace on Sunday – with Shkodran Mustafi one of the players who seems to continually flatter to deceive and be the brunt of criticism from the Emirates Stadium faithful on social media.

Some Gunners supporters obviously feel that the heart of their backline is an area manager Unai Emery should look to strengthen during the close-season, with the fans below believing that the 6 ft 4 Brighton leader would be a good addition.

Are Man City better than Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’? Fans discuss in the video below…

While one individual described him as being “light-years ahead of Mustafi”, another said “Arsenal should be all over Lewis Dunk this summer”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Focus on yourselves: Manchester City fans slam Jurgen Klopp after his comments

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City fans on Twitter have been busy slamming Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, after the German commented on the manner of their victory over Fulham in comparison to his own side’s success over to Cottagers.

The Cityzens beat Scott Parker’s men 2-0 recently, whilst the Reds recorded a narrow 2-1 victory, and Klopp said: “They won 2-0 against Fulham. We won 2-1 against Fulham, because we made a mistake that we usually don’t make. Both City goals against Fulham came from errors but well done in those situations.”

442oons have charted the entire career of Man City’s main man Sergio Aguero through song in the hilarious video below…

There isn’t much animosity in what the former Borussia Dortmund boss said about Pep Guardiola’s side, although City fans haven’t taken too kindly to his words as they somewhat imply that City were gifted their goals against Fulham.

The main feeling from the City fanbase is that Klopp is feeling the pressure of this tense title race, although only the last few games of the season will determine that.

Just one point separated Liverpool and City at the top of the table going into the weekend in what is the most exciting title race in recent years, so let’s see what the Cityzens supporters have been saying on Twitter about Klopp’s words…

Arsenal fans stick boot into Aubameyang despite match-winning display

[ad_pod ]

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal beat Watford 1-0 on Monday evening but fans were not completely satisfied with the star’s performance.

The Gabon international capitalised on a terrible error from Ben Foster, blocking an attempted clearance and diverting it into the net.

Speaking to the club’s official website after the game, he said: “I’m a guy who always believes in small chances and that was a small chance for me and I tried my best to get to the goalkeeper and I did it and I scored so I am happy. I’ve waited a long time to score a goal like this!”

The goal was Aubameyang’s 18th in the Premier League this season, from 32 games, while he has also laid on five assists.

However, per WhoScored, his goal was his only shot on target through the game despite the fact he had five attempts. Two were off target while two were blocked by Watford’s defenders.

And fans believe that the 29-year-old could have made the result all the more comfortable for Unai Emery’s men.

Indeed, the Gunners spent the majority of the game playing against 10 men after Troy Deeney was sent off in the first half for an alleged elbow on Lucas Torreira.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

Why are paranoia and pessimism so prominent amongst Manchester City and Liverpool fans?

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United’s two decades of Premier League dominance was hard to bear for their rivals and made even more so by the arrogance of their fans. There was an inherent entitlement that was prevalent in everything they said and did. They even had a song boasting that they could do what they liked simply for being who they were.

There is very little virtue to be found in such hubris but perhaps in hindsight it can be viewed with some degree of understanding. After all, strip away the imperiousness and what you’re left with is a bedrock of self-belief and frankly when your team contains Cantona, Keane, Giggs and Beckham, and your manager is Sir Alex Ferguson, and your club is winning titles like nobody’s business, you have every right to feel assured. A certain swagger is justified.

Jump-cut to the present and their throne has been reupholstered in sky blue. Manchester City have won three titles in seven years and last season they smashed all manner of long-standing records and eventually accumulated one hundred points. They have Pep Guardiola – unquestionably the most coveted coach in world football – moving his players around like chess pieces from the technical area. Their squad contains David Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling and Aguero. Are City fans happy with this monumental usurping? Of course they are. They’re ecstatic. Are they assured though? Not even slightly.

What is behind Liverpool’s recent title race slip ups? The Pl>ymaker FC squad discuss in the video above…

Scroll down the Twitter timeline of a City supporter, or hear them out in the pub and what you will encounter is paranoia and pessimism and I should know because I’m a City supporter myself and I can vent to an Olympic standard. UEFA are out to screw us. The media similarly have an agenda and they delight in undermining our achievements by taking snide pot-shots at every opportunity. Should the back pages of newspapers be taken at face value you would be under the impression that the media darlings Liverpool are fighting a valiant cause this season while City are the bad guys. Last year Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore said: “I’d like someone to get a little bit closer to Manchester City” and it doesn’t require a tinfoil hat to suggest that when that’s the desire of the authorities it might explain why Sergio Aguero needs to be chain-sawed at the knees to win a penalty.

As for pessimism we only need look back to City’s defeat at Newcastle at the end of January that saw half of the club’s fan-base forcefully cede that any realistic hope for a consecutive Premier League crown was over. This despite the fact that similar points deficits had been successfully clawed back in two of their previous title-winning campaigns.

Such negativity however is not the sole preserve of Blues. Presently Liverpool are in strong contention for their first league title since 1990 with a formidable and ferociously brilliant side who have lost precisely once all season. At the helm is Jurgen Klopp – unquestionably the best coach at Anfield since their halcyon days – and it is perfectly conceivable that he might lead his troops to an incredible double this May. Their squad is elevated by last season’s Player of the Year Mo Salah and bolstered by this season’s Player of the Year-in-waiting Virgil Van Dyke. Are Reds excited by all of this? Of course they are. They’re buzzing. Are they assured though? Absolutely not.

Scroll down the Twitter timeline of a Liverpool supporter, or hear them out in the pub and what you will encounter is paranoia and pessimism. Player X is underperforming and what the hell is Klopp playing at sticking by him? The media are the enemy and as for the authorities a conspiracy is clearly afoot because the last penalty given for the home side at Anfield coincided with the release of Sgt Pepper.

Ahead of this week’s Champions League draw Liverpool fans became convinced that City would be drawn with Porto, the weakest-on-paper team left in the tournament. They became convinced that UEFA – an organisation currently investigating Manchester City on FFP charges – would facilitate an easier passage for the Blues while ensuring somehow that Liverpool got Barcelona and Juventus combined.

When it comes to pessimism Reds are drawn towards it almost as an act of self-preservation. So brittle are they from past near-misses that despite being only a single point behind City with eight to play the prevailing talk is akin to a contestant on a game show who is willing to eschew the big gamble and is instead happy to take home what they’ve won so far.

These are clubs – and by extension fan-bases – who are experiencing their greatest of days; three-quarters in to amazing and exhilarating adventures. Yet their psyches could not contrast any greater with the indomitable bombast of United – and Arsenal too – in their pomp.

The reasons for this are multifarious but all have their roots in not only social media and the internet at large but also in the incalculable influence that social media and the internet at large has had on life beyond our computer screens. Everything is so relentless now. The chatter and accusations. The hot takes and the angles. The anticipation and the post-mortems and the hype and the ever-changing news. It is all-encompassing and unavoidable and when you’re the one on top of the pile you’re the one with a great big target on your back.

Is it any wonder then that City and Liverpool supporters have become defensive by default? And does that offer up the rather depressing notion that fans of teams in the ascendancy moving forward will always be deprived of the luxury to luxuriate in their success? Certainly both sets of fans are not able to cockily gloat Monday to Friday like United and Arsenal could. Not when Bob in accounts thinks City are cheats. And Dave in the warehouse insists that Liverpool are bottlers.

This ultimately is a great shame. Because right now – for both Manchester City and Liverpool supporters – a certain swagger would be more than justified.
