Aston Villa should have signed Eberechi Eze in the summer

Aston Villa may have missed a trick by failing to land reported summer transfer target, Eberechi Eze.

What was the story?

Reports from The Guardian back in late July suggested that Dean Smith’s side were interested in signing the attacker from Championship side QPR, but that the club would face significant competition for his signature from fellow Premier League teams.

In the end, Eze completed a switch to Crystal Palace for a fee in the region of £20m, with Villa signing their own wide player in Lyon’s Bertrand Traore. Whilst the former has yet to score for his new team, there’s a real case to be made that Smith should have landed the man from Loftus Road.

Shades of Sterling

With 14 goals and eight assists in just 46 Championship games last season, Eze was a shining light for a QPR team that didn’t even make the play-offs.

The England U21 international possesses a lot of the best characteristics a winger should have, with Sky Sports’ Lewis Jones claiming that he “is a devastating ball-carrier, possessing a glide with the ball that only a unique talent can boast.”

And that dribbling is what QPR’s former manager, Marc Bircham, has previously raved about, saying: “He goes past players easier than Raheem Sterling did. Sterling would beat players with pace or do a trick or a chop – it’s all dynamic movements, but Ebere Eze just glides past players.”

With Traore, Villa have someone who previously played in the Premier League with Chelsea and didn’t make the grade. In Eze, they would have signed a rising talent with real experience of English football, and the potential to develop into a fearsome star at Villa Park.

Predicted Leeds XI vs Charlton for the Championship finale

Leeds United embark on their final Championship outing of not just the season, but also for the foreseeable future after clinching the title last week.

And even though, the Yorkshire giants have nothing to play for, they do welcome a side whose fate will be decided at Elland Road tonight.

Charlton Athletic occupy that final relegation spot and need a victory to hold a chance of remaining in the English second-flight. It’s a rather exciting finale at the bottom end of the table as three of six will be gone come 10pm this evening.

Marcelo Bielsa surprisingly tinkered with his starting XI last time out, but will he do the same here? or will the Argentine go full-strength out of respect for those teams fighting for their lives?

Here’s what we are predicting…

We’re expecting there to be as many as six changes as Bielsa, a man of integrity, finishes the season in strong style.

One controversial decision from the weekend was the reintroduction of Kiko Casilla between the sticks but Illan Meslier who has been ever-impressive in the Spaniard’s absence should take the reigns once more.

Whilst in front of him, it could be loan star Ben White’s last ever appearance for the club as he heads back to parent club Brighton this summer.

He’s likely to partner skipper Liam Cooper, who was dropped for the Rams fixture, with Gaetano Berardi out with a serious ACL injury.

Barry Douglas could remain at left-back with Luke Ayling returning in the place of Stuart Dallas, who earns a much-needed rest.

20-year-old centre-back Pascal Struijk has looked impressive in the Kalvin Phillips role, so it would be a shock to see him dropped here whilst fellow youngster Jamie Shackleton should also keep his place after a goal against Derby on Sunday.

Mateusz Klich missed his first game of the season but will surely return here, replacing Pablo Hernandez in midfield.

Another player who took his opportunity at the weekend was Ian Poveda and with Helder Costa out injured, he’s in line for a start whilst £10m man Jack Harrison could partner him on the other wing.

Patrick Bamford may also replace Tyler Roberts upfront.

Aston Villa: Fans respond after Jack Grealish’s £200k gesture

Many Aston Villa fans have heaped heavy praise on club captain Jack Grealish after news emerged of a £200k gesture he has made to the NHS.

The young attacking midfielder was in the press for all the wrong reasons as the United Kingdom went into lockdown due to the recent pandemic in March, flouting advice by attending a house party.

The 24-year-old has since apologised via a video link, but a recent raffling of a match worn Villa shirt has now gained him some plaudits, seeing him donate the money to the NHS.

The shirt gained £55,000 as fans of the club and the midfielder bidded for the item, whilst Grealish also handed his two-week fine of £150,000 for his lockdown rule break, straight to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Grealish’s future at Villa is not yet known after being linked with a move to both Manchester United and Everton.

Whilst the midfielder could leave the Midlands based club this summer, Villa’s own future is not yet known, sitting 19th in the Premier League as things stand.

Reacting to the former England U21 international’s gesture via @PreeceObserver, fans handed Grealish a response…

Wolverhampton Wanderers: Fans rave over Tim Spiers post about Europa League

Plenty of Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have raved over a post from Tim Spiers as the journalist relayed information from The Telegraph writer James Ducker about the Europa League on his official Twitter page.

Ducker writes that the UEFA Europa League final in Gdansk, Poland has been provisionally earmarked for August 26th, with the Champions League final scheduled for three days later.

The Wanderers’ last game in the competition was the 1-1 draw against Olympiacos away in Greece over a month ago, with Pedro Neto scoring what could turn out to be a crucial equaliser against the ten men, who opened the scoring through Youssef El Arabi, as per Sky Sports.

The second leg is yet to be played but WWFC supporters may be silently confident with an away goal that they can finish the job at Molineux and progress through to the next round.

These fans were raving over the news, as many, jokingly or not, were already talking about seeing Wolves in the final:

Everton: Fans relive the rollercoaster of emotions during 1994 relegation scare

Everton fans are reliving the emotions felt during the final game of the 1993/94 season, where they narrowly avoided relegation thanks to a superb comeback against Wimbledon.

Just three minutes into their final game of the Premier League campaign, Everton looked like they would be crashing out of the top flight after the opposition nudged themselves ahead through a penalty.

The match went from bad to worse after Wimbledon extended their lead through a Gary Ablett own goal and fans prepared themselves to face the dreaded drop into the Championship. But the class of 1993/94 had other ideas. After pulling one back through a Graham Stuart penalty, the Blues kicked into their highest gear and found two more goals through Barry Horne and another Stuart strike.

The historic comeback kept Everton in the Premier League and fans still remember the spectrum of emotions they went through during that day. One supporter has scolded the club, saying ‘don’t ever do that to me again’. Here’s a look at some of the other replies:

Do you remember this historic comeback, Blues? Let us know your memories from the game in the comments below!

Luke Edwards makes worrying claim on Newcastle takeover

Newcastle United’s takeover may have hit a problem, according to the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards. The Magpies reporter has regularly provided supporters with updates throughout this whole process and this week he issued his thoughts about the situation on talkSPORT and it makes for worrying news.A clip from his interviews was posted to Twitter, which can be viewed below, but the journalist went on to say that he believes there ‘obviously is a problem’ in regards to the Premier League’s owners and directors test.

Edwards also claims there has been an air of anxiety in the Magpies fanbase as a result of differing reports coming from different camps, he said: “the longer it goes on, you naturally start to worry that they’ll find a way to block it and I think that’s where we are at the moment.”

Cameo Clubs: Which obscure teams did these football legends play for?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

It’s hardly an encouraging piece of information from someone in the loop.

The £300m takeover by a Saudi Arabian-backed consortium appears to be rumbling on into yet another week, meaning it is quickly approaching two months since news first broke that Mike Ashley was finally prepared to sell the Magpies.

Tottenham Hotspur: Pundit tips Harry Kane to leave Spurs and chase his dreams

Former Premier League striker Noel Whelan claims Harry Kane could leave Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of bigger and better things after their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were ended.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the pundit insists Kane has a “massive decision” to make about his long-term future.

Spurs are firmly in the mix for a Europa League place after they beat Newcastle 3-1 to mark Jose Mourinho’s first win at St James’ Park, while both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield United also in contention with only two games remaining.

Mourinho’s men can no longer qualify for Champions League football next season, sitting seven points behind fourth with just two games left. They could still qualify for the Europa League, but may have to win both of their remaining games to fend off challenges from Sheffield United, Wolves and Arsenal (BBC Sport).

Whelan believes Kane will have to reconsider his future in north London if he wants to win the Premier League and the Champions League.

Whelan told assistant editor Russell Edge “he’s got a massive decision to make has Harry Kane because they’re not going to get in the Champions League positions.

“Right now they’re going to be struggling to get into European football and that could be a massive decision on Harry Kane – can he afford to waste another season at a club that’s not going to be playing in the Champions League?

“Most of the top players in the world are in that competition and he’s a top player. That is something we need to look at very closely and something he needs to make a decision on. Trying to hold onto a player, for Spurs that is going to be very difficult when you’re not in the Champions League.”

It is hard to argue with Whelan here, as Kane has made it clear he wants to win trophies sooner rather than later.

Club legend Teddy Sheringham has tipped his countryman to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium within the next two years.

Sheringham actually found himself in a similar position to the striker towards the end of the last century, before he famously moved to Manchester United, picking up three Premier League titles, the Champions League and FA Cup as a result.

Kane has attracted attention from a number of European clubs for his performances over the years, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils, and he has recently repeated he wants to win silverware, while The Telegraph reported he will weigh up his options in the summer.

The 26-year-old is the club’s top scorer this season, although it seems his efforts are seemingly in vain.

Kane has still not won a single trophy with the club he joined as a youngster, despite the fact Mauricio Pochettino’s men came close to Champions League glory last year. To make matters even worse, Mourinho’s side are set to finish another season without a trophy.

While Daniel Levy has moved to ward off any potential suitors by slapping a £200m price tag on the academy product, it is difficult to believe he will be able to resist the temptations of joining a club like Barcelona or Real Madrid in the future, if this barren run continues.

Tottenham fans, do you think Harry Kane will leave Spurs soon? Let us know down below!

Man United may have their modern-day version of the ‘Class of 92’

[long_read]

The ‘Class of 92’ has become an iconic celebration of a group of Manchester United academy prospects who all made it to the big-time together. Coming through the youth sides and eventually stepping out onto the hallowed turf of Old Trafford as bona-fide first-team stars. A tale worthy of being made into a movie…

But where once they heralded an era of unprecedented dominance in the Premier League, the Red Devils now find themselves in the midst of one of their darkest periods in recent memory. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have endured a nightmare six years since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, and things have never looked so bleak on the pitch.

Just how could they do with a touch of inspiration? Well, they appear to have a rare silver lining in the shape of a new crop of prospects. Solskjaer has talked up the emphasis on giving young players a chance, and given the quality and quantity of those coming through the club’s academy system, it is easy to see why.

Whether they can match up to the achievements of the ‘Class of 92’ remains to be seen, but there are some striking similarities in terms of the position, profile and personality of those from yesteryear and now.

[snack_break title=”Mason Greenwood-David Beckham”]

The two most talked about names of their respective classes, Greenwood and Beckham are the undoubted standouts when it comes to the public eye. While the latter may not have been the ‘best’ player in the ‘Class of 92’ – that award generally seems to go to either Paul Scholes or Ryan Giggs – he certainly became the most high-profile individual of any United academy graduate.

Similarly, Greenwood is the name on every Red Devils fans’ lips at the moment – the recently turned 18-year-old burst on to the scene during the club’s pre-season tour earlier in the summer, and his two Europa League goals in limited game-time this season have already earned him a new long-term contract.

[snack_break title=”James Garner-Paul Scholes”]

If there is one player United desperately need to succeed out of their new crop of youngsters, it may well be Garner. The 18-year-old is talked about highly by those within the club and outside, and his style of play has already earned rave reviews.

The central midfielder boasts calmness and composure in equal measure, and in a first-team squad that quite truthfully lacks anyone who can sit back and dictate the tempo of the game, Garner is surely destined to be fast-tracked into the first-team. Scholes was the heartbeat of the United side for an entire generation – the Red Devils will hope their new teenage sensation can do the same now.

[snack_break title=”Tahith Chong-Ryan Giggs”]

United have always been blessed with world-class wingers during the Premier League era, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Giggs no doubt the two best. One man who has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of the latter, is Chong. Former academy coach Clayton Blackmore – who reportedly encouraged the club to sign the Dutchman from Feyernoord – was quite unequivocal in his praise of the 19-year-old.

He remarked: “The closest player I’ve seen to filling Ryan Giggs’ boots was Angel Di Maria but Mr Van Gaal did not play him in the right position. He (Chong) could be the next one. He’s playing on the wing, looking really good running with the ball as well like Ryan. He’s done well since coming back from injury. He can go the distance.” Quite the comparison.

[snack_break title=”Brandon Williams-Gary Neville”]

A club stalwart, Neville racked up 597 appearances for United as he defined himself as a reliable, one-club man. A solid defensive full-back, the former England international was an ever-present in the Red Devils’ first-team under Sir Alex Ferguson. Whilst Williams is a left-back by trade, by being naturally right-footed, he could switch over to the opposite flank and be the long-term heir to Neville’s throne.

Even if that positional change doesn’t happen, Williams will back himself to assert himself in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side sooner rather than later, particularly if his only genuine competition is a 34-year-old Ashley Young and an injury-prone Luke Shaw.

[snack_break title=”Axel Tuanzebe-Phil Neville”]

The ultimate utility man, Neville made a career out of putting the team’s needs first, and playing wherever the manager wanted him – something he admitted sometimes worked against him. And whilst Tuanzebe may similarly take offence at simply being known as someone who fills gaps, he could enjoy a remarkably long career by proving his versatility to the side.

He showed his commitment to the cause earlier this season, when in the space of a week, he played at left-back against Arsenal, and then at both centre-back and right-back in the same game against Newcastle. Injuries and tactical switches are bound to happen over the course of a season, and so the 21-year-old can enhance his reputation at Old Trafford by becoming the man his manager relies upon to step up when needed.

[snack_break title=”Angel Gomes-Nicky Butt”]

Perhaps the least heralded member of the ‘Class of 92’, Butt still went on to play 383 times for the club – a feat that arguably goes unremembered because he played second-fiddle to midfielders like Scholes and Roy Keane. The former England international was a reliable lieutenant for Ferguson, playing in crunch clashes and never letting the side down.

Gomes, is similarly diminutive in terms of stature (he stands at just 5 foot 3), but has shown glimpses he can be a figure Solskjaer can turn to. Gomes and Butt are distinctly different in terms of their positions and their play-styles, and compared to the other members on this list, perhaps not quite as talented. But as Butt proved in his spell at the club, hard work can beat talent.

And that’s exactly what Gomes should take inspiration from.

Juventus would be making mistake offering Paulo Dybala for Man Utd’s Paul Pogba

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Paulo Dybala’s Juventus career is currently at a real crossroads.

Just a couple of months ago, the young Argentine forward was looking really close to actually leaving Turin and heading towards the Premier League and now, he’s in line to become their future leader.

So far this season, the 26-year-old star has managed to score five goals and assist further three in a total of 14 games played for the Bianconeri, and is finally gaining some momentum.

But recently, there were talks once again about his potential departure.

Tuttosport (via AS) were even mentioning a potential swap deal in the Old Lady’s attempt to recapture the signature of Paul Pogba, the Manchester United star.

Dybala’s name was mentioned as one of the players who are likely to enter that reported deal.

But looking at their situation as a whole, it doesn’t really make much sense for Maurizio Sarri to part with his gem, even if it meant the return of Pogba back to Turin.

The Argentine is clearly beloved by the fans and his recent emergence could be a sign of great things to come. Of course, we don’t know what kind of a player will Dybala turn into in the future but the early signs are promising.

And this is even more reinforced by Cristiano Ronaldo’s slow decline.

The Portuguese star was subbed off in his last two performances for the Italian giants and interestingly enough and even poetically, it was Dybala who replaced Ronaldo against Milan with the Argentine going on to score the only goal of the game, clinching all three points in the process.

That moment might have signalled the changing of the guard and the Portuguese actually handing over the torch to the Argentine.

Pogba’s arrival could very much boost Juventus, even take them to another level, but not if it meant the departure of Dybala.

Sarri would indeed be shooting himself in the foot if he allowed that to happen.

They were lucky to keep him in the summer and they shouldn’t be making the same mistake of putting him on the market again.

Man City would get another top prospect at the club by landing Kai Havertz

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Pep Guardiola is no stranger to pulling through and developing young prospects.

Even stemming from his early days at Barcelona, the Catalan coach introduced La Masia players and kept them in his squad, and it was during his time that some of their greatest talents like Xavi, Iniesta, and even Lionel Messi, rose to prominence.

But one of his most recent and also one of the most successful projects was definitely the one of Raheem Sterling.

The 24-year-old winger was always a big talent but under Guardiola he has turned into a world-beater, going through a full transformation.

This is best seen in his ability in front of goal, which has greatly improved since his early days when he was heavily criticised for that exact same thing.

His coach addressed the issue himself, stating:

“The first season, he was scared [in front of goal], he was looking [and thinking], ‘Who is the guy I am going to pass the ball to?’. “He was not looking [to score even though] the keeper was there. We spoke about that and said, ‘Try to score goals’.”

But now, he’s banging in goals for fun, already tallying 14 in a total of 19 games played across all competitions up until this weekend in 2019/20 and 25 in 2018/19.

Needless to say, Guardiola’s magic worked wonders for him.

For that reason, Manchester City’s links to Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz don’t really come as a surprise, nor should they, as Sport Bild (via Metro) report Guardiola has taken an interest in the youngster but he’s not nearly the only one.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder is one of the brightest young talents around and was once likened to Michael Ballack, who had a similar style of play back in the day.

Havertz has already registered 31 goals and 23 assists for his current team in the Bundesliga despite still being so young and practically at the very beginning of his career.

The knack for goals is already present in his profile but he’s far from being that developed goal-machine that he could become one day – but only if his talent is properly developed.

And who could be the one to take him to the next level? Why, Guardiola, of course.

Still, Sport Bild (via Metro) state that Bayer Leverkusen might ask for around £111m for the kid.

Are City prepared to fork out that much? It remains to be seen.

But one thing is for sure, under Guardiola, only sky would be the limit.
