Norwich one step away from manager who’s never finished lower than fourth

After sacking David Wagner following play-off failure up against Leeds United, Norwich City are now reportedly one step away from signing their new manager and kicking off a new era at Carrow Road.

Norwich manager news

Wagner guided Norwich into the Championship's top six, before watching on as his side were eased out of the way by a dominant Leeds side in a 4-0 thrashing. Those in Norfolk then wasted no time before parting ways with their manager, with the club's sporting director Ben Knapper telling the official website: “David has operated with class and dignity throughout his period as Norwich City head coach, but we now feel that the time is right for us to move in a different direction.

“We remain committed to progressing our football club, in both the short and long-term, working through a diligent and thorough strategy. The appointment of a new head coach is an important one. We will now work and continue our due diligence with the view of making an appointment in the near future.”

That different direction has seemingly taken the Canaries towards Denmark too. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Norwich are now one step away from signing Johannes Thorup from Nordsjaelland with his work permit accepted on Thursday. This will likely see the 35-year-old arrive to take charge of just the second club in his managerial career, pending the board's final decision.

28 year-old Arsenal coach could now leave after Sunday to join Norwich

Nonetheless, his first two seasons in the dugout have certainly gone well, with Nordsjaelland finishing second in his first campaign before falling to fourth in his second, meaning that the Dane has never finished lower than the top four when taking charge of a senior side.

Thorup represents an exciting unknown

Norwich find themselves at a crossroads this summer. They're in no position to panic about Championship relegation, but promotion also seems a world away despite reaching the play-offs in the current campaign. And given that they've not been in the Premier League since 2022, they risk stagnation in England's second tier and away from their ability to bounce consistently up to the top flight.

Now is the time to try something new away from the same names and experienced managers. Now is the time to take a risk on a manager like Thorup. He's shown plenty of signs in Denmark that he has the potential to step up in the Championship, but at 35 years old, he will still need the time to build an ideal project at Carrow Road.

His preferred 4-3-3 attacking formation should add the excitement that Wagner lacked at times, whilst his connection with Nordsjaelland will hopefully create a pathway for talent to make their way to English football courtesy of Norwich. The Danish club are owned by the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana, which has produced the likes of West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus.

Everton hit gold on "sensational" ace who’s now worth more than Pickford

Over the last couple of years, Everton have conducted excellent business in the transfer market, turning their attention to younger talents and allowing them to develop at Goodison Park rather than signing big-money players who are past their best.

Jarrad Branthwaite arrived on Merseyside a couple of years ago for just £1m from Carlisle United and has bided his time and eventually made a huge impact on the Toffees' first-team so far this campaign.

He's started 33 times in the Premier League under boss Sean Dyche, forming an integral partnership with James Tarkowski at the heart of the club's defence – a huge key in the club's Premier League survival this season.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

However, his performances have attracted interest from fellow Premier League side Manchester United, who are rumoured to be targeting a big-money move for the 21-year-old this summer.

Whilst the club wouldn't want to lose their young talent this summer, it is a reflection of the excellent dealings in the market, with the club needing to focus more on youngsters in the years ahead.

Along with Branthwaite, the club also invested in a promising youngster a couple of seasons ago, with the Toffees really starting to reap the rewards of their brilliant scouting network.

Vitaliy Mykolenko's stats at Everton in 2023/24

Left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko joined the club in a £17m deal from Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv back in January 2022, with the then 22-year-old seen as the perfect, long-term replacement for Lucas Digne, who subsequently joined Aston Villa just a few days later.

After a slow start at Goodison – having notably been described as a "weak link" by journalist Richard Buxton last year – the 2023/24 season has arguably been his best to date at the club, with Mykokenko showing signs that he's fully settled into life in the Premier League.

Whilst he's managed two goals in the league this term, Mykolenko has established himself as a reliable defensive full-back, dominating in many areas throughout the campaign.

vitaliy-mykolenko-everton-premier-league

The Ukrainian has averaged 1.4 successful tackles per 90 in the Premier League this season, as well as 1.3 interceptions and three clearances – with the latter in the top three of all Toffees players.

Just over two years on from his arrival in England, Mykolenko has proved to be worth every penny of his £17m transfer fee, with his market value taking a sharp rise as a result of his performances.

Vitaliy Mykolenko's market value in 2024

The "sensational" defender, as described by writer Peter Guy, now boasts a market value of £24m, as per Transfermarkt, with his value now higher than goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who's reportedly now only worth £18.8m, despite signing on a £25m deal in 2017.

His rapid rise has also seen him overtake the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto, who are valued at the same as Pickford, with the latter suffering a huge drop since his £26m move less than a year ago.

His transformation under Dyche in recent months has been nothing short of sensational, with the Ukrainian having the potential to be the club's starting left-back for many years to come.

His transfer is proof you can recruit players outside of Europe's top five leagues that make a huge impact on the club whilst also making a tidy profit, with the full-back undoubtedly set to make the Toffees a huge profit should he ever depart Goodison Park.

Amorim tells Edwards to sign £40m+ "monster" for Liverpool this summer

As Ruben Amorim edges closer and closer to becoming Jurgen Klopp's successor at Liverpool this summer, reports suggest that he's outlined the players that he wants to bring to Anfield.

Liverpool transfer news

Liverpool were undoubtedly dealt a blow when Xabi Alonso revealed that he would be staying put at Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season, but they've pivoted well ever since to turn their attention towards Amorim. The Sporting CP manager has impressed in Portugal to become one of the best young coaches in European football at just 39-years-old. Now, reports suggest that Liverpool have struck a verbal agreement with their potential Klopp replacement.

The transfer rumours have already started circling since those reports of a verbal agreement too, with FC Porto's Alan Varela linked with a move to Anfield once again. The Argentine midfielder was even reportedly watched by Liverpool scouts in his recent league game against Vitoria. But he's not Amorim's first choice, it seems.

Liverpool could axe 4/10 star by unleashing a 'monstrous' talent

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp must unleash “monstrous” centre-back to beat Atalanta

ByJoe Nuttall Apr 11, 2024

According to Jornal Noticias via TeamTalk, Amorim is keen on bringing Morten Hjulmand to Liverpool this summer, telling Michael Edwards to kickstart his era with a bang by welcoming a familiar face. The Dane has enjoyed quite the season at Sporting, raising his price tag to as much as a reported €50m (£43m) ahead of the summer transfer window.

Morten Hjulmand in action.

The news of Amorim's interest is a particular blow for Manchester United, who are also eyeing a move to sign Hjulmand in the coming months. If Amorim arrives at Anfield, however, it's unlikely that Erik ten Hag will be able to put together a stronger pitch than the man who the midfielder has already enjoyed great success with.

"Monster" Hjulmand would replace Endo in the long-term

Despite an unexpectedly strong debut season, Wataru Endo doesn't have the benefit of several years left in his prime at 31-years-old, handing Liverpool a problem that 24-year-old Hjulmand would solve this summer.

The defensive midfielder would unlock Alexis Mac Allister on a permanent basis, rather than forcing those at Anfield to watch on as his compatriot is restricted to a more defensive role. It's a role off the ball that Hjulmand plays to great effect too, according to Zach Lowy.

With that said, if Liverpool are to hand Amorim the perfect start at Anfield, then welcoming Hjulmand would certainly be a good way of going about it. As their next potential manager looks to make his mark, the defensive midfielder could take a significant step into Premier League football in the coming months.

Southampton must drop star who had fewer touches than Bazunu v Blackburn

Southampton will look to get out of a sticky patch of not winning in their last three Championship matches by overcoming Coventry City tonight, after an underwhelming away trip to Blackburn Rovers last time out.

The stalemate at Ewood Park saw Southampton fail to show their superiority near the top of the division compared to Blackburn's lowly 16th spot, managing just two shots on target all game in the frustrating 0-0 draw.

The Saints firing blanks in Lancashire could see Adam Armstrong removed from the first-team picture for the clash with the Sky Blues tonight, a potentially bold call by Russell Martin but one that could work with the experienced centre-forward struggling last time out.

Adam Armstrong's performance vs Blackburn in numbers

Facing off against one of his ex-clubs in Blackburn, Armstrong would have been licking his lips at the prospect of firing in a couple of goals to haunt his former employers to steer Southampton to a win.

In reality, the 27-year-old striker would fail to really strike fear into the Riversiders at the back with a lacklustre 77-minute display.

Managing just 29 touches of the ball up top, with Southampton shot-stopper Gavin Bazunu managing 61 in stark contrast, Armstrong never found his groove against John Eustace's men and saw the game pass him by consequently.

Missing a big chance in the contest meant Armstrong couldn't follow up his last Championship strike away to Ipswich Town with another on his travels to Ewood Park, the usually potent Saints number nine uncharacteristically wasteful instead.

Martin could well be cursing his decision to play Armstrong through the centre for this game therefore, having got more out of the 27-year-old down the wings in recent weeks with the former Blackburn man helping himself to 11 assists alongside his 20 second tier strikes in this more creative role.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

It remains to be seen whether or not Martin moves Armstrong back out wide or axes him completely, but if he does switch up who his main striker is for the game with Coventry, Che Adams might well find himself back in his manager's plans again after sitting out the Blackburn stalemate.

Che Adams as Armstrong's replacement

Before Adams potentially walks out of St. Mary's in the summer for free, the in-demand number ten will hope he can fire in more goals for his promotion-chasing side to make an immediate return to the Premier League become reality.

The ex-Birmingham City attacker would have felt hard done by to have been dropped for the trip to Blackburn, having netted in the 3-2 defeat at Ipswich alongside Armstrong before the underwhelming display from his teammates versus the Riversiders.

Southampton were sorely lacking a figure like Adams in the forgettable match at Ewood Park, with the 29-time Scotland international throwing himself about effectively with four duels won in the game at Portman Road alongside notching up two key passes.

Armstrong, on the other hand, would win just two duels against Blackburn in total on top of making zero key passes to try and tee up a Saints shirt for an elusive strike.

Stuart Armstrong

Martin will hope these recent poor performances and results to match don't hinder his side's confidence too much, with the playoffs very much coming into view soon for the Saints.

It could well be a bold call from the Southampton boss to drop his team's top goalscorer, but it could prove to be a decision that takes Coventry by surprise on the way to three points being clinched.

Contact made: Man Utd in talks to sign "world-class" star in £50m transfer

Manchester United have intensified contacts in recent days to sign a new defender in a deal that could be worth more than £50m.

Ratcliffe lays out Man Utd transfer plans

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are preparing for their first transfer window as part owners and have full control over sporting decisions.

One of their toughest calls could be on manager Erik ten Hag, who's future is thought to be 50/50 at this stage. England boss Gareth Southgate, Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou and Brentford’s Thomas Frank have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent weeks.

ByCharlie Smith Mar 26, 2024

Whoever is in charge may need to shuffle their playing squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, but talking to the media recently, Ratcliffe hinted that the Red Devils may not splash the cash.

"I'd rather find the next Mbappe than spend a fortune trying to buy success. It's not that clever, is it, buying Mbappe, in a way? Anyone could figure that one out. Much more challenging is to find the next Mbappe or Jude Bellingham or the next Roy Keane."

Then asked if he’d like to sign Bellingham, he added:

"It's not where our focus is, the solution isn't spending a lot of money on a couple of great players. They've done that over the last 10 years. The first thing we need to do is get the right people in the right boxes who are managing and organising the club and make sure we get recruitment right. It's such a vital part of running a football club today, finding new players.”

Man Utd make contact for Gleison Bremer

One man who has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford is Juventus defender Gleison Bremer. There has been speculation that the Red Devils are ready to trigger the defender’s £50m release clause and are set to firm up their interest, and it looks as if that may have happened.

Juventus defender Gleison Bremer.

According to reports in Italy, Man Utd have now intensified contacts in recent days to sign Bremer, looking ‘to gain an advantageous position over their English competitors’, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham. Again, it is claimed that United have no problem paying Bremer’s £50m release clause, and they are also looking at Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.

The centre-back has actually been Juventus’ second-best performer in Serie A this season, as per WhoScored, behind another rumoured Man Utd target in Adrien Rabiot.

Bremer, called "world-class" by CBS commentator Matteo Bonetti, was also praised by former Brazil boss Tite, who said after calling him up to the 2022 World Cup squad: “Bremer had this opportunity to be called up thanks to his career and performances of a high level at Torino and Juventus. Perhaps we got it wrong and didn’t observe him closely enough, because he deserved more of our attention a lot earlier.

“When he arrived here, in the games and the training sessions we did together, he gave such a sense of certainty. He really is a player of great quality.”

Afghanistan's chance to prove they're no pushovers in Tests

Big picture

Don’t let Afghanistan’s two-day loss on their Test debut against India fool you. Incidentally then, Phil Simmons was their head coach. Today, he’s in the opposition camp, perhaps with a bank of knowledge he’d want to share with his West Indies team. Since that insipid debut, of course, Afghanistan have beaten Ireland in India and Bangladesh in Bangladesh. If they beat West Indies in Lucknow, they’ll become the only team in the history of the sport to win three of their first four Tests. The possibility is real. Under captain Rashid Khan, who has taken three five-wicket hauls in his last four Test innings, Afghanistan will run into a wonky West Indies batting line-up. The win in the T20I series should boost the ‘hosts’ to that effect. In their last three Tests, only twice have the West Indies batsmen gone past fifty. On a ground that is hosting it’s maiden Test, there are a lot of unknown variables, not least of all the pitch. Against a spin-based attack, West Indies will be tested. That said, Afghanistan would also do well to worry about their batting weakness. Barring Rahmat Shah, few have shown the tenacity to bat long. In both of Afghanistan’s Test wins, Rahmat’s contributions have been as integral as Rashid’s. But with senior allrounder Mohammad Nabi having retired from Tests, someone else too needs to step up.For West Indies, the series is about showing that they aren’t falling behind in the red-ball format. For Afghanistan, it’s time to say that, they too, possess the quality to find a spot in the next cycle of the World Test Championship.

Form Guide

In the spotlight

It appears that the job of filling the Nabi void has been given to 21-year-old allrounder Karim Janat, who has earned a Test berth after a splendid T20I series against West Indies. He struck an 18-ball 26 and picked up 5 for 11 in the second game before finishing the series with 1 for 33 in the third. He can find speeds of 140kph regularly, and with his elder brother Asghar Afghan there for company, Janat can find an arm around him for comfort, instead of being intimidated by the prospects of a main Test appearance. The form that made Kraigg Brathwaite ESPNcricinfo’s opener of the year in 2016 has gradually diminished as the decade comes to a close. He’s gone 19 innings without a Test fifty, and since February 2019, his only first-class century was one for Glamorgan in the English County Championship. It’s West Indies’ last Test match of the year, and with no other Test till they face England in June 2020, the team’s seniormost batsmen will ache to end 2019 with an impactful performance.Getty Images

Team news

Afghanistan coach Lance Klusener said it would be desirable to keep faith with the XI that won the Test in Bangladesh, though they’ll have to find a replacement for the retired Mohammad Nabi of course. Given the way Karim Janat performed in the T20Is, and that he offers an all-round option, he could well be the man to replace Nabi, even though he bowls seam up rather than spin. Afghanistan having plenty of spin options already with Rashid, Qais and Zahir.Afghanistan XI (probable): Ibrahim Zadran, Ihsanullah, Rahmat Shah, Javed Ahmadi, Asghar Afghan, Karim Janat, Afsar Zazai (wk), Rashid Khan (capt), Qais Ahmed, Yamin Ahmadzai, Zahir Khan.Rahkheem Cornwall had an ice-pack strapped to his left knee and didn’t take part in the warm-up drills or training session for West Indies. Coach Phil Simmons, however, said a final call on Cornwall would be taken only on the morning of the match. John Campbell is recovering from a stomach bug.West Indies XI (probable): Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell/Sunil Ambris, Shai Hope, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder (capt), Shane Dowrich (wk), Rahkeem Cornwall, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican/Alzarri Joseph.

Pitch and conditions

The match will be played on the same surface as the second ODI was played on. It’s a red-soil pitch, and is expected to aid spin bowling. Expect foggy mornings at the onset of winters up north in India. As such, conditions for red-ball cricket is relatively unknown at the ground, with only three first-class games being played at Lucknow since 2017.

Stats and trivia

  • In the last three first-class games at Lucknow, an average of 2 centuries and 3.33 half-centuries have been witnessed per match
  • With 333 runs, Jason Holder is West Indies’ highest run-scorer in 2019, averaging over 55 runs per innings. The second-highest run-scorer, Roston Chase, is more than 100 runs behind Holder.
  • Rashid Khan averages 18 runs per wicket in Tests

What they said

“Obviously one day I’d like to play at ‘home’ home, but this is home away from home for us. The surfaces have suited us, and that’s the important thing if you’re going to have home advantage”.
“They’ve had three Tests, and did well to win in Bangladesh, but it’s still a learning phase for them and hopefully we can capitalise on that.”

49ers could receive £0: Club plan to sign Leeds player who impressed Farke

Leeds United look set to lose a player who Daniel Farke has hailed for free this summer, with one club already planning their move.

Leeds transfer rumours

The Whites have been in blistering form in the Championship in 2024, winning nine straight second-tier games to put them in the second automatic promotion place.

An immediate return to the Premier League could be on the cards at Elland Road, which, as a result, is already resulting in some transfer rumours. The 49ers Enterprises could give Farke up to £100m in the summer window, should Leeds earn promotion, with former midfielder Kalvin Phillips already being linked with a return to Yorkshire.

Leeds may also have a number of loanees returning to the club, although Luis Sinisterra has now signed permanently for AFC Bournemouth and Robin Koch has penned terms with Eintracht Frankfurt. A number of Whites players are also out of contract in the summer.

It could be a busy few months on and off the pitch for Leeds, and it looks as if one loanee, also out of contract in the summer, could depart for free.

Ian Poveda transfer update

According to Sheffield Star reporter Alex Miller, Sheffield Wednesday are planning to sign Ian Poveda on a free transfer over the coming months.

The winger is currently on loan at Hillsborough and has featured regularly under Danny Rohl, but a permanent deal could depend on the Owls’ divisional status with relegation back to League One a real possibility.

It does seem as if Poveda’s days on the books at Leeds are numbered, and in fact, his January move was originally meant to be a permanent one before it turned into a loan on deadline day. He's already caught the eye at Hillsborough, with Troy Deeney hailing Poveda after his Sheffield Wednesday debut:

"He's bought into it all. We speak about the good things on the ball, he does the work off the ball as well, he won duels in the game and he's getting after it.

"He's not giving up and he's really embodied what Sheffield Wednesday need. He's got that x-factor, that little bit of extra quality that will change their fortunes not just now but moving forward."

The 24-year-old had been used on six occasions by Farke in the Championship this season, and the German praised the wide-man after he returned from international duty with Colombia last season.

“Ian came back with a smile on his face, lots of confidence because he had good performances on this level. He was also quite impressive during this training week. I like what he’s showing so far.”

Leeds currently have a number of wide options, including Crysencio Summerville, Wilfried Gnonto, Dan James and loanee Jaidon Anthony, and if they earn promotion to the Premier League, further additions could be made. Therefore, allowing Poveda to leave for nothing could make sense for all parties, even if it means the 49ers receiving nothing.
