Wolverhampton Wanderers: Fans rave over Tim Spiers post about Europa League

Plenty of Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have raved over a post from Tim Spiers as the journalist relayed information from The Telegraph writer James Ducker about the Europa League on his official Twitter page.

Ducker writes that the UEFA Europa League final in Gdansk, Poland has been provisionally earmarked for August 26th, with the Champions League final scheduled for three days later.

The Wanderers’ last game in the competition was the 1-1 draw against Olympiacos away in Greece over a month ago, with Pedro Neto scoring what could turn out to be a crucial equaliser against the ten men, who opened the scoring through Youssef El Arabi, as per Sky Sports.

The second leg is yet to be played but WWFC supporters may be silently confident with an away goal that they can finish the job at Molineux and progress through to the next round.

These fans were raving over the news, as many, jokingly or not, were already talking about seeing Wolves in the final:

Celtic: Fans recall Shunsuke Nakamura’s free kick winner against Manchester United

Many Celtic fans happily recalled the 13-year anniversary of a memorable European victory for the club, one which was settled by a moment of brilliance.

On November 21st, 2006, Shunsuke Nakamura curled an 80th-minute free kick into the top corner of the Manchester United net from 30 yards out to give Celtic a 1-0 victory that ensured the Hoops’ place in the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time. [via BBC]

That sumptuous strike from the Japanese attacking midfielder was named by Matt Le Tissier as one of the best five set piece goals he had ever seen, as per The Guardian.

It was one of 28 goals scored by Nakamura in his four-year stint at the club, which encompassed 142 appearances and saw him win three league titles, two Scottish League Cups and the Scottish Cup.

That win over Manchester United 13 years ago also saw Artur Boruc save a penalty from Louis Saha in stoppage time on a dramatic night, as per BBC.

These Celtic fans on Twitter looked back with fondness on Nakamura’s history-making free kick:

Nottingham Forest react as Matty Cash scoops a Team of the Week place

Well, that’s one way to prove the doubters wrong.

In his recent column for Nottinghamshire Live, former Nottingham Forest man Kenny Burns stated how he wasn’t 100% sure if Matty Cash was the best solution for Nottingham Forest at right-back.

Hopefully he’s not a big presence on social media, otherwise, he’d be feeling rather sheepish right about now, as Cash was once again named in the WhoScored.com Team of the Week.

As Nottingham Forest themselves pointed out this isn’t the first time that Cash has received this kind of award.

Reacting, there were some Forest fans who took the moment for what it was, Cash being given yet more recognition for his efforts, but there were a couple who turned it into a chance to call out Burns for his views on the right-back.

Fair to say they didn’t pull any punches when it came to the former Red.

You wonder how many more times it’s going to take for Burns to realise that he might not be 100% correct on this one.

Lanzini out, Wilshere & Cresswell in: West Ham XI that should face Sheffield United

West Ham face a tough challenge as Sheffield United visit on Saturday, but if Manuel Pellegrini the necessary changes to his team then they could return to winning ways.

The Blades have adjusted well to the Premier League and their 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Monday put them above the Hammers in the table.

Chris Wilder has organised his team very effectively and made them difficult to break down, as evidenced by their four clean sheets from nine games – the joint-most of any team in the league.

That could be a problem for the East London outfit, who have found the target just 11 times in nine games, and despite four goals in eight league games Haller’s lack of movement has been singled out by Pellegrini as a problem.

Some fans feel that is harsh, blaming a lack of service and support for the German as the real reason behind their poor attack.

In particular, Lanzini has underwhelmed this term, with zero goals and just two assists, and therefore he should make way against the Blades, as he could be crowded out by the combination of their three centre-backs and the deep-lying centre-midfielders, such as Oli Norwood.

To counter that, here is how West Ham should line-up.

The inclusion of Jack Wilshere could surprise a few and please others in equal measure, as although he is yet to prove himself in West Ham colours on a regular basis, he could help breathe fresh life into the team.

Lanzini has disappointed some fans with his recent displays. Not only does he have just the one assist in the league, but he has failed to make a pass into the box in each of his last five league appearances, so it is little surprise that Pellegrini’s side haven’t been scoring.

By contrast, the England international should retain possession more efficiently, as well as providing that crucial support Haller relies upon, with an average of 4.2 passes to the final third from the four matches he has started this campaign.

The other decision which Pellegrini has to make is whether Aaron Cresswell comes back into the starting line-up, but if he is deemed fit enough to play – which he should be after training all week – then he should replace Arthur Masuaku.

The Congo international managed just a 5/10-rated performance against Everton as per Football London, with the opening goal coming down his side. By contrast, the former Ipswich man has scored two goals in four league games so far, though his manager will likely want more from him in regards to crosses and key passes, as he is yet to record any of either.

Henry Winter claims Arsenal captain Xhaka may look to leave the club

Chief Football Writer at The Times Henry Winter believes Granit Xhaka may look to leave Arsenal, in part to save his international career. The Arsenal captain, who is valued at £36m on Transfermarkt, hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons last week after reacting badly to his own fans booing him as he walked off the pitch. Xhaka appeared to swear at the Emirates crowd, then proceeded to goad them further before ripping off his shirt and trudging down the tunnel.Xhaka has since penned an apology (of sorts) to Arsenal’s supporters for his behaviour. He claimed to have reached ‘boiling point’ after repeatedly being abused at matches and on social media, with some of the language used towards him being genuinely appalling.Speaking about the situation, Winter believes that Xhaka may well now look to leave the club once the transfer window opens in the new year, not only because of the current tensions but also due to the fact he wants to be a regular for the Switzerland national team – which he has represented on 78 occasions already.Check out what Winter said in full about the Gunners skipper below…

Juventus would be making mistake offering Paulo Dybala for Man Utd’s Paul Pogba

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Paulo Dybala’s Juventus career is currently at a real crossroads.

Just a couple of months ago, the young Argentine forward was looking really close to actually leaving Turin and heading towards the Premier League and now, he’s in line to become their future leader.

So far this season, the 26-year-old star has managed to score five goals and assist further three in a total of 14 games played for the Bianconeri, and is finally gaining some momentum.

But recently, there were talks once again about his potential departure.

Tuttosport (via AS) were even mentioning a potential swap deal in the Old Lady’s attempt to recapture the signature of Paul Pogba, the Manchester United star.

Dybala’s name was mentioned as one of the players who are likely to enter that reported deal.

But looking at their situation as a whole, it doesn’t really make much sense for Maurizio Sarri to part with his gem, even if it meant the return of Pogba back to Turin.

The Argentine is clearly beloved by the fans and his recent emergence could be a sign of great things to come. Of course, we don’t know what kind of a player will Dybala turn into in the future but the early signs are promising.

And this is even more reinforced by Cristiano Ronaldo’s slow decline.

The Portuguese star was subbed off in his last two performances for the Italian giants and interestingly enough and even poetically, it was Dybala who replaced Ronaldo against Milan with the Argentine going on to score the only goal of the game, clinching all three points in the process.

That moment might have signalled the changing of the guard and the Portuguese actually handing over the torch to the Argentine.

Pogba’s arrival could very much boost Juventus, even take them to another level, but not if it meant the departure of Dybala.

Sarri would indeed be shooting himself in the foot if he allowed that to happen.

They were lucky to keep him in the summer and they shouldn’t be making the same mistake of putting him on the market again.

Tottenham fans react to Bruno Fernandes transfer update as January move eyed

Lots of Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react after A Bola reported that the north Londoners are continuing to keep an eye on Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes was a transfer target for Spurs back in the summer, and the Portuguese giants rejected a huge £58m offer from Tottenham for the 25-year-old’s services due to the “difficult” structure of the deal.

The 16-cap Portugal international has already scored seven goals and recorded five assists in all competitions for Sporting this season, having previously amassed a stunning haul of 32 goals and 18 assists in the 2018/19 campaign.

A Bola now reports that the midfielder is still on Spurs’ radar, news that has sparked a lot of response from the Tottenham fans on Twitter.

One fan said that the goal scoring midfielder could have made a difference at the start of this season, while another said that he should be signed to replace Christian Eriksen – his contract expires in the summer – instead of Paulo Dybala, another reported summer target.

Let’s take a look at some of the Twitter reaction…

Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard should take note of fan banner

As weird and as unusual as it may seem, Real Madrid are currently bottom of their group in the Champions League after two games played in the competition.

This comes courtesy of the 3-0 thrashing from PSG  and the 2-2 draw with Club Brugge at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

And that second one was pretty close too. Los Blancos were actually two goals down at the halfway mark but goals from Sergio Ramos and Casemiro ensured a point was salvaged.

Alphonse Areola also had a good game coming off the bench and replacing Real Madrid’s number one, Thibaut Courtois, who supposedly couldn’t finish the match.

But one player, in particular, who didn’t really impress in that game and was largely expected to was Eden Hazard, the Galacticos’ big-money summer signing whose emergence everyone is still waiting for.

The Belgian was decent but couldn’t really make a difference on the night, tallying three shots, one of which was on target, one key pass and 88.7% passing accuracy.

There was, however, an image from the clash with Brugge that the 29-year-old should definitely take note of and use as motivation for the future.

Some Real fans brought a huge number seven banner to the match, either as a shout out to Hazard himself, who is wearing that number at the moment, or just as a reminder of the legend who used to carry it on his back for many years in the Spanish capital.

Of course, we’re talking about Cristiano Ronaldo, who made a switch to Juventus but is seemingly not yet forgotten among the Madridistas.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

Hazard should definitely take a good look at that banner and ask himself whether he’s actually performing at the level his reputation and that number on his back are demanding.

Ronaldo’s importance to the team was huge, to say the least, and now that the Belgian is the owner of the “number seven”, that responsibility might fall onto his shoulders.

Every player needs an adaptation period when he arrives at his new club but Hazard will have to start performing soon because Real need a leader in attack and that number suggests he is the one to do it.

Only time will tell how successful he’ll be.

Charlton fans react to Conor Gallagher’s international call-up

Charlton Athletic have started the 2019/20 Championship campaign in impressive form to rise to 10th in the table following their promotion-winning season from League One, and some of the club’s fanbase have been reacting to an international call-up for one of their star performers.

Conor Gallagher, 19, has been promoted to the England U21 squad ahead of games against Slovenia and Austria over the October international break.

The Addicks have acquired some decent Premier League talent on loan in recent years, including the likes of Josh Cullen, Ben Purrington and Krystian Bielik, and it appears Gallagher is simply the latest in a number of loanee success stories at the Valley.

The striker has scored four goals and registered one assist in 11 Championship appearances for Charlton this season.

Some fans have been responding to the news that their latest academy prospect is set to feature for Aidy Boothroyd’s side over the next fortnight.

Arsenal fans delighted with Bukayo Saka’s performance against Eintracht Frankfurt

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal got their Europa League campaign off to a fantastic start against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

With the Eagles coming off the back of an impressive campaign, which saw them reach the semi-finals of this very competition, it had the potential to be a very difficult encounter for a Gunners side currently low on confidence after three games without a win.

However, it ended up being a comfortable night for Unai Emery’s men, as they ran out 3-0 winners at the Commerzbank Arena.

A number of fringe players were given the chance to prove themselves, and they performed well for the most part. In particular, Bukayo Saka was impressive, scoring once and providing the assists for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s and Joe Willock’s strikes.
