Aaron Finch delivered a remarkable last-over win for Victoria, who made the third-highest successful chase in Australian domestic one-day history to deny Tasmania at the MCG. The Bushrangers needed 301 to overhaul the Tasmanian total set up by Rhett Lockyear’s maiden century, and the chase was brilliantly put back on track by Finch after the loss of key wickets.Victoria lost the usual suspects – Brad Hodge for 42, David Hussey (8) and Chris Rogers (19) – before the halfway mark and Tasmania appeared set for a healthy victory. But Finch combined with Matthew Wade, who made 30, and John Hastings for two critical partnerships that guided the home side to the point where they needed six from the final over.Finch confirmed the result with four balls to spare with a six over long-on from Brett Geeves to finish unbeaten on 87 from 87 deliveries. In his seven previous one-day matches, Finch’s top score was 33, but on this occasion he showed his power and poise to reinvigorate Victoria when their required run-rate blew out to more than ten an over. The Finch-Hastings partnership was the last chance for Victoria before the tailenders and they combined for an unbeaten 75. Hastings finished with 41 from 28 deliveries and provided a couple of key moments when he launched Jason Krejza for six and then struck consecutive fours off Geeves in the 48th over.It gave Victoria their highest successful chase in domestic 50-over cricket and behind only two South Australian efforts over the past two summers. The result took some of the gloss of what had been a remarkable match for Tasmania’s Lockyear, who, like Finch, came of age in this game.Lockyear was only playing because the allrounder Luke Butterworth strained a glute muscle during the week. He made the most of his opportunity opening the batting, striking 111 from 98 deliveries before he became tired and skied a catch off Bryce McGain.George Bailey (63) and Travis Birt (66) kept Tasmania on track for a huge total, which frustrated Victoria’s captain David Hussey after he put down one of the simplest return catches imaginable when Bailey had 30. It didn’t matter in the end as Victoria proved they can win without big contributions from Hodge and Hussey, and they now sit second on the table.

West Brom: Matheus Pereira contract a worry

West Brom could be heading for an absolutely unforgivable disaster amid reports that star man Matheus Pereira is unhappy over his current contract.

According to The Athletic’s Steve Madeley, the Brazilian playmaker has cut a frustrated figure on the training pitch since earning promotion to the top-flight with the Baggies last season.

He claims that this is down to the terms over a potential new deal.

“From his point of view, his eight goals and 16 assists in last season’s Championship made him worthy of a hefty salary increase and a contract befitting a star player,” wrote Madeley.

“From the club’s standpoint, they had taken on a player who was out of favour at Sporting, given him a chance in English football, enabled him to get to the Premier League and honoured a deal he had agreed to a year earlier.”

Indeed, this is rather a perplexing stance for Albion’s hierarchy, namely sporting and technical director Luke Dowling, to take.

Pereira is undeniably the best player at the Hawthorns in recent times and despite the step-up in quality and poor form of the Baggies, he has still proven to be more influential than anyone else.

Building on that tally of eight goals and 16 assists, the attacking midfielder, who is valued at a whopping €30m (£27m) by CIES, has already contributed towards another five goals in all competitions this term.

In the Premier League, no other West Brom regular has managed more assists and he is also managing over double the number of average key passes per game than any other player too, via WhoScored.

If you took out his two key passes per game, Sam Allardyce’s side would be completely void of ideas in attack as Matty Phillips ranks next best having averaged a mediocre 0.9 key passes per game himself.

Pereira was lauded as an “absolute steal” upon his arrival by Portuguese football journalist Tom Kundert, whilst ex-Nurnburg coach Nate Weiss dubbed him a “genius” who “who has a technical ability that I have never even seen before.”

That is exactly why Pereira’s stance over a lucrative extension is the right one, and why Dowling is completely in the wrong to hold back.

It’s only going to risk his long-term future at the club, and given they are sat second-from-bottom in the Premier League, they need their star man firing happily on all cylinders

The Telegraph believe the £9m signing is currently on around £30k-per-week, which would put him behind both Charlie Austin (£55k-per-week) and Kenneth Zohore (£50k-per-week via The Sun, 13th September, page 61), neither of which are even at the club right now.

Therefore, not giving him what he quite rightly earns is playing with fire. That could come back to bite later down the line.

Wolves exclusive: Windass says move for Diego Costa should be considered

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Dean Windass hinted that Wolves should consider a move for former Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

The Spaniard had his contract with Atletico Madrid mutually terminated last month and as a result, he’s now available for clubs to sign on a free transfer.

Wolves are one of the sides reportedly interested in the forward but according to Fabrizio Romano, the forward only has one offer on the table at the moment – from a team in Saudi Arabia.

Tottenham and Leeds have also been mentioned in the same breath as Costa but it looks as though he’ll take some time to make a decision before throwing himself back into football immediately.

It’s thought the Old Gold are on the hunt for a new striker with Raul Jimenez currently absent through injury and thus, Windass thinks that Costa would fit the bill at Molineux.

When asked which Premier League sides should consider a move for Costa, Windass told Football FanCast: “Wolves could [be a good] fit, obviously, with Jimenez fracturing his skull. That could be a good fit.”

Diego Costa, Leeds United, Premier League, Marcelo Bielsa, Dean Windass, Exclusive, Victor Orta, Elland Road, Andrea Radrizzani, Atletico Madrid,

Wolves signed Fabio Silva for £35.6m in the summer so any January transfer will presumably have to be done at cut-price.

Costa may cost a pretty penny in terms of his weekly salary but the club would do little wrong by acquiring him on a free transfer.

The 24-cap Spain international has already made 89 appearances in the Premier League, scoring 52 goals in the process.

His record this season isn’t so impressive, however. The 32-year-old netted twice in seven appearances for Atletico before he was allowed to end his contract in the Spanish capital.

Southampton’s predicted XI to challenge league leaders Everton

Southampton will hope they can keep their positive run of form going after upsetting Chelsea last time out with a surprise 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge. The Saints will host Premier League leaders Everton this afternoon in a quest to deliver them their first defeat of the 2020/21 season.

As it stands, the Saints are just one point behind ninth place Spurs and could really make headway up the table with a win over the Blues. Ralph Hasenhuttl announced that Mohammed Salisu will still not make his debut this week, however. Fans must wait a bit longer before they see their new signing take to the big stage.

Football FanCast has predicted how Southampton might line up against the Toffees this afternoon…

Whilst Hasenhuttl is onto a winning formula, it’s unlikely he will make many changes where he doesn’t have to. But Theo Walcott will be unavailable for selection against his parent club, meaning the right-hand side will open up for new personnel with Stuart Armstrong having been suffering with Coronavirus. The Austrian could opt to shift James Ward-Prowse a bit higher up the pitch with Nathan Redmond, deploying both Ibrahima Diallo and Oriol Romeu in front of the defence.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been on fire for the Blues and it will be imperative to keep him quiet and shut out any potential attacks. With no Richarlison, he will be starved of his usual reception, which is a huge boost for Southampton, but they will still need to be on the look out.

Shifting Ward-Prowse further to the right will also allow him to link-up with Kyle Walker-Peters at right-back, nullifying the attacking threat of Lucas Digne. The former Spurs man enjoys joining the attack and could overlap the midfielder to keep Everton on their toes and create some surprise counter-attacks.

In an unchanged attack, Che Adams will pair up with Danny Ings, who will be looking to continue his impressive record against the Toffees. The ex-Liverpool striker has scored more goals against his former rivals than he has any other team, a goal for him will be almost sure to upset the league leaders.

Celtic move for £10m flop Tom Ince would be an unforgivable error

Emerging reports this week have linked Celtic with a shock move for a Championship outcast and it’s one that must be avoided at all costs…

What’s the word?

According to TEAMtalk, the Scottish champions have expressed an interest in Stoke City winger Tom Ince, who faces uncertainty over his future in Staffordshire.

Despite being under contract until 2022, the 28-year-old is not in Michael O’Neill’s plans for the current campaign, meaning he could be free to leave to any interested party.

SPFL rivals Rangers and Premier League newcomers West Brom are also said to be keen to snap up the £10m flop.

Unforgivable swoop

It’s been a very long time since Ince did anything of note.

Last term, the Englishman could only deliver three goals and two assists despite starting 31 matches in the Championship. You have to go way back to the 2016/17 campaign to find the last time that Ince bagged more than six goals, per WhoScored.

If he’s struggling to cut it in the second-flight, then why would he be an improvement at Celtic Park?

James Forrest and Moi Elyounoussi are Neil Lennon’s first-choice wide options whilst they have support from encouraging prospects like Karamoko Dembele and Mikey Johnston.

It remains to be seen how much the Potters misfit would cost Nick Hammond, though he’s thought to be on a £27k-per-week contract, which would make him the highest-earner at Parkhead.

Even Odsonne Edouard is on less at £18k-per-week. What an insult it would be to the Frenchman if Ince were to come in and command more on the back of a paltry season in English football.

That would be unforgivable on the Hoops’ part.

Ince has been lauded in the past as a “real team player” by ex-Rams boss Paul Clement as well as describing himself as “not one of those old fashioned wingers who just gets crosses in, I like to create things, show bits of magic.”

Yet, this isn’t a move they should be making this window.

AND in other news, Celtic could be faced with shades of John McGinn if they do not secure seven-figure “diamond”…

Meslier is Leeds’ bargain of the summer

Leeds United’s good start to the Premier League season has had many pundits raving about the Whites’ attacking intent, but it’s easy to forget that one man who deserves just as much credit as any forward player this season is United’s goalkeeper.

Indeed, Illan Meslier may have only kept one clean sheet so far this season, but he has been instrumental in Leeds’ success so far, earning all sorts of plaudits along the way.

Undoubtedly, his best performance of the season came against Sheffield United where he made two saves from John Lundstram and George Baldock at point-blank range to deny the Blades and eventually earn his team three points.

It’s hard to imagine where Leeds would be without their goalkeeper, and the fact that he cost just £5m this summer, makes his performances that much sweeter.

Marcelo Bielsa’s comments on him last season show just how good he is while also highlighting how much of a bargain he was.

“He is a goalkeeper without weak points and he has been with us from the beginning of the season,” Bielsa said.

Nobody expected a youngster from Ligue 2 to be Premier League ready this quickly, but Meslier is doing the business against the very best sides in the league.

Yes, he conceded eight in his first two games, but with three of those being penalties and others being down to individual errors, such as Liam Cooper’s poor marking of Aleksandar Mitrovic against Fulham, those numbers look far more forgivable.

At just £5m he has a better save percentage than £65m man Alisson, and if you discount the three penalties that have been scored against him, his save percentage goes up to 80%, which is good enough for third-best in the league.

In an age where relegated goalkeepers can cost £18.5m signing Meslier for £5m is one of the biggest bargains we’ve seen this summer, and Leeds can be proud of the fact that they’ve uncovered such a gem from absolutely nowhere.

West Ham selling Felipe Anderson a reminder of GSB’s failings

One of West Ham United’s flops has been given an exit route out of the club this summer but it’ll only prove just how badly David Sullivan, David Gold and Karren Brady have run the east London outfit…

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Star, Lazio are keen on bringing their former winger Felipe Anderson back to the Italian capital this summer after being snubbed by David Silva at the last minute.

The Manchester City legend opted for a move to La Liga side Real Sociedad instead, leaving a furious Lazio looking at alternatives, of which the Brazilian is one.

It’s claimed that the Hammers would be open into selling their one-time £36m club-record signing with the Serie A outfit eyeing up a move.

One of many GSB’s failures

Anderson featured 28 times in all competitions for the Irons this season but only managed to deliver one goal and four assists, averaging just 1 key pass and 0.9 shots per game, via WhoScored.

It has been suggested that West Ham would sell the 27-year-old for just £30m, so if they were to offload him back to Lazio, then it only goes to show just how poorly GSB have conducted business over the years.

You only have to look at Alban Ajeti for a more recent example.

In the 5 foot 9 wide man, they have blown a total of £50.5m through transfer fees, add-ons and his reported £85k-per-week wages.

That’s an awful, awful lot of money for a player that has simply failed to deliver and the east Londoners are going to struggle to get half that in return for his services this summer.

It’s hardly encouraging for David Moyes, who will no doubt be wanting to bolster his squad having only staved off relegation in the final few games of the season.

Anderson’s sale could fund new additions, but can GSB be trusted to finally get it right? It looks rather doubtful.

AND in other news, West Ham signing PL rival STAR would be shades of Frank Lampard…

Spurs must sign Inter winger Ivan Perisic this summer

According to Calcio Mercato, Tottenham could offer Erik Lamela to Serie A giants Inter this summer in order to sign Ivan Perisic.

What’s the word?

After guiding Tottenham to a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, and thus securing Europa League football for next season, Jose Mourinho will no doubt be hoping he gets backed in the transfer market this summer.

Can you name every one of Spurs’ top goalscorers from the past 15 seasons? It’s a tricky one…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And as per Italian publication Calcio Mercato, Spurs are keen on Croatia international Perisic, and are willing to send Lamela in the opposite direction to lure him away from Inter this summer.

Mourinho’s perfect signing

With finances set to be tight this summer, swap deals may become the norm in the Premier League, and if Daniel Levy can engineer a move in which Spurs get Perisic for Lamela, then it would be an absolute masterclass.

Mourinho has gone on record with his praise for Perisic, with his comments after his performance in Croatia’s World Cup semi-final triumph over England back in 2018 showing just how much he rates him.

He said: “Perisic is the kind of winger that is different to the others. Normally you look at wingers and they are just fast and creative. But he is also physical, very physical, fantastic in the air.”

Described as a leader and someone who sacrifices himself for the team by former Inter boss Luciano Spalletti, the 6 foot 1 ace has all the hallmarks of being a prototypical Mourinho signing.

Tall, strong and someone who rises to the big occasion – he struck the equaliser against the Three Lions in that semi-final – Perisic could add some vital trophy-winning experience to Spurs ahead of next season and ensure they have the kind of player who won’t shirk the key moments.
