Barcelona change stadium again! City council deny Camp Nou return once more as Hansi Flick's side forced into new home ground

Barcelona’s hopes of returning to Camp Nou this weekend have been dashed once again as the City Council refused to grant the licence needed to reopen the stadium. Hansi Flick’s side, amid ongoing renovations, were aiming to host Real Sociedad at a reduced capacity of 27,000 at Spotify Camp Nou, but security concerns have forced the club to look elsewhere.

  • Blaugrana blocked from home turf

President Joan Laporta and Institutional Vice-President Elena Fort had voiced optimism on Tuesday that approval would come through, but their expectations were left unmet. According to , the council cited safety measures as the primary reason for the denial.

    Safety first, council insists

Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet told local media that while the stadium’s renovation is near completion, officials cannot allow fans in without full compliance with safety standards.

"We are at the end of the first phase, which will culminate in the licensing process, but we need to ensure that all safety conditions are met,” Bonet said. "We share Barça’s desire for a successful and swift return. But this City Council must guarantee the safety of fans. This is our priority. We must ensure that the technicians can work rigorously.”

An unnamed council source further detailed the issues preventing the green light.

“We’re in the verification phase," the source said. "These are mainly deficiencies in the evacuation exits and the clearing of the camp. There’s a failure to comply with regulations. There are also accessibility issues that affect the safety of evacuation traffic: poor signage, handrails, poorly finished stairs. Vehicle accessibility… but there’s a lot of work done, and we don’t expect it to be a lengthy process. It’s not a huge amount, but we think we can resolve them quickly.”

  • Next stop: Montjuic

With Camp Nou off-limits, Barcelona confirmed their next fixtures will be staged at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys at Montjuïc. The Catalan giants will host Real Sociedad on Sunday night at the Montjuïc venue, with UEFA already confirming that the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain on 1 October will also take place there.

    Countdown to Camp Nou return

While the exact reopening date remains uncertain, both the club and council are eager for a resolution. Barcelona are determined to return to their historic home as soon as the final safety inspections are cleared, but until then, Montjuic will act as a stopgap for domestic and continental fixtures.

Liverpool made approach for a Guehi alternative as soon as the window ended

Liverpool have made an approach for a Premier League player and Marc Guehi alternative – one who has been hailed for his “ambitious” nature.

Guehi "extremely unhappy" after failed Liverpool move

The Reds completed a superb summer transfer window by signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British record fee of £125m, but it could have been even better.

It looked as though Liverpool would also snap up Guehi, agreeing a long-term move with the Englishman, only to see Crystal Palace deny him his move at the eleventh hour. Manager Oliver Glasner reportedly threatened to quit if the 25-year-old was sold to the Reds, with the Eagles not having enough centre-back depth without him.

Crystal Palace'sMarcGuehilooks dejected.

It has made for an ugly situation, with Guehi thought to be “extremely unhappy” at the situation, according to journalist Ed Aarons, and he is now unlikely to sign a new deal ahead of his current contract expiring next summer. That will then allow him to depart on a free transfer.

Liverpool may need to look at different defenders looking ahead, should they feel that their chance of signing Guehi has been and gone, and another Premier League player has been linked with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool make approach for Nathan Collins

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool have made an approach for Brentford captain Nathan Collins, potentially seeing him as a different option to Guehi moving forward. It’s worth stressing that a formal offer hasn’t been lodged, but the Premier League champions do see the £43m-rated Irishman as “on their shortlist of defensive targets”.

Nathan Collins in action for Brentford

Collins would be a solid signing for Liverpool, having impressed as both a performer and a leader for Brentford, being hailed by Thomas Frank during their time working together.

“He can carry the ball out of defence and also has the composure to find the right pass during build-up play. His character is really good, and we know that character is everything. He will fit into our culture, I have no doubt about that. I see leadership potential in Nathan. He’s a perfect Brentford player – hungry and ambitious with a desire to learn.”

With all due respect to the Brentford skipper, though, Guehi still stands out as the leading option for Liverpool, whether that be in January or beyond. He has become one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders, and has every chance of starting for England at next summer’s World Cup, and they shouldn’t give up on signing him after one hiccup.

Isak can do the one thing for Liverpool that Haaland never did at Man City

But Collins could be a shrewd alternative, and he is a year younger than Guehi, allowing Arne Slot to bring him in at a good age and turn him into an even more formidable all-round defender.

Worse than Bruno: Amorim must drop Man Utd star who lost the ball 18 times

Manchester United failed to get their first win of the Premier League season on the board as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Leny Yoro’s header, which was later decided to be an own goal from Rodrigo Muniz, gave the Red Devils the lead in the second half, and they appeared to be on course for all three points.

Unfortunately, a lapse in concentration at the back for United allowed Emile Smith Rowe to ghost in and knock the ball past Altay Bayindir to seal a point for the home side.

There was also a missed penalty amongst it all, as Bruno Fernandes skied his effort over the bar in the first-half before the own goal from Muniz put United ahead anyway.

Bruno Fernandes' performance against Fulham

The Portugal international had the perfect chance to open the scoring when a penalty was awarded for Calvin Bassey’s foul on Mason Mount in the box, but blazed his effort well over the bar.

Fernandes was unhappy with the fact that the referee interrupted his run-up, which he did start again, but that was not enough to excuse how poor the strike was.

The United skipper did, however, enjoy a very solid game aside from that penalty miss. Per Sofascore, the central midfielder won eight of his ten duels, completed both of his attempted dribbles, and created one chance.

Fernandes tried to get on the ball to make things happen, whilst being combative and strong out of possession, but let himself down in unusual fashion from the penalty spot.

Meanwhile, Patrick Dorgu’s overall performance was worse than the captain’s on the left and Ruben Amorim should consider ruthlessly dropping him from the side.

Why Patrick Dorgu should be dropped

The Danish full-back is in the side to provide dynamism and an attacking outlet down the left as a wing-back, but did not show anywhere near enough quality against the Cottagers.

Dorgu’s performance left far too much to be desired. Whilst Fernandes was, at least, strong defensively, the wing-back lost six of his eight ground duels and was dribbled past twice without making a single tackle, per Sofascore.

This shows that it was far too easy for Fulham attackers to get the better of him in one-on-one battles, and that he did not provide Luke Shaw with enough protection down the left flank.

Unfortunately, the 20-year-old flop’s use of the ball did not make up for his lack of defensive quality, as the former Serie A starlet failed to deliver quality in possession.

As you can see in the table above, Dorgu lost possession a whopping 18 times without creating a single chance or having a shot on goal to test Bernd Leno.

The one time that the Danish whiz did make a perfect run to break the last line of Fulham’s defence, his stretched attempt to cross the ball hit the side netting without troubling anyone in Fulham white.

This is why Amorim must ruthlessly ditch the young defender from the starting XI for the clash with Burnley in the Premier League next weekend, after the League Cup game against Burnley.

In an ideal world, that would include a change of shape to a back four with Luke Shaw in his more natural position, but it could see Shaw or Diogo Dalot play as the left wing-back instead.

He'd be perfect alongside Kudus: Spurs in talks for "remarkable" £40m star

Tottenham Hotspur fans won’t be used to the heavy spending they’ve seen over the last couple of weeks, with Daniel Levy evidently looking to back new boss Thomas Frank.

The club completed the £55m signing of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United last week, as the club look to build a competitive squad which is capable of challenging for a place at the top of the table.

After finishing 15th in the Premier League last season, it’s no surprise to see new additions being lined up, with added funds expected to be dropped in the coming weeks.

Morgan Gibbs-White has been another player mentioned with a move to North London this summer, but a deal could now appear complicated given the threat of legal action from his current side, Nottingham Forest.

It’s unclear whether a deal for the England international will get completed, leading to other attacking talent being linked with big-money transfers to join the Lilywhites.

The latest on Spurs’ hunt for new additions this summer

Tyler Dibling is a player who’s constantly been on Spurs’ radar in recent months, especially after suffering relegation back to the Championship at the end of the season.

However, any deal for the teenager would set the hierarchy back a fee in the region of £55m this summer, potentially facing competition from Manchester United for his signature this window.

Another Premier League attacker has appeared on their radar over the last couple of days, with Brentford striker Yoane Wissa now a key target, according to TBR Football.

Their report claims that the Lilywhites are just one of various top-flight sides who have been in talks with his representatives over a move after scoring 19 league goals in 2024/25.

It also states that he could be available for a fee in the region of £40m during the ongoing window, that’s despite the Bees originally demanding £50m for his signature.

Why Spurs’ £40m target would be perfect alongside Kudus

The signing of Kudus could prove to be an excellent one for Spurs ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, handing Frank the needed versatility within attacking areas.

West Ham United's MohammedKuduscelebrates

The Ghanaian can operate off the right or left-hand side of the frontline, whilst also being able to feature in the number ten position – having the creative nature to hand others around him the chances to impress.

In the Premier League last season, the 24-year-old registered 3.2 successful take-ons and an 84% accuracy, having the skillset to take the ball forward into attacking areas.

He also notched 2.1 carries into the final third along with 1.5 carries into the opposition’s box per 90, further highlighting his impressive ability with the ball at his feet.

Such figures could be handy for Wissa should the DR Congo international make the move across the capital and reunite with his former boss in North London.

Brentford's YoaneWissacelebrates scoring their first goal

When delving into the forward’s stats from his spell with the Bees last season, he has the tools to be a success at the club, handing Frank the needed talisman he craves with the Lilywhites.

Wissa, who’s been labelled “remarkable” by journalist Zach Lowy, managed to register 1.3 shots on target per 90, subsequently being able to link up with Kudus, especially considering the Ghanian’s tally of 1.2 chances created per 90 in the Premier League.

His clinical nature in front of goal would be a massive boost in the club’s hunt for future success, scoring 19 times, which would’ve made him the Lilywhites’ top scorer last campaign.

The prospect of Wissa linking up with Kudus in North London is one for the fans to be excited by, having the tools to work together and catapult the side up the table next time around.

£40m may appear to be an expensive price tag, but if he can replicate the levels he produced under Frank last season, it would be a phenomenal signing that would add a new dimension to the frontline.

Premier League giants want to sign £35k-a-week Everton star this summer

One of the biggest clubs in the Premier League wants to sign an Everton star this summer, according to an update from former scout Mick Brown.

Everton battling to keep hold of key men

While much focus is on the players the Blues could sign in the summer transfer window, there are certain key figures whose services must be retained ahead of next season.

Jarrad Branthwaite is one such example, with the England international likely to be the subject of plenty of interest from some big clubs, as he continues to impress in an Everton shirt. Manchester United are thought to be in the mix to sign him, for example.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

There are also others who may simply move on with their deals up at the end of the season. Abdoulaye Doucoure has been linked with a summer exit after an impressive spell with the Blues, not least scoring that all-important goal against Bournemouth back in 2023.

The same applies to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who hasn’t always found playing time easy to come by this season, starting only 19 times in the Premier League. He is also out of contract at the end of the season.

Everton star Branthwaite wanted by Chelsea

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown claimed that Chelsea are interested in completing the signing of Everton centre-back Branthwaite this summer:

“There’s no doubt the manager wants to improve his defensive options. I’m told they’ve been looking at Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton. He would be a solid option for them, but I don’t think they’re completely convinced. If you’re looking at Branthwaite, how much better is he than what they’ve already got at Chelsea? Then, you have to consider that it would take big money to bring him in because Everton aren’t going to let him go easily.

“So if they’re spending that type of money, they want a player who would be a really significant upgrade on the likes of Colwill, and they’re not convinced he is. It’s something they’ll consider and then they’ll be the ones to make that decision. But as things stand I think they’re more likely to look elsewhere.”

The £35,000-a-week Branthwaite is arguably Everton’s most prized asset currently, so they must do all they can to retain his services.

The 22-year-old has once again been a rock at the heart of his side’s defence in 2024/25, making 30 appearances in the Premier League, averaging a whopping 6.3 clearances per game.

Branthwaite has received so much adoration in recent years after his rapid rise at Everton, with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher heaping praise on him, saying:

“Branthwaite has been outstanding. I think this lad is pretty special. He’s a big part of why Everton in my eyes have a good chance of staying up, him and his partnership with [James] Tarkowski.”

Everton should only entertain the idea of allowing Branthwaite to leave if a monstrous offer arrives from Chelsea or elsewhere – ideally, though, he will be with the Blues for many years to come, becoming a legend over time.

Sky Sports: Birmingham "pushing hard" for "outstanding" 23 G/A POTY winner

Birmingham City are now “pushing hard” for the signing of a League One forward this summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett.

Blues summer transfer plans taking shape

While the Blues were always expected to secure promotion this season, having spent big on the likes of Jay Stansfield and Christoph Klarer last summer, they managed to do so in spectacular fashion, amassing a whopping 111 points to win the title.

Promotion to the second tier was the first task for Tom Brady and co, but the long-term goal is to seal promotion to the Premier League, as underlined by the fact the American owners are set to target similar players to Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester City this summer.

Although the season only recently came to a close, work has already started on signing new players, with a move for AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers being plotted, while Torino striker Che Adams is also of interest.

Torino'sCheAdams

Birmingham are also looking to strengthen their wide options this summer, according to Dorsett, with the reporter recently taking to X to reveal they are now “pushing hard” to sign Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku.

Poku’s contract is set to expire this summer, but given that he is just 23-years-old, compensation will be required, should the two clubs be unable to agree a fee, and arbitration is a situation everyone involved is looking to avoid.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has also endorsed the winger making the move to St. Andrews, saying: “If he went there it’s probably the best move of his life and he could go to the Premier League in a year.”

Birmingham City would scare Championship defences stiff if they picked up this top EFL talent alongside Che Adams.

ByKelan Sarson May 8, 2025 Poku could be "outstanding" signing for Birmingham

With Birmingham looking to kick on in the Championship next season, it could be a solid strategy to recruit some of the third tier’s top players, and the Peterborough star could well be in that category, given his impressive attacking record this season.

Having amassed a combined 23 goals and assists in all competitions, there are clear signs the Ghana international could be capable of making the step-up to Championship next season, and potentially the top flight if he continues his current trajectory.

Not only that, but the Peterborough star was named as the Posh’s player of the year, which led to high praise from members of the Ghanaian media.

Poku could be a fantastic signing for Birmingham this summer, with Davies looking to build a squad capable of winning another promotion.

Rodgers could revive Kuhn by playing him in a brand new role at Celtic

Celtic are currently 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with six matches left to play before the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Brendan Rodgers’s side are on course to win the top-flight title for the fourth successive year, since the old enemy won it in the 2020/21 season, but it has not been a perfect season by any stretch at Parkhead.

Celtic manager BrendanRodgersbefore the match

The Hoops have already lost more games (four) than they did in the entirety of the 2023/24 Premiership term, with their most recent defeat coming against St. Johnstone last weekend.

Celtic have lost two of their last three matches, having lost 3-2 to Rangers before the international break, and that is something Rodgers will be concerned about heading into the summer.

The Hoops boss will not want it to become a habit heading into next season and, so, will be looking at what has gone wrong in recent games to make adjustments and improve the team.

What went wrong in Celtic's loss to St. Johnstone

There were several reasons why the Premiership leaders ended up on the wrong side of a result against the team rooted to the bottom of the table last weekend.

One of them was that Auston Trusty, who came in to replace Maik Nawrocki, gave away a cheap free-kick that presented the home side with a chance to put pressure on the goal, resulting in a header that made it 1-0.

That gave the Saints something to hold on to and they did exactly that for the rest of the match as they sat deep and defended the box for their lives, needing their goalkeeper to make nine saves in total.

Celtic were unable to break them down to get the equaliser, and a subsequent winner, because they did not offer enough quality in the final third, due to their top performers failing to step up.

As you can see in the table above, the front three that Rodgers selected to the start did not do enough at the top end of the pitch, with zero ‘big chances’ created combined.

Nicolas Kuhn, in particular, struggled as the German forward delivered zero shots on target, one key pass, and lost 70% of his duels in the first half before being withdrawn from the action at the break.

It has been a frustrating time for the 25-year-old attacker, whose form has dipped from his early season heroics, and Rodgers may be thinking of ways to get the left-footed whiz back to his best.

Nicolas Kuhn's recent struggles for Celtic

After the defeat to St. Johnstone, Kuhn has now been substituted at half-time in two of the last three matches, having also been hooked at the break in the loss to Rangers.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The German winger has only scored one goal in his last ten appearances in the Premiership and has been substituted by the 72nd minute in all five of his most recent starts in the division, which suggests that Rodgers has not been overly pleased with what the forward has produced on the pitch.

Kuhn had scored nine goals in his first 17 outings in the Scottish top-flight, which shows that there has been a clear drop-off in his output in the final third from the right wing.

The former Bayern Munich and Ajax youngster was the star of the show for the Hoops in the first half of the season, as evidenced by his exceptional goal return, but he now needs to find a way to reignite that flame.

Whilst there are things Kuhn could do to get back to his best, like delivering more quality in his actions at the top end of the pitch from the right flank, there is also something that Rodgers could do to put the forward on the right track.

Why Celtic must play Nicolas Kuhn in a new role

36 of the 25-year-old star’s 37 starts in all competitions this season have been on the right flank and the Hoops manager could brilliantly revive the winger’s form by unleashing him in a brand new role for the club.

The ex-Rapid Vienna star has never played in a central position for Celtic but he has played as a centre-forward at previous clubs, scoring an eye-catching 29 goals in 43 matches in his career in that role.

Kuhn is currently struggling for goals, making little impact at the top end of the pitch, and a spell in the team as a striker could help him to rebuild his confidence, before going back out to the wing.

With the league all-but-secured – 13 points clear with six games to go – Rodgers can afford to experiment and try new things with the team, which is why unleashing the German in a brand new role could be worth trying.

As you can see in the table above, the Celtic star has outperformed his xG in both the Premiership and the Champions League this season, which speaks to his ability to efficiently finish chances that come his way.

This suggests that the potential may be there for him to be an effective centre-forward with the team creating chances for him in central positions, rather than him needing to create openings for himself by coming in off the right flank.

The Celtic star, as shown in the clip above, is capable of providing exceptional finishes and Rodgers must, now, offer him the chance to showcase his finishing quality as a centre-forward in one of the team’s upcoming matches, in an attempt to help him get back to his goalscoring best for the Scottish giants.

Rodgers must finally get rid of Celtic dud who earns more than Maeda

Celtic must move on from the forward who earns even more than Daizen Maeda.
